German Film And The Frankfurt School (Spring 2012), Robert D. Tobin
German Film And The Frankfurt School (Spring 2012), Robert D. Tobin
Syllabi
German Film and the Frankfurt School is an introduction to German cinema and media criticism. It will introduce students to important German films that have had a global impact, significant theoretical approaches to those films (especially those from the “Frankfurt School”), and the historical and cultural contexts in which these films and film theories arose. The class is cross-listed in German, Holocaust and Genocide Studies, and Screen Studies. It provides a survey of an important art-form in German cultural history. Although National Socialism, the Holocaust and the Second World War are not the only themes of the course, they are …

Translation And Distortion Of Linguistic Identities In Sinophone Cinema: Diverging Images Of The ‘Other, Henry Leperlier
Translation And Distortion Of Linguistic Identities In Sinophone Cinema: Diverging Images Of The ‘Other, Henry Leperlier
Books/Book Chapters
In today’s globalized market, Asian films are being increasingly exported; often,
multilingual movies deal with more complex societal issues and catch the interest of
a foreign audience interested in having an open door, one might say multiple doors,
into another society. The nearly complete lack of a system enabling such an audience
to be made aware of the complex multilingual and multilingual characters in such
movies ends up providing a distorted and simplified view of Chinese, Taiwanese,
Hong Kong and Singaporean societies as reflected in its cinemas.
This chapter examines all the resulting issues and cultural misunderstandings that can occur …
Vanguardia, Raza Y Nación: Una Lectura De La Negritud De La Novela Mexicana Panchito Chapopote Y Del Estridentismo A La Luz Del Modernismo Brasileño Y De Macunaíma, Roberto Irizarry
Modern Languages Faculty Publications
Xavier Icaza's Panchito Chapopote contains a rare portrayal of Mexican negritude. This novel rescues an identity marginalized by the emphasis on blending European and indigenous cultures in Mexico's official discourse. This representation is also distinguished by its distancing from both Afro-Mexican exoticism and Mexican nationalism. The article sheds light on this defamiliarized portrayal of Mexican Blackness by comparing it with Mário de Andrade's Macunaíma and Brazilian modernist works in general.

Maria De Zayas: Lo Paradojico De Una Escritora Del Siglo De Oro Espanol, Nancy Vinces
Maria De Zayas: Lo Paradojico De Una Escritora Del Siglo De Oro Espanol, Nancy Vinces
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This is a study about María de Zayas y Sotomayor, a seventeenth century Spanish writer who has slowly but surely started to become one of the most read and researched female writers of her time among current scholars. Zayas’s work is that of a baroque writer and as such her critics are notorious for having divergent views about her work. The purpose of this study is to discern the reason behind the controversy that exists about her narrative. The present study is an attempt to elucidate the ambiguity around the feminist views Zayas has been adjudicated. Taking into consideration her …

Leading Social Design: What Does It Take?, Christian Bason
Leading Social Design: What Does It Take?, Christian Bason
Social Space
Across the globe, design is increasingly seen as a discipline that is central to social innovation. However, the fruitful use of design by public and social sector organisations requires leaders who are prepared to embrace new approaches such as ethnographic research, user involvement, ideation, prototyping and experimentation. Christian Bason explores how effective design practice can help realise social innovation.
Who Killed Lycidas?: Lycidas And The Spanish Tragedy, Clay Daniel
Who Killed Lycidas?: Lycidas And The Spanish Tragedy, Clay Daniel
Quidditas
In Lycidas, the protagonist searches for an explanation for why his virtuous friend has mysteriously died in a cultural-political landscape of unpunished, thriving, official corruption. Though Renaissance pastoral sometimes inveighed against corrupt authorities, pastoral elegy did not. What models, then, other than the Bible, would Milton have had for the swain’s search? Milton’s headnote calls his poem a monody, which within a literary context primarily is a speech in Greek tragedy. Milton then invites us to read the poem within a dramatic context. But which dramatic context? The Book of Revelation of course is one these contexts. But contemporary …
Libertas Philosophandi And Freedom Of Mind In Spinoza’S Tractatus Theologico-Politicus, J. Thomas Cook
Libertas Philosophandi And Freedom Of Mind In Spinoza’S Tractatus Theologico-Politicus, J. Thomas Cook
Faculty Publications
Isaiah Berlin famously distinguished between “negative” and “positive” liberty, arguing that in practice the two are often in tension with each other. This paper uses Berlin’s distinction to analyze Spinoza’s discussion of freedom in the Tractatus Theologico-Politicus. Libertas philosophandi is Spinoza’s shorthand for freedom of thought and expression – an important element in traditional liberal (“negative”) freedom. The TTP (as its subtitle announces) is devoted in great part to defending the value and importance of permitting such freedom in the state. But as commentators have often noted, Spinoza is reluctant to extend this liberty to the clerics of his …
Distant Cathedrals, Gina Ceccoli
Distant Cathedrals, Gina Ceccoli
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Utilizing the first eight measures of the Kyrie from Missa Primi Toni by Palestrina, Distant Cathedrals is a piece which connects the old with the new. The elegant voice-leading and careful regulation of dissonance in Palestrina’s panconsonant music is emblematic of late Renaissance polyphony. Given Palestrina’s position as one of Europe’s leading composers, late Renaissance counterpoint is often labeled Palestrina-style polyphony. This piece infuses the pureness of Palestrina with extended tertian and mixed-interval harmonies of the contemporary variety, while alternating and integrating Palestrina’s thematic material and Distant Cathedral’s original material. Distant Cathedrals was written for full orchestra, including: one piccolo, …

The Shape Of Catharine Sedgwick's Career, Melissa J. Homestead
The Shape Of Catharine Sedgwick's Career, Melissa J. Homestead
Department of English: Faculty Publications
Catharine Maria Sedgwick published her first novel in 1822 and her last in 1857. Her productivity slackened in the 1850S, as aging weakened her eyesight and arthritis made it difficult to write clearly. However, from 1822 through the 1840s, she published multiple works of prose fiction (tales, sketches, novellas, or novels) nearly every year. Despite this extraordinary record of productivity, Sedgwick regularly appears in literary history as the author of a single work, Hope Leslie (I827), her historical novel about relations between the Puritans and the native inhabitants of New England. A few other women authors before and contemporary with …

Virginia is growing. Between 1990 and 2000, Virginia’s population rose by over 14% - the largest population growth experienced by the state in a single decade (Pollard, 2007). And the state continues to grow. It has been estimated that by 2030, Virginia’s total population may exceed 9.8 million people (Pollard, 2007). Along with population growth, land development has increased which in turn affects transportation, housing and job placement across the Commonwealth. In fact, in many parts of the state, development has outpaced population growth. According to Pollard, “If current patterns continue, Virginia will develop more land in the next 40 …

House Bill 9 was introduced by Delegate Mark L. Cole (R – House District 88 – Fredericksburg) as chief patron with support from co-patron Delegate Charles D. Poindexter (R – House District 9 – Glade Hill). The bill states that a voter who is unable to present one of the forms of ID may sign a sworn statement that he/she is the named registered voter he/she claims to be and then be allowed to vote a provisional ballot. The current law allows such a voter to cast an official ballot rather than a provisional one after signing such statement. We …

Freedom In Education: The Movement To Educate The Freedmen In The Pee Dee Region During Reconstruction, Aliyyah Willis
Freedom In Education: The Movement To Educate The Freedmen In The Pee Dee Region During Reconstruction, Aliyyah Willis
Bridges: A Journal of Student Research
During Reconstruction a movement gained momentum to educate the newly freed slaves in the South. Historians have agreed that the impetus for that movement came from the freedmen, as they came to be called, as well as northern missionary societies and religious aid associations. In South Carolina that impetus started in the Sea Islands around Charleston. Many historians have studied what is known as the Port Royal Experiment and the educational programs in Columbia and Orangeburg, particularly as they pertain to the higher education institutions for African Americans that arose from these efforts. But no one has specifically studied what …

Japoñolés: El Uso Del Japonés, Español E Inglés En La Comunidad Peruano Japonesa, Lily Niland
Fulbright Grantee Projects
In today's global economy, people from diverse cultures strive to find a balance between cultivating their heritage language and mastering the dominant languages that create economic opportunities. This ethnographic study examines a specific case of this cultural, linguistic, and emotional struggle by analyzing language mixture, usage, and change among the descendents of Japanese immigrants (Nikkei) in Lima, Peru. Participant observation, analysis of written sources, and recordings of public speeches and conversations in small groups are used to examine the current linguistic situation among diverse groups within the community; individual interviews are then used to explore the linguistic experiences, …

Polychoral Performance Practice And "Maestro Di Cappella" Conducting, Florian Bassani
Polychoral Performance Practice And "Maestro Di Cappella" Conducting, Florian Bassani
Performance Practice Review
This article disputes some basic questions concerning the coordination of seventeenth century sacred music, approaching the phenomenon through a musical species of particular interest, though largely unstudied from a performance practice point of view. Roman polychorality with its specific performing conditions offers an illuminating perspective on principles of musical direction and interaction which differ significantly from our modern access path towards these topics. The inquiry ranges from basics of performance (such as sheet music, rehearsals, direction technics, models and stylistic conditioning of the performers) over the concrete role of the maestro di cappella as well as the tactus as cornerstones …

Re-Visioning Reason, Revelation, And Rejection In John Locke's An Essay Concerning Human Understanding And John Toland's Christianity Not Mysterious., Jonathan S. Marko
CTS PhD Doctoral Dissertations
Histories of philosophy that cover the rise of natural religion in England will inevitably move from John Locke to John Toland. The typical account portrays Locke as sincerely Christian and trying to balance the demands of faith and reason. His rationalistic epistemology in An Essay Concerning Human Understanding (Essay) even defends doctrines that are “above reason.” Toland is portrayed as a disciple of Locke whose modified Lockean epistemology in Christianity Not Mysterious (CNM) results in a subordination of revelation to reason and a dismissal of doctrines that are above reason. More detailed treatments note that CNM is the catalyst of …
