Dying For The Nation: Rite Of Passage, Homoeroticism And Martyrdom In The Falangist Narrative During The Spanish Civil War, Iker González-Allende Jan 2012

Dying For The Nation: Rite Of Passage, Homoeroticism And Martyrdom In The Falangist Narrative During The Spanish Civil War, Iker González-Allende

Spanish Language and Literature Papers

Eugenio o proclamación de la Primavera (1938) by Rafael García Serrano, and Unificación (1937) by Jacinto Miquelarena are two propagandistic works in which the male protagonists most fully embody the core values of Falangist masculinity. The glorification of youth appears clearly in the two texts, along with an emphasis on violence. War becomes the rite of passage for the two male protagonists, who also renounce romantic relationships to devote themselves to the nation. The two main characters find in their fellow comrades a substitute for their families; in this sense, the nation is constructed as a masculine project. The presence …

Decolonizing The Modernist Mind, Alpana Sharma Jan 2012

Decolonizing The Modernist Mind, Alpana Sharma

English Language and Literatures Faculty Publications

Cataclysmic changes in the world require new accommodations to it, new ways of articulating the strangeness that abounds. Literary modernism of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries- the main period under study in this special issue-sought precisely to capture that sense of strangeness, matching it and expressing it with new aesthetic forms, styles, and subject matter. But these early forms of expression which delineated the contours of a startling new reality-the technologies of photography and cinema, scientific discoveries, new modes of transportation, global war, postwar trauma, new class and gender formations, the birth of the unconscious, the erosion of an …

Preferences Of And Attitudes Toward Treble Choral Ensembles, Jill M. Wilson Jan 2012

Preferences Of And Attitudes Toward Treble Choral Ensembles, Jill M. Wilson

Research & Issues in Music Education

In choral ensembles, a pursuit where females far outnumber males, concern exists that females are being devalued. Attitudes of female choral singers may be negatively affected by the gender imbalance that exists in mixed choirs and by the placement of the mixed choir as the most select ensemble in a program. The purpose of this research was to determine student and choral educator perceptions of and attitudes toward treble clef choral ensembles.

Results support the existence of a stigma toward treble clef choirs as second-place ensembles. A majority of students who were surveyed and interviewed chose the mixed choir as …

How Participants Envision Community Music In Welsh Men’S Choirs, Debbie Rohwer, Mark Rohwer

Research & Issues in Music Education

The purpose of this study was to describe choristers’ perceptions of Welsh men’s choir participation. Four choirs were observed in concert and rehearsal settings across Wales. Focus group interviews were conducted with between 4 and 10 members in each of the 4 choral settings for a total of 24 total interview respondents. The interviewees had a spread of years of male choir participation, from 4 months to 47 years, and a spread of ages, with members ranging in age from 32 to 89. The interview questions were designed to be flexible, yet focused. An interview guide was organized with a …

Composition Instruction And Cognitive Performance: Results Of A Pilot Study, Jennifer Bugos, Edward Jacobs Jan 2012

Composition Instruction And Cognitive Performance: Results Of A Pilot Study, Jennifer Bugos, Edward Jacobs

Research & Issues in Music Education

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a composition program, Composers in Public Schools (CiPS), on cognitive skills essential for academic success. The underlying hypothesis is that composition instruction will promote creative expression and increase performance on music-specific skills such as music reading, as well as foster general analytical/aural skill development associated with vocabulary, arithmetic, and processing speed abilities. Two sixth-grade classes assigned to the experimental (n = 15) and control (n = 13) groups completed a series of standardized neuropsychological and cognitive assessments pre and post-instruction. Results of a Repeated Measures ANOVA (Group …

Himie Voxman: His Contributions To Music Education, Bruce Gleason

Research & Issues in Music Education

Himie Voxman is a name few instrumental teachers and students of the past fifty years would fail to recognize. His method books and arrangements are in school districts and private studios across the United States, serving as a testimony to his influence as a teacher, scholar, editor and arranger. Spirituality And Synagogue Music: A Case Study Of Two Synagogue Music Ensembles, Carol Shansky Jan 2012

Spirituality And Synagogue Music: A Case Study Of Two Synagogue Music Ensembles, Carol Shansky

Research & Issues in Music Education

Participation in community music ensembles is an important and popular form of music education—with members of ensembles that perform within religious services having the opportunity of experiencing a possible extra dimension of a spiritual experience. Thus the intent of this study was to survey adult choir and band members at Temple Emeth in Teaneck, New Jersey, USA in terms of connections between music performance, educational experiences and spirituality. Thoughts and reflections of the participants as well as those of the clergy and choir director were gained through qualitative, open-ended interviews. Overall, it was found that participating in a synagogue musical …

Review Of Menc Handbook Of Research On Music Learning (Vols. 1 & 2), Oxford University Press, 2011, Edited By Richard Colwell And Peter Webster., Nathan Buonviri

Research & Issues in Music Education

Music educators and researchers regularly seek new ideas and current information about effective teaching and learning at all levels of instruction. The vast quantity of completed studies, and the time required to review, edit, and publish them, often puts readers at a disadvantage when trying to collect and organize current, relevant literature on a given topic. The MENC Handbook of Research on Music Learning provides excellent syntheses of the most recent research on multiple topics with “a laserlike focus on what is at present known about learning [italics added for emphasis] in music” (p. v).

This handbook provides a thorough, …

Notes From The Editor, Bruce Gleason

Research & Issues in Music Education

I’m having difficulty believing that I’m writing notes for the tenth anniversary issue of Research and Issues in Music Education.  What began as an experiment a dozen plus years ago seems to have caught on, and I’m grateful for our editorial board, web managers, contributors and to our readership—all of whom have made this possible. It’s been quite a decade and I’m looking forward to seeing where the next one takes us.

Relationally Aggressive Media Exposure And Children’S Normative Beliefs: Does Parental Mediation Matter?, Jennifer Ruh Linder, Nicole E. Werner Jan 2012

Relationally Aggressive Media Exposure And Children’S Normative Beliefs: Does Parental Mediation Matter?, Jennifer Ruh Linder, Nicole E. Werner

Faculty Publications

Research indicates that relationally aggressive media exposure is positively associated with relational aggression in children. Theories of media effects suggest that these associations may be mediated by aggressive cognitions. Although parental mediation can attenuate the effects of violent media, it is unknown whether there are similar benefits of parental mediation of relationally aggressive media. The current study examined concurrent and longitudinal associations between relationally aggressive television and movie exposure and normative beliefs about relational aggression, and whether parental mediation moderates these associations. Participants were 103 children (50% female) in grades 3-6 and their parents. The following year, 48 children (52% …

Shakespeare Burlesque And The Performing Self, Daniel Pollack-Pelzner Jan 2012

Shakespeare Burlesque And The Performing Self, Daniel Pollack-Pelzner

Faculty Publications

This paper argues that Victorian Shakespeare burlesques reveal an alternate literary history: a movement away from private, novelistic consciousness toward collaborative performance. Many materialist scholars fault post-Romantic critics for casting Shakespeare as a psychological realist and reading his plays as if they were novels. The burlesque treatment of Hamlet’s soliloquies, however, suggests a contrary trajectory, challenging the equation of Shakespearean character with psychological reflection. Rather than inaugurating a tradition of interiority, Hamlet’s soliloquies generate social speech in works like Gilbert’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, inviting audience participation. The burlesque imperative also inflects novels like Dickens’s Great Expectations, turning the …

A Type Of Communication What To Watch For In U.S. Presidential Campaign Promotional Ephemera & Typographic Choices, Amanda C.R. Clark Jan 2012

A Type Of Communication What To Watch For In U.S. Presidential Campaign Promotional Ephemera & Typographic Choices, Amanda C.R. Clark

Library Faculty Scholarship

Facets of graphic design, logo design, typefaces, and other images absorbed through rapid cognition have a psychological effect on the viewer. Well known to advertisers, these stylistic typographic choices transmit a powerful message to viewers and influence their impressions of the product (Coleman and Wasike 2003: 1). Visual design decisions may persuade at unquestioned and unconscious levels, and they may be indelibly imbued with their historical identity. How then do these choices, when applied to the promotional materials of political campaigns, affect the stylistic impressions made by printed materials, such as posters, bumper stickers, lawn signs, and buttons? By examining …

Jesus The Gardener: A Revised Perspective Of A Favourite New Testament Scene, James Cregan Jan 2012

Jesus The Gardener: A Revised Perspective Of A Favourite New Testament Scene, James Cregan

Theology Conference Papers

Mary Magdalene’s encounter with the risen Christ in the garden in which he was entombed, described in John 20:14-15, is one of the most poignant in the entire Bible. If we are to accept the interpretation of some commentaries, Mary, when she finds the tomb empty, in her grief induced confusion[1] fails to recognise Jesus when he appears to her, supposing him to be the gardener. Her fear is that the same people who have killed him have removed his body. It is only when Jesus calls to her by name that there ensues what has been described as …

Conceptualising The Structure Of The Biophysical Organising Principle: Triple-Aspect-Theory Of Being, Joseph Naimo Jan 2012

Conceptualising The Structure Of The Biophysical Organising Principle: Triple-Aspect-Theory Of Being, Joseph Naimo

Philosophy Papers and Journal Articles

When examining the human being as a conscious being, we are still to arrive at an understanding of, firstly, the conditions required whereby physical processes give rise to consciousness and secondly, how consciousness is something fundamental to life as an intrinsic part of nature. Humans are complex organisms with myriad interacting systems whereby the convergence of the activities toward the support and development of the whole organism requires a high level of organisation. Though what accounts for the dynamic unity of the human being? From an empirical perspective the question remains unanswered. The aim of this paper is to conceptually …

Multiple Intelligences, Eclecticism And The Therapeutic Alliance: New Possibilities In Integrative Counsellor Education, Mark Pearson Jan 2012

Multiple Intelligences, Eclecticism And The Therapeutic Alliance: New Possibilities In Integrative Counsellor Education, Mark Pearson

Arts Conference Papers

In the wake of the movement in the field of counselling towards integrative and eclectic practice the search for unifying theories continues. Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences (MI), only recently applied to the field of counselling, has a contribution to make in evolving a framework for eclecticism. MI theory may also have a particular contribution to make towards helping counsellors strengthen the therapeutic alliance and enhance flexibility in responding to clients' needs. Gaining an understanding of clients' preferred cognitive and communication styles, or 'intelligences', enhances an ability to tailor treatment. This presentation argues that increases in the therapeutic alliance and …

Creativity, Fragments Of The History Of An Idea, Camilla Nelson Jan 2012

Creativity, Fragments Of The History Of An Idea, Camilla Nelson

Arts Conference Papers

It is frequently maintained that creativity is a desirable and wholly positive attribute — implicit in such a claim is the idea that creativity is also an ideologically neutral attribute. Creativity is regularly understood to exist beyond ideology and politics, and more significantly, perhaps, beyond history. For this reason, cultural histories of the creative idea commonly take a substantialist approach to their object of study — in that they take as their starting point an idea of creativity as a fixed or substantial reality that exists outside and beyond the historical field. The manifold possibilities of history are therefore reduced …

Slavery, Imprinted: The Life And Narrative Of William Grimes, Susanna Ashton Jan 2012

Slavery, Imprinted: The Life And Narrative Of William Grimes, Susanna Ashton

Publications

In 1824, in a fury over the injustices of slavery, racism in the North, and exploitation of the workingman, William Grimes wrote the story of his life. The Life of William Grimes, the Runaway Slave (1825) ends with a visceral and violent image of literary sacrifice: Grimes offers to skin himself in order to authorize the national story of the United States:

If it were not for the stripes on my back which were made while I was a slave, I would in my will leave my skin as a legacy to the gover(n)ment, desiring that it might be taken …

Modernizing Matthew Paris: The Standards And Practices Of The First Printed Editions, Kristen Geaman Jan 2012

Modernizing Matthew Paris: The Standards And Practices Of The First Printed Editions, Kristen Geaman

Quidditas

This article discusses the first printed editions of Mathew Paris’s thirteenth-century chronicle, Chronica Maiora, arguing that these editions show a much higher level of editorial sophistication than has yet been recognized. Written between 1235 and 1259, the Chronica Maiora is one of the most extensive and detailed chronicles of medieval England; yet the work was not printed until 1571, as part of a series of historical publications overseen by Matthew Parker, Archbishop of Canterbury. Although the text of Parker’s edition has been almost universally criticized by scholars, this work suggests that he actually set a high editorial standard, especially by …
