A Daoist Model For A Kantian Church, Stephen R. Palmquist

Comparative Philosophy

Although significant differences undoubtedly exist between Daoism and Kant’s philosophy, the two systems also have some noteworthy similarities. After calling attention to a few such parallels and sketching the outlines of Kant’s philosophy of religion, this article focuses on an often-neglected feature of the latter: the four guiding principles of what Kant calls an “invisible church” (universality, purity, freedom, and unchangeableness). Numerous passages from Lao Zi’s classic text, Dao-De-Jing, seem to uphold these same principles, thus suggesting that they can also be interpreted as core features of a Daoist philosophy of life. It is commonly believed that impartial utilitarian moral theories have significant demands that we help the global poor, and that the partial virtue ethics of Mencius and Aristotle do not. This ethical partiality found in these virtue ethicists has been criticized, and some have suggested that the partialistic virtue ethics of Mencius and Aristotle are parochial (i.e., overly narrow in their scope of concern). I believe, however, that the ethics of Mencius and Aristotle are both more cosmopolitan than many presume and also are very demanding. This paper explores the graphic novel as a means to engage secondary English students in the works of Shakespeare. Graphic novels can combat some of the common complaints of teaching Shakespeare in secondary schools. They can help students to better relate to and understand the stories and language of Shakespeare. They can also assist learning disabled students in accessing and engaging in Shakespeare.

Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew demonstrates the possible equality of marriage within Elizabethan marriage standards. However, in order to understand the importance of this concept one must first understand the negotiations, and role expectations within marriage during this time period. In Taming of the Shrew, Shakespeare first introduces the audience to Petruchio who emulates the traditional man in an Elizabethan marriage. Then he establishes Katherine's character which does not fit into the expected role of subservient wife. Shakespeare compares their relationship to the traditional marriage because Shakespearean audiences would have been familiar with this social commentary. Katherine realizes that she …

Shakespeare's Othello contains crucial lessons that are important for secondary students to understand. Lessons learned by the play's main characters—both male and female—can serve as a guide to help students find relevance in Shakespeare's words and find solutions to their problems. This paper addresses five topics that are particularly meaningful to the young adult experience: social transitioning, trust establishment, jealousy avoidance, reputation preservation, and integrity maintenance. The Merchant of Venice is typically read as a racist text, and often censored as such from production in modern society or from study in modern high schools. This is due to the racism in the play. However, I submit that although racism is clearly present in the play, the play in itself never actually promotes any form of racism or condones prejudice. Beginning with the legalization of same-sex marriage in 2010 and following up with the passage of the gender identity law of 2012, Argentina has quickly catapulted itself to the forefront of LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans*, queer) rights in the world. This study sets out to answer a simple question: how did these vast legal changes come about in a country whose LGBTQ citizens are still met with hostility and discrimination? I examine the following elements in regards to women’s mobilization in Latin America and Venezuela from the late 1950s to the present: (a) the influence of the state and economy on times when women mobilized (b) class division within the movement (c) women’s demands during different time periods (d) the ways in which women were successful in working towards gender equality. This thesis reviews the literature on women’s mobilization in Latin America during the second half of the twentieth century. This study assesses the origins of Arizona’s state-sponsored immigration policy. It attempts to identify the social dynamics within Arizona that contributed to the overwhelming public support for SB 1070. Since it has been two years after the law was passed, this analysis determines what impact the law has had thus far within the state. Finally, it postulates the future of Arizona’s immigration policy.

This project studied the differences between mainstream news reporting in the U.S. and China. I employed content analysis to analyze the major features of 427 news reports about the economic interaction between the two countries. The research focused on the key media frames in the two sets of news media, the factors that shaped these media frames, and the real meanings behind those reports. The study found both similarities and differences. This thesis explores the influence of Edward Gibbon's History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire on modern scholarship about two ancient Roman historians, Ammianus Marcellinus and Procopius of Caesarea. It reveals that Gibbon's way of thinking about these historians, whom he referred to as his "guides," continues to shape scholarly discourse about them.

In order to help students find connections to the Core Knowledge curriculum and the principles of Discipline-Based Art Education, the author uses narrative and visual storytelling in the form of altered books to make meaning and relate the lives of students to the art content. The author uses methods of action research to plan a curriculum intervention, work with the students to create their visual stories, reflect on his instruction along with student learning, and collect students' responses through surveys. In the wake of religious conflicts around the world, interfaith dialogues are being introduced to facilitate intercultural and religious understanding and tolerance. Although the participation of young people in interfaith dialogue and its impact on education is crucial to its sustainability, the literature on youth and interfaith has been very limited. This article addresses this gap by probing the significance or impact of interfaith on the views of our youth respondents on other religions. Described as one of Britain’s most musical choreographers, Alston has used works by a diverse range of composers to explore how choreography can animate the spirit of music. Featured in this program will be the American premiere of Alston’s most recent work, A Ceremony of Carols, choreographed to Benjamin Britten’s masterpiece for voice and harp. The music will be performed live by an all-female choir conducted by Montclair State’s Heather J. Buchanan, accompanied by harpist André Tarantiles. Also included will be Alston’s Roughcut and Unfinished Business, set to the music of Steve Reich and Mozart, respectively.
