The Danish Sisterhood in America is ca. 2 years younger than its big brother, The Danish Brotherhood, as the first lodge, namely “The Christine Lodge” No. 1 in Negaunee, Mich. was organized on the 15th of December, 1883 by Mrs. Christine Hemmingsen, whose husband was a member of the Brotherhood. Consequently, the Sisterhood has now existed for 24 years.

This paper presents a project developed at the Russian Flagship Center at Portland State University, the pilot Russian Learner Corpus of Academic Writing (piRULEC). PiRULEC is the first of its kind Russian learner corpus that contains academic texts written on a variety of topics produced by advanced learners of Russian from a variety of linguistic backgrounds (heritage speakers of Russian and mainstream American students).

Статья написана по итогам работы в рамках программы «Flagship» в 2011 / 2012 учебном году. Использование драматургических текстов в процессе обучения студентов на высших уровнях владения русским языком (C1 и C2) продуктивно по нескольким причинам. Во-первых, материал пьес позволяет продемонстрировать интонационное богатство русского языка. Большое внимание на практических занятиях уделяется ремаркам, сопровождающим текст персонажей. Они дают студентам комплексное представление о различных тактиках и типах речевого поведения, соответствующих им языковых средствах и наиболее частотных ситуациях общения. Прагматика общения, как известно, в значительной мере опреде-ляется спецификой жанра: существуют жанровые каноны, допуска-ющие ту или иную степень вариативности, но выход за рамки таких канонов приводит к коммуникативным неудачам. Попадая в стан-дартные условия общения, люди вырабатывают оптимальные для этих условий способы общения. Новые же коммуниканты, осваивая жанровый канон, стараются ему следовать, и в этом смысле оказы-ваются полностью зависимыми от жанра. Каким же образом можно обучить иностранца русским речевым жанрам? Какие именно речевые жанры стоит рассматривать как объект и предмет обучения на уроках РКИ?

Most published work in our field privileges theory over analysis, with analysis acting as a subordinate testing ground and exemplification for a theory. Reversing that customary polarity, this article analyzes three works by Stravinsky (Petrushka, The Rake’s Progress, Requiem Canticles) with a relative minimum of theoretical preconceptions and with the simple aim, in David Lewin’s words, of “hearing the piece[s] better.”

The visual consistency of branding makes a significant difference when successfully introduced to another culture. My study focuses on how to facilitate a smooth visual transition in western branding from Latin letters to Chinese characters. To move beyond traditional Chinese type design, Visual Translation introduces a new method for designing Chinese typefaces using existing Latin typefaces. This web-based educational tool seeks to help Chinese graphic design students and type enthusiasts, with emphasis on designers who are working in a cross-cultural environment to maintain visual consistency for branding.

Accordion Crimes, a novel by E. Annie Proulx, traces the life of and routes travelled by a green diatonic button accordion: its birth in Sicily in the workshop of “The Accordion Maker,” its numerous changes of ownership in the Americas during encounters between various immigrant communities, and its death when it finally falls into disrepair in the town of Old Glory, Minnesota. There are other accordions in the book, and many temporary human owners, but it is one particular green accordion that is the book’s protagonist. The two decades between World Wars I and II were a remarkably isolationist, xenophobic period in the history of American politics and culture. In the era’s literature, however, some US authors repurposed regional writing as a medium for rethinking conservative nationalism and for imagining their country’s place in the emerging global community. F. Scott Fitzgerald, whose career successes and failures mirrored the parabolic national pattern of Boom and Bust, was one such author. In 1975-1976, a group of science students of the Novosibirsk University (Russia, Siberia) created a small theatre that managed to avoid the official censorship for the entire season. In this memoir, several former actors, now scattered across the world, reconstruct the detailed history of their “Phenomenon” theatre 35 years later. The central event was the (first) staging (December 1975) of Andrey Voznesensky’s long poem “Avos'!”, long before the famous rock opera appeared.

In light of disciplinary conversations and increased attention to anti-racism in writing centers, we see a disciplinary mandate for writing centers to better articulate a pedagogy for racial justice that informs our everyday work, including but not limited to tutoring practice. This mandate, we believe, involves asking: How do we make actionable our commitment to racial justice when working with writers one-with-one? What interactional stances and pedagogical moves enact a pedagogy of anti-racism in writing centers? How do we prepare ourselves to enact this pedagogy? Whereas Eastern religions are typically defined by their practices, Western religions are identified by their theological histories, beginning with the covenant between God and Abraham. These theological histories chart a cultural progress marked by divine intrusions or revelations. In contrast, modern secular histories suggest that nature, humanity, and knowledge are progressing without the need for supernatural intervention. Moreover, while traditional religions typically claimed that ultimate truth had already been revealed, Enlightenment progressivism holds that truth is not yet absolutely known, that knowledge is still evolving, and that further progress in truth depends only on natural reason. If one were to ask a returned missionary from Finland, or even a member of the Church in Finland, when missionary work began in that country, a likely response would be that it began in 1946, when Elder Ezra Taft Benson dedicated the land for missionary work. The date is well known, and a small monument commemorating the event has been erected in Larsmo, a small town on Finland's northwestern shore.
