The Battle of Brier Creek on March 3, 1779 has been overlooked for many years by historians of the American War of Independence in Georgia. Because it was so brief and did not include massive field armies, the importance of the battle has been ignored. This is unfortunate as the Battle of Brier Creek had many severe consequences and changed the direction of the war in Georgia. The loss of men, arms, and equipment derailed Patriot offensive plans and gave the British valuable time to secure their position in the small frontier colony. It allowed them to establish civil government …

The Pollitics, Milieu And Music Of Black Metal, Darren Jorgensen

Sound Scripts

The genre of black metal music and its association with violence, Satanism and paganism offers an opportunity to think through the political dimensions of music. This essay argues against Ronald Bogue's depoliticisation of black metal through Deleuzian theory, instead defending the possibility of a politics that inheres to the form of different music. Violence, I argue here, is an extension of the milieu that black metal gave rise to.Musical experience correlates with political acts of church burning, black metal music carrying with it the politics of the milieu that it created.

In Australia, as with much of the world, landscape photography has played a significant role in raising awareness of human impact on the environment. For the most part, this awareness raises questions of conservation and preserving the natural world. Landscape photography commonly depicts environmental issues in one of two ways: the damaging effects of humanity’s mastery over the environment; or the sublime wonder of nature. In effect, the messages sent by landscape photography are singular, describing either nature, or culture. Advancing The Human Right To Housing In Post-Katrina New Orleans: Discursive Opportunity Structures In Housing And Community Development, Leigh Graham

In post-Katrina New Orleans, housing and community development (HCD) advocates clashed over the future of public housing. This case study examines the evolution of and limits to a human right to housing frame introduced by one nongovernmental organization (NGO). Ferree’s concept of the discursive opportunity structure and Bourdieu’s social field ground this NGO’s failure to advance a radical economic human rights frame, given its choice of a political inside strategy that opened up for HCD NGOs after Hurricane Katrina. Strategic and ideological differences within the field limited the efficacy of this rights-based frame, which was seen as politically radical and …

The purpose of my thesis project is to develop and document an approach to costume design that would support this method by creating realistic visual images of the characters the actors developed. The federal Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended, defines a historically Black institution of higher education as "any historically Black college or university that was established prior to 1964, whose principle mission was, and is, the education of Black Americans." Today, there are approximately 105 HBCUs, more than half private, the rest public, and a few two-year institutions (Allen, Jewell, Griffin, & Wolf, 2007). While currently only 14 percent of Black college students attend HBCUs, 70 percent of all Black doctors and dentists, 50 percent of all Black engineers and public school teachers, and 35 percent of all Black …

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, American culture experienced a profound fascination with primitivism, wilderness, and raw nature. Numerous outdoor activities became increasingly popular as Americans sought to revitalize the national vigor they envisioned as inextricably connected to a life close to nature. One of these activities was woodcraft camping; that is, a minimalistic form of wilderness recreation that valued simplicity and self-sufficiency as opposed to luxuriant idleness. Woodcraft campers expressed a deep dissatisfaction with what they considered to be the mind-numbing, spirit-crushing emptiness of modem life. In this thesis, I seek to uncover the nature of translation through examining those elements of "Wulf and Eadwacer" that work against producing a definitive translation. Using the combined lenses of literary analysis and the philosophy of language, I will also investigate the ties between translation and interpretation inherent in this work and what we can learn about the project of translation in general, ultimately arriving at my own re-presentation of the text. Looking through the lens of Anglo-Saxon womens' roles as peaceweavers, cupbearers, inciters or "whetting women" in their ability to practice and assert power, resistance and agency within conjugal bonds with husbands or lovers, we can better understand the ambiguous Old English poem The Wife's Lament. By exploring the poem, documents that history has left us, and previous foundational research, I will investigate whether the role women played in Anglo Saxon society mattered, and if either way, they had significant opportunity for agency.
