A Genealogical Review Of The Worldview Concept And Framework In Africana Studies-Related Theory And Research, Karanja Keita Carroll Jan 2012

A Genealogical Review Of The Worldview Concept And Framework In Africana Studies-Related Theory And Research, Karanja Keita Carroll

Publications and Research

Daudi Ajani Ya Azibo's "Articulating the Distinction between Black Studies and the Study of Blacks: The Fundamental Role of Culture and the African-Centered Worldview" originally published in the Afrocentric Scholar and republished in both editions of Nathaniel Norment Jr.'s African American Studies Reader, provides much needed clarity on the philosophical foundations of Black Studies. However, Azibo's work is connected to an earlier project, Syed M. Khatib's (aka Cedric X. Clark) "Black Studies or the Study of Black People: Reflections on the Distinctive Characteristics of Black Psychology." Both Azibo and Khatib ask an important question related to the philosophical foundations of …

Accurate Player Modeling And Cheat-Proof Gameplay In Peer-To-Peer Based Multiplayer Online Games, Daniel Everett Pittman Jr. Jan 2012

Accurate Player Modeling And Cheat-Proof Gameplay In Peer-To-Peer Based Multiplayer Online Games, Daniel Everett Pittman Jr.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

We present the first detailed measurement study and models of the virtual populations in popular Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs). Our results show that, amongst several MMORPGs with very different play styles, the patterns of behaviors are consistent and can be described using a common set of models.

In addition, we break down actions common to Trading Card Games (TCGs) and explain how they can be executed between players without the need for a third party referee. In each action, the player is either prevented from cheating, or if they do cheat, the opponent will be able to prove …

Through The Eyes Of Visitors: Understanding The Contexts Of The Visitor Photo Study At The Denver Museum Of Nature & Science, Kathryn Irene Schroeder

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This case study describes the analysis of the Visitor Photo Study, a study in which visitors to the Denver Museum of Nature & Science documented their visit through pictures. The origins, implementation, and findings of the Visitor Photo Study are considered within the contexts of the fields of Community-Based Research (Strand, Marullo, Cutforth, Stoecker, & Donohue, 2003b), Visual Studies (Marshall & Rossman, 2011; Pink, 2007), and Visitor Studies (Visitor Studies Association, 2012). This study considers the extent to which the principles and elements of each of these fields were present in the Visitor Photo Study, which elements were not fully …

In Defense Of Leibniz's Theodicy, Nathan A. Jacobs Jan 2012

In Defense Of Leibniz's Theodicy, Nathan A. Jacobs

CTS PhD Doctoral Dissertations

G. W. Leibniz professes a commitment to historical Christian theism, but the depth and orthodoxy of his commitment has been questioned throughout the past three centuries. In this project I defend both the cogency and the orthodoxy of Leibniz’s philosophical theology and, by extension, its application to the Christian task of theodicy. At the heart of this defense is the central claim of this project, namely, that Leibniz’s philosophical theology represents a traditional brand of Augustinianism. In short, I argue that Leibniz’s theodicy is not his own, but is the tacit claim of a longstanding theological tradition made explicit and …

Empowerment Of The Socially Vulnerable - Social Inclusion Through Theater Workshops And Arts Management: A Case Study In An Urban Slum Of Bangkok, Hiroyuki Nobuto Jan 2012

Empowerment Of The Socially Vulnerable - Social Inclusion Through Theater Workshops And Arts Management: A Case Study In An Urban Slum Of Bangkok, Hiroyuki Nobuto

Journal of Urban Culture Research

The purpose of this paper is to focus on the social vulnerability of slum residents in times of disaster and to consider the possibilities of self-empowerment by the cultivation of "actual abilities" through theater workshops. The author has focused on the Nang Loeng Community, occupying an urban slum in Bangkok, and with the cooperation of a Japanese theater company, has carried out a four-day theater workshop for elementary school students in the name of an "evacuation drill." Interviews and questionnaires were conducted to the residents and participants to examine the possibilities of adopting this method in the community. It was …

The Destruction Of Heritage - Rock Art In The Burrup Peninsula, José Antonio González Zarandona Jan 2012

The Destruction Of Heritage - Rock Art In The Burrup Peninsula, José Antonio González Zarandona

Journal of Urban Culture Research

The destruction of rock art in the Burrup Peninsula, performed by several mammoth industries strategically located in the Peninsula since the 1960s, allows me to analyze the concept of heritage and find meaning in the difficult task of interpreting rock art. The Burrup Peninsula not only hosts the largest rock art site in the world, but also one of the largest deposits of natural gas, iron ore and salt. As a consequence, the land (sacred to the Indigenous people), becomes extremely important in order to sustain the booming economy of Australia. In this difficult negotiation between heritage and progress the …

Environmental Aesthetics And Urban Soundscapes - Lucid Dreams Of Mr. William Heerlein Lindley, Zuzana Jurková

Journal of Urban Culture Research

This article describes the site-specific performance Lucid Dreams of Mr. William Heerlein Lindley in an acoustically unusual old sewage treatment plant in Prague. During this event, different kinds of sounds are combined: recordings from various places in Prague, those which are electronically generated, and actual concrete sounds produced by the participants. A part of the event was also a live EBU satellite broadcast Ecotechnical Museum in Bubenec,10/10/2009, 6 pm. The performance is presented as an example of conceptual music on one hand and as realization of ideas of the Canadian sound-ecological school by Raymond Murray Schafer (emphasizing acoustical characteristics of …

Gli Studi Classici E Il Precario Raggiungimento Della "Rilevanza", Jeremy B. Lefkowitz Jan 2012

Gli Studi Classici E Il Precario Raggiungimento Della "Rilevanza", Jeremy B. Lefkowitz

Classics Faculty Works

This talk addresses how the concept of 'relevance' has tended to be used and abused in our time, and how it has affected public attitudes towards the place of Classics in the academy. As the modern world has become increasingly pluralistic and internationalised, Classics has lost not so much its ability to appear an, indeed, be, relevant to our times, but rather its status as a cultural marker of class, sophistication, or even virtue. Over the next decades, a major challenge facing the Classics will be to discover ways in which it can reconstruct itself as a discipline so as …

Knowledge, Practical Reasoning And Action, Peter Baumann Jan 2012

Knowledge, Practical Reasoning And Action, Peter Baumann

Philosophy Faculty Works

Is knowledge necessary or sufficient or both necessary and sufficient for acceptable practical reasoning and rational action? Several authors (e.g., Williamson, Hawthorne, and Stanley) have recently argued that the answer to these questions is positive. In this paper I present several objections against this view (both in its basic form as well in more developed forms). I also offer a sketch of an alternative view: What matters for the acceptability of practical reasoning in at least many cases (and in all the cases discussed by the defenders of a strong link between knowledge and practical reasoning) is not so much …

Florida: The Mediated State, Julian C. Chambliss, Denise K. Cummings Jan 2012

Florida: The Mediated State, Julian C. Chambliss, Denise K. Cummings

Faculty Publications

"The Mediated State" addresses the perceived and the real experience linked to Florida and demonstrates the state acts as a bellwether for understanding postwar America in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Examining historical shifts linked to perceptions of the state, Chambliss and Cummings argue contemporary observers, like their historical antecedents, look to Florida to glean some greater understanding of the broader national experience.

On The Supposed Societies Of Chemicals, Atoms And Stars In Gabriel Tarde, Graham Harman Jan 2012

On The Supposed Societies Of Chemicals, Atoms And Stars In Gabriel Tarde, Graham Harman

Faculty Book Chapters

It is commonly believed that the French sociologist Gabriel Tarde allows even for inanimate objects such as chemicals, atoms, and stars to be topics of sociology. This article claims otherwise. Tarde is an arch-reductionist for whom nothing exists below the tiniest micro-level of the cosmos. His theory of monads is by no means an adequate sociology of medium- or large-sized things.

The Civil Rights Movement: The Power Of Television, Amanda Philley Jan 2012

The Civil Rights Movement: The Power Of Television, Amanda Philley

3690: A Journal of First-Year Student Research Writing

Overview: “I am not a nigger” (Thomas). These five words seared through American television screens in May of 1963. James Baldwin, a preacher and novelist, declared his freedom from the chains of discrimination in an interview with Kenneth Clark and forever changed the conscience of black and white television owners. When asked if he was optimistic or pessimistic about the future of the nation, Baldwin made one thing clear: the fate of America lies within the ability to answer the question, why was the ‘nigger’ created? Born in Harlem in 1924, Baldwin grew up following in his father’s footsteps as …
