The Collection includes transcripts, photographs and audiotapes from the two phases of the project, which documented African American life in the Greater Portland and Lewiston-Auburn areas.

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

The article focuses on the painting Interior, Portrait of John Sheepshanks which was painted by 19th-century British artist William Mulready and commissioned by the sitter, a patron of contemporary British art. The article discusses the relationship of the men, the representation of Sheepshanks's wealth in the portrait and the significance of the maid in the painting. The article goes on to discuss portraits of unidentified domestic servants and Sheepshanks's generosity towards his staff

In early modern Europe (1500-1800), festivals enlivened civic spaces with a frequency, scale, and magnificence unrecognizable to us today. Festivals marked ritual moments, praised political agendas, and provided public entertainment. Europe’s papal court, sovereign powers, civic governments, and high aristocracy sponsored festivals for all sorts of occasions, staging joyous entry processions when foreign dignitaries entered a city, celebrating coronations, marriages, royal births, and funerals, and honoring saint’s days and Carnival season. Festivals shaped the public spaces of European cities. Buildings, plazas, stairways, and roadways were constructed specifically with festivals in mind. Building on Paul Ricoeur’s work on memory and forgetting, this article analyzes exile and identity in Linda Lê’s Calomnies, a novel that narrates the peregrinations of a young girl exiled from her native Vietnam because of French war but nevertheless living in France. Building on the contention that identity is somewhat problematic in exile, I argue that while the narrator’s resort to her relatives in order to remember her past, her struggle to battle oblivion often takes shape against the backdrop of collective memory. In Je ne parle pas la langue de mon père (2003), L’arabe comme un chant secret (2010a), as well as in other components of her intimate prose, Leïla Sebbar reflects on her sense of dispossessed identity due to linguistic exile and an unknown heritage, resulting from ruptures in her paternal filiation. Drawing from the works of Jacques Derrida, Régine Robin and Simon Harel, which form the basis of our argumentation, we examine various dimensions of the severed parental bond. André Schwarz-Bart’s novels have elicited occasional mentions of magical realism as a literary “style” by critics, while Simone Schwarz-Bart’s fiction has been approached in relation to the “poetics” of the “marvelous real” developed as for 1949 by Alejo Carpentier. This essay argues that in André’s The Last of the Justs and The Morning Star, as well as in Simone’s The Bridge of Beyond, both authors practice almost constantly a form of poeticizing of the narrative that fuses reality and mystery in a narrative mode I have defined under the label marvelous realism; but they both also have occasional recourse to …

Better Pleasing The Court: How The American Collegiate Moot Court Association Can Improve Its Competition, Alan R. Gray Jr.

National Forensic Journal

The American Collegiate Moot Court Association strives to educate undergraduates about the American legal system through participation in moot court, a simulated oral argument before an appellate court. Its competition structure, however, suffers from defects that undermine the educational value of the event. This article argues that the ACMCA ought to adopt certain reforms in its operational structure, including geographically locking its regional competitions, abandoning its practice of power-matching preliminary rounds, and rewriting its judging ballot. These goals would not only enhance the quality of the legal education received by its participants, but improve students’ forensic learning experience as well.

Here, Dr. Daniels‐Sykes explores the principle of religious liberty, which has become one of the focal points in the current health care debate. She considers how one should ‘live’ religious liberty from the perspective those parishioners who live on the margins – those whose parishes have been closed, and the victims of individual and institutional racism.
