“Phone Home”: Remote Parenting Across National Borders – Jamaican Students In North America And The Role Of Mobile Communication Devices, Marian Stewart Titus

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

This study presents a snapshot of geographically distributed families and how they use information and communication technologies (ICTs). The setting is in the Caribbean nation of Jamaica, and by way of qualitative interviews with eleven parents, the study explores the extent to which Jamaican parents communicate with their adolescents overseas using ICTs. Despite the barriers of distance, the parents were able to maintain strong emotional bonds with their adolescents overseas, and used mobile phones and voice over Internet protocols to enact a virtual co-presence with their children, as well as to maintain existing, and create new family rituals. Today, nearly two and a half million people in the U.S. are living in cages, with New Orleans holding the highest per capita rate of incarceration. While we have consistently seen that building cages does not bring us any closer to actualizing safety, the sheriff and other city officials of New Orleans justify a financially profitable plan to create more cages-to warehouse more of the city's people-in the name of safety.

Using an abolitionist framework, this paper examines safety by differentiating between contributing factors of being secure and factors which create harm in our communities. By tracing these factors to …

香港短篇小說的精神疾病書寫 (1990-2010), Pui Ting Tsang

自古至今，疾病是文學反覆吟誦的母題。香港文學發展至今，以精神疾病作為敘事對象的作品不勝枚舉。九十年代以後的精神疾病書寫，更呈現一種眾聲喧嘩（Hetroglossia）的狀態。

疾病作為時代苦悶的象徵，是展示社會面貌及人文精神的重要表述符號， 因而在文學的主題表現上有舉足輕重的地位。精神疾病的敘事更以心靈為文本，逼視個人或社會的病態。審視兩岸三地文學發展的脈絡，在現代主義的熱潮薰陶，及社會動盪的政局與經濟發展下，精神疾病書寫的文學形式便應運而生。作家為精神疾病披上藝術的外衣，形塑扭曲的人文及都市的多維面貌，為小說提供種種歧義的解讀，增加作品闡釋的空間與美學價值。可惜到目前為止， 香港文學對精神疾病敘事的研究並不足夠。

因此，本論文以1990-2010 年間發表及出版，並以精神疾病為敘事主題的香港短篇小說作為研究對象， 結合精神病學的醫學研究成果及敘事學 （Narratology）的相關論述，以精神疾病的敘事作用作為研究框架，從「個人」 和「社會」兩個層面為切入點，分析精神疾病之於文學主題的敘事作用。最後， 探討作家如何透過（集體）書寫精神疾病，反映出香港九十年代至今的時代性， 及形塑出香港都市支離破碎、浮動而不穩定的形象，從而肯定精神疾病書寫對於香港文學的價值。

The Curacao North Sea Jazz Festival (CNSJF) attracted during the past three annual festivals 12,542 tourists, generated nearly US$22 million in direct spending due to the festival and had a total contribution of nearly US$40 million to the Curacao economy. These unprecedented results are even more significant considering the unique funding source of this festival, which is backed by a private investment source. Private investments in festival production are a financial funding source that is not common in the event industry, especially when considering the significant economic benefits the CNSJF has generated for Curacao. Today’s festivities, celebrating the bicentenary year of William Vincent Wallace at Ireland’s National Concert Hall, represent the realization of a personal dream. For several years I have admired Wallace’s music and performed it whenever the opportunity presented itself and it has always struck me as strange that it is not better known and appreciated. Like many other Irish composers, Wallace has languished without acknowledgement – Irish audiences have certainly had few opportunities to hear his music in recent years. FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.
