Genes and cellular lines are two of the most patented objects in the natural world. Genes, the building blocks of the human body, contain approximately 30,000 different sequences of genetic code, twenty percent of which is patented (Gene Patenting). Multi-billion companies like Microbiological Associates hold hundreds of cellular patents derived from human bodies (Skloot 101). Scientists, drug and research companies, and even genetic and cellular donors all want sole ownership over genes and cell lines that make them money, and will viciously fight in court when they believe their rights have been infringed. This essay reviews Nietzsche’s discussion of scholarly judgments of style beginning with his own inaugural lecture at Basel together with David Hume’s stylistic reflections in Hume's “On the Standard of Taste.” This casts light both on the context and the substance of Nietzsche’s own scholarly concern with the question of style and taste in terms of what Nietzsche called the “science of aesthetics” and consequently of scholarly judgment in both classics (or classical philology, here including archaeology and historiography) and philosophy. I also include a brief discussion of Nietzsche’s phenomenological performance practice of dance or playing the “satyr.”

Passive Dispositions: On The Relationship Between Πάθος And ῎Ἕξις In Aristotle, Marjolein Oele

Philosophy

In many studies of Aristotle it is taken for granted that there is a relationship between the affections (pathē) and the dispositions (hexeis) with which they are associated, but how the process of passively reacting to particular circumstances (i.e. the event of a mere pathos) can turn into and generate a particular moral disposition to be affected is not explained. This paper seeks to offer a systematic exploration of the constitutive relationship between pathos and passive moral dispositions.

A Sketch Of The Affective Classroom: Abject Art, Patrick Kinsman

Abject art is highly affective, meaning that it generates strong sensations and feelings in viewers. In a classroom, high affect art demands that these reactions be integrated into the relationships between instructor, students and artwork. The affective classroom is then a classroom which summons high affects and walks a careful line between non-dialogic "shock" and a group therapy session, in order to understand affective relationships as proper material for learning. Affect is interactive and communicative by definition, but is unpredictable and uneven. Using my 2012 seminar in Abject Art, I outline the development and experience of teaching a semester of …
