The Intellectual Standard

It is with great pleasure that I introduce The Intellectual Standard to Illinois Wesleyan University. The Intellectual Standard is an interdisci­plinary' student-run academic journal. With philosophy as its fundamen­tal base, it covers a myriad of topics, including the social sciences, the natu­ral sciences, current events, culture, and art. Its goal is to bring intellectual thought into the mainstream environment of Illinois Wesleyan University, and thereby set an intellectual standard for students, professors, and publi­cations alike.

There is an all-pervasive assault, especially in schools, on "gen­dered" language. Increasingly, it is not acceptable to say he or she, him or her, et cetera (Martyna, 1980). These terms are seen as exclusionary to any and every unspecified party. Instead, students are required to say one, person, s/he or some other non-specific,arbitrary, "gender-neutral" term. The epicenter of the assault, posited as the pinnacle of linguistic evil, is the term man. Man, the assailants say, only denotes males. Females are the excluded party, and thus the use of the term is sexist (Kleinman, 2007). The solution, then, …

It challenges us to face the truth. It tells us when we are wrong. It can sometimes bewilder us with its brutal simplicity. Some call it logic or rational thinking. Philosophy is typically considered a thought-provoking science appropriately reserved for discussion between "intellectuals;' and NAS­CAR contrarily carries a stigma of uneducated masses of fans supporting a racer of their choice with a frequently drunken passion. Thus, the mar­riage of these two topics may seem entirely inappropriate. Despite their conflicting stereotypes, philosophy and NASCAR must not necessarily be separated. Philosophy-at least the right philosophy-exalts the use of the mind in furthering man's capabilities and simultaneously seeks to under­stand the limitations imposed by nature. Comprehending language, a task that chil­dren can begin to develop by their second or third birthday, has only just reached a consistently usable level. Even with years of research, IBM's Wat­son, which competed against two all-time Jeopardy! contestants, was un­able to detect many of the nuances of human communication. 近年，日本語教育では，日本語中・上級レベルにおいて内容重視型カリキュラムや批判的思考力を取り入れた学習活動を採用する動向がみられている。一方で，初級レベルでは，教科書の基本文法，語彙，表現，漢字を学習するという言語習得を重要視した伝統的なカリキュラムが組まれている。ここで，問題になるのが，教科書中心の初級カリキュラムに慣れた学習者が中級レベルに進む際に，教科書外の教材を中心とした内容重視型カリキュラムで求められる自律学習能力に欠けているという現状である。本稿では，情報リテラシーをどのように言語学習活動に応用できるのかを検討し，日本語教師と図書館員の協働作業のもと，日本語教育と情報リテラシー教育を融合させたカリキュラムを作成し，アメリカ私立女子大学の１つであるスミス大学の日本語１年生コースで実践した例を紹介する。初級レベルから情報リテラシーを言語学習能力と共に培うことは，学習者の初級から中級レベルへの移行をスムーズにし，言語・文化・社会情報に関わる内容重視型の学習活動に必要とされる自律学習能力の育成に役に立つのではないかと考える。

Programmable reversible logic is emerging as a prospective logic design style for implementation in modern nanotechnology and quantum computing with minimal impact on circuit heat generation. Recent advances in reversible logic using and quantum computer algorithms allow for improved computer architecture and arithmetic logic unit designs. In this paper, a 2*2 Swap gate which is a reduced implementation in terms of quantum cost and delay to the previous Swap gate is presented. Next, a novel 3*3 programmable UPG gate capable of calculating the fundamental logic calculations is presented and verified, and its advantages over the Toffoli and Peres gates are …

Foundations Of Skeptical Theism: Cornea, Core, And Conditional Probabilities, Stephen J. Wykstra, Timothy Perrine

Some skeptical theists use Wykstra's CORNEA constraint to undercut Rowestyle inductive arguments from evil. Many critics of skeptical theism accept CORNEA, but argue that Rowe-style arguments meet its constraint. But Justin McBrayer argues that CORNEA is itself mistaken. It is, he claims, akin to "sensitivity" or "truth-tracking" constraints like those of Robert Nozick; but counterexamples show that inductive evidence is often insensitive. We here defend CORNEA against McBrayer's chief counterexample. We first clarify CORNEA, distinguishing it from a deeper underlying principle that we dub "CORE." We then give both principles a probabilistic construal, and show how, on this construal, the …

Within popular culture of the seventeenth and eighteenth century, the intermingling of Islamic and English Protestant identity was a recurring topic of debate and anxiety in the English cultural imagination. Examining the shifting representations from Early Modern Era to nineteenth-century concepts of race, nation and empire, Sway presents the eighteenth century as a turning point in public perceptions, the moments when English subjects began to believe British imperial power was a reality rather than an aspiration.

Social Interaction At The Maya Site Of Copan, Honduras: A Least Cost Approach To Configurational Analysis, Heather Richards-Rissetto

In this article, I employ least cost paths using GIS to measure the relationship between site configuration and social connectivity at the ancient Maya site of Copan, Honduras. I investigate two questions. First, did people of different social classes experience varying degrees of social connectivity? Second, did people living in different parts of the city experience difference degrees of social connectivity? Ultimately, the goal is modify traditional configurational analysis using least cost analysis (LCA) to identify how social hierarchy was embedded in landscapes and how ancient people may have strategically manipulated landscapes to structure social interaction and community organization.

Part One: The story of Maine Medical Center is rooted in Victorian America and owes much to the social conscience of the times. Great changes were taking place in the years preceding the construction of Maine’s first general hospital. Industrialization, European immigration, breakthroughs in medical science, new public health policies, and the Civil War formed the crucible out of which it emerged. Only 100 years before, such an institution would have been virtually unimaginable.
