Background In 2001 a report on the provision of clinical ethics support in UK healthcare institutions identified 20 clinical ethics committees. Since then there has been no systematic evaluation or documentation of their work at a national level. Recent national surveys of clinical ethics services in other countries have identified wide variation in practice and scope of activities.

Objective To describe the current provision of ethics support in the UK and its development since 2001.

Method A postal/electronic questionnaire survey administered to the chairs of all 82 clinical ethics services registered with the UK Clinical Ethics Network in July 2010. …

"This paper explores techniques in theatrical improvisation and discovers how they can be applied to jazz improvisation pedagogy. Improvised character and narrative are addressed from a theatrical standpoint and techniques are demonstrated to be easily relatable to jazz. The author proposes some techniques for use by educators of jazz improvisation and gives examples of how to teach simple concepts to ensembles using theatrical methods. It is the intent that these concepts will help develop soloists who perform jazz solos from a storytelling standpoint. Stradling taught at EWU for many years and as well as being of significance to the history of the university,this collection also contains material regarding the history, geography, and geology of Washington State and the Pacific Northwest. Stradling was interested in the natural forces that shaped the geography of the Inland Northwest. We argue that genuine biological autonomy, or described at human level as free will, requires taking into account quantum vacuum processes in the context of biological teleology. One faces at least three basic problems of genuine biological autonomy: (1) if biological autonomy is not physical, where does it come from? (2) Is there a room for biological causes? And (3) how to obtain a workable model of biological teleology? It is shown here that the solution of all these three problems is related to the quantum vacuum. This book began as a series of classes that I gave to the monks at New Camaldoli Hermitage, Big Sur, California. The monks encouraged me to publish the material. Later when I was teaching a course on the New Testament at the School for Deacons in Berkeley, I remarked that every preacher should preach on "sin" at least twice a year. My students seemed surprised and intrigued and asked me to explain. I attempted to do so briefly, but the explanation was not adequate. Later another member of the faculty heard that I thought that deacons should at least occasionally …

Ethiopian Scroll, Karena Bennett

Gift of the Word

PSU student Karena Bennett presents her research on the creation and meaning of an Ethiopian magic scroll from the 19^th century. Scrolls such as this were created for individuals, inscribed with specific prayers and then worn as talismans. The text is in Ge’ez, an Ethiopian liturgical language, and the images depict guardian angels and a priest watching over the supplicant. The scroll is made of vellum and was originally a single continuous piece.

Christians today sometimes debate the propriety of contemporary worship styles. Examining features of Exodus's tabernacle in light of cultures surrounding ancient Israel offers one biblical model for contextual worship. These features reveal that this model was relevant to its cultural setting Some contextual elements fit Israel's setting merely out of necessity or expediency. Other elements employ existing forms, sometimes even from non-Israelite religious practices, to communicate a point intelligible within that cultural sphere. Still other elements show striking contrasts with surrounding cultures, contrasts highlighted all the more conspicuously by the aforementioned similarities. The 2012 season of excavations at Bethsaida took place during May 21th and June 28. There had been altogether 120 students and faculty working at the site. As every year the expedition was housed at Kibbutz Ginosar and we are very grateful for the long standing extraordinary hospitality that has been consistently shown to the expedition since 1994.
