A Study Of A Thirteenth-Century Vernacular Moralized Bible: Vienna 2554 And Its Royal Audience, Jessica Wright Jul 2012

A Study Of A Thirteenth-Century Vernacular Moralized Bible: Vienna 2554 And Its Royal Audience, Jessica Wright

Theses and Dissertations

Codex Vindobonensis 2554, Vienna, Österreichische Nationalbibliothek (hereafter labeled Vienna 2554) is the only thirteenth-century moralized bible written in vernacular French and was intended for a royal audience. This bible provides a moralizing gloss on contemporary political and religious issues by juxtaposing scenes from the Old and New Testaments. Placing the manuscript in the historical context of Blanche of Castile's regency and her desire to instill devout faith in her young son, Louis IX of France, the manuscript serves as a mirror that reflects contemporary relations between church and state. Moreover, the illuminated depictions of kingship of this medieval bible are …

Seniors And Social Networking: A Class To Connect Family And Friends, Catherine A. Chatelain Jul 2012

Seniors And Social Networking: A Class To Connect Family And Friends, Catherine A. Chatelain

Theses and Dissertations

One of the most important life stages that senior citizens experience is the need to share the legacy of their lives with others. While many senior citizens are able to share these with family members, many others do not have the opportunity or the people to share this important time in their lives with. This project was designed with both of these groups in mind in an attempt to connect seniors with others through the social networking site, Facebook. The element of writing was also adopted into the project as a means to get seniors to reflect on their lives …

Cope, Cooperate, Combat: Civilian Responses To Union Occupation In Saline County, Missouri, During The Civil War, Elle Harvell Jul 2012

Cope, Cooperate, Combat: Civilian Responses To Union Occupation In Saline County, Missouri, During The Civil War, Elle Harvell

History Theses

The Union occupation of Saline County, Missouri, during the Civil War brought many challenges to the civilian population. Civilians responded to the federal presence in a variety of ways: a few citizens coped with the situation, most cooperated in the face of an immediate threat, and others combated the federal incursion ruthlessly. A violent cycle of resistance and retaliation erupted between the pro-Confederate civilians and guerillas and the federals. Federal attempts to punish the Confederate enemy and to stabilize society encouraged more resistance. Faced with increasing defiance, the Union hardened policies. The presence of two rival forces in the county …

Family Affairs Newsletter 2012-07-15, Zack Paakkonen

Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

What (If Anything) Do We Owe Wild Animals?, Clare A. Palmer Jul 2012

What (If Anything) Do We Owe Wild Animals?, Clare A. Palmer

Between the Species

It’s widely agreed that animal pain matters morally – that we shouldn’t, for instance, starve our animal companions, and that we should provide medical care to sick or injured agricultural animals, and not only because it benefits us to do so. But do we have the same moral responsibilities towards wild animals? Should we feed them if they are starving, and intervene to prevent them from undergoing other forms of suffering, for instance from predation? Using an example that includes both wild and domesticated animals, I outline two contrasting ways of thinking about our moral responsibilities with respect to assisting …
