Dynamic Aspects Of Musical Imagery, Andrea R. Halpern
Dynamic Aspects Of Musical Imagery, Andrea R. Halpern
Faculty Conference Papers and Presentations
Auditory imagery can represent many aspects of music, such as the starting pitches of a tune or the instrument that typically plays it. In this paper, I concentrate on more dynamic, or time-sensitive aspects of musical imagery, as demonstrated in two recently published studies. The first was a behavioral study that examined the ability to make emotional judgments about both heard and imagined music in real time. The second was a neuroimaging study on the neural correlates of anticipating an upcoming tune, after hearing a cue tune. That study found activation of several sequence-learning brain areas, some of which varied …

A Guide To Acquiring Healthy Nutrition And Fitness Habits For College Students: Preventing Diabetes, Hypertension, Coronary Heart Disease, And Stroke, Darin P. Dillinger
Master of Humanities Capstone Projects
For the past three decades, obesity has been cited as a growing epidemic in the United States, according to the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM). Obesity is a major contributing problem to a number of medical conditions. Studies in the NEJM have “correlated obesity with myriad cancers, coronary heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and stroke,” and other health-related problems (Fumento). Healthcare experts, doctors, and practitioners estimate it will cost billions of dollars a year to bring this problem under control and it is a major contributing factor in the rising cost of healthcare (Oliver 1). Luppold, Violette, and other practitioners …

Culla Mi Gullah, Re-Imagining African American Female Artists And The Sea Islands: Exploring Africanisms And Religious Expressions In Creative Works, Rebekkah Mulholland
Master of Humanities Capstone Projects
While the Sea Islands have captured the interest of scholars and artists, especially since Zora Neale Hurston’s groundbreaking novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God (1937), this thesis provides a historiography of Africanisms and religious expressions explored in Gullah literary traditions within African-American women’s fiction, specifically with regards to the works of Julie Dash and Tina McElroy Ansa. Following Hurston’s example, during the 1980s Toni Morrison, Toni Cade Bambara and Paule Marshall further laid the groundwork for writers to signify upon. This qualitative study of Dash’s 1991 film and novel Daughters of the Dust (1997) along with Ansa’s novels Baby of …

The Problem Of Debt-For-Nature Swaps From A Human Rights Perspective, Nicole Hassoun
The Problem Of Debt-For-Nature Swaps From A Human Rights Perspective, Nicole Hassoun
Philosophy Faculty Scholarship
At first blush, debt-for-nature swaps seem to provide win-win solutions to the looming problems of environmental degradation and extreme poverty. So, one might naturally assume that they are morally permissible, if not obligatory. This article will argue, however, that debt-for-nature swaps are sometimes morally questionable, if not morally impermissible. It suggests that some criticisms of traditional (economic) conditions placed on loans to poor countries also apply to the (environmental) conditionality implicit in such swaps. The article's main theoretical contribution is to suggest a general argumentative strategy for posing a challenge to the moral acceptability of many seemingly innocuous, or even …
Global Health Impact: A Basis For Labeling And Licensing Campaigns?, Nicole Hassoun
Global Health Impact: A Basis For Labeling And Licensing Campaigns?, Nicole Hassoun
Philosophy Faculty Scholarship
Most of the world's health problems afflict poor countries and their poorest inhabitants. There are many reasons why so many people die of poverty-related causes. One reason is that the poor cannot access many of the existing drugs and technologies they need. Another, is that little of the research and development (R&D) done on new drugs and technologies benefits the poor. There are several proposals on the table that might incentivize pharmaceutical companies to extend access to essential drugs and technologies to the global poor.1 Still, the problem remains – the poor are suffering and dying from lack of …

"The Borders Between Us": Loren Eiseley's Ecopoetics, Thomas Lynch
Department of English: Faculty Publications
Loren Eiseley's literary reputation today rests almost exclusively on the significance of his nonfiction nature essays, which deservedly stand as influential exemplars of creative nonfiction science and nature writing. However, in his early years as an undergraduate at the University of Nebraska, Eiseley had the reputation as an important and promising poet, and he published poetry in a range of literary journals. Most notably, his work appeared in the earliest editions of Prairie Schooner, whose editorial staff he joined in 1927, the year after it began publication. And, not limited to his own school's journal, he a variety of other …

Venn (Fragments After A Lecture On The History Of Photography, In Two Parts), Ronan Mccrea
Exhibitions
Venn (Fragments after a lecture on the history of photography, in two parts) is a projected 35mm slide installation which appropriates slide reproductions of photography from the modernist and contemporary canon that at one time formed part of two lectures given by the artist to undergraduate students.
Deploying what can be called a ‘reprographic’ approach, the slides are optically duplicated, cropped, repositioned and cut-up, while the use of various blue and orange filters – employed in photographic lighting to convert the colour of a light to either daylight or tungsten light – correspond to, and at times confuse, the supposedly …

Web Supported Emplotment: Using Object And Event Descriptions To Facilitate Storytelling Online And In Galleries, Trevor Collins, Paul Mulholland, Annika Wolff
Publications
The process of emplotment refers to the selection of significant events in a story and the identification of pertinent relations between them, in order to produce a plot providing an interpretation of those events. We are investigating how models of emplotment can be applied to develop web-based tools for creating and interpreting narratives. In particular, we are focusing on the process undertaken by art gallery professionals to design and present exhibitions. This paper presents a set of plot relations developed in collaboration with museum professionals from two national galleries in Ireland, and shows how theories of narrative and digital cultural …

The Role Of Apologetics In Mormon Studies, Daniel C. Peterson
The Role Of Apologetics In Mormon Studies, Daniel C. Peterson
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
T he following essay was presented on 3 August 2012 as “Of ‘Mormon Studies’ and Apologetics” at the conclusion of the an nual conference of the Foundation for Apologetic Information and Research (FAIR) in Sandy, Utah. It represents the first pub lic announcement and appearance of Interpreter: A Journal of Mormon Scripture, which had been founded only slightly more than a week earlier, on 26 July. In my view, that rapid launch was the near-miraculous product of selfless collaboration and devotion to a cause on the part of several people—notable among them David E. Bokovoy, Alison V. P. Coutts, William …
Attacking Rather Than Explaining, Cassandra Hedelius
Attacking Rather Than Explaining, Cassandra Hedelius
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
In his book on Mormonism, the Reverend Andrew Jackson claims to explain “the teaching and practices of the LDS Church,” with an intended audience of non-Mormon Christians but also “interested Mormons.” He doesn’t succeed well. Although his presentation of Mormon history is mostly fair, his discussion of the faith of Latter-day Saints devolves into the usual anti-Mormon tropes, to which he adds a celebration of a simplified evangelical theology. What might have been a useful, straightforward account of The Church of Jesus Christ and its history ended up, instead, as a clumsy attack. Reverend Jackson eventually re-released his book under …

Shaken Faith Syndrome And The Case For Faith, Stephen O. Smoot
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Michael R. Ash is a Mormon apologist who has writ ten two thoughtful books and a number of insightful articles ex ploring a wide range of controversial issues within Mormonism. His recent book Shaken Faith Syndrome: Strengthening One’s Testimony in the Face of Criticism and Doubt is an outstanding apologetic resource for individuals searching for faith-promoting answers that directly confront anti-Mormon allegations and criticisms. Ash does an excellent job in both succinctly explain ing many of the criticisms leveled against The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and articulating compelling answers to these criticisms.

The Dragon Takes Flight: China's Journey Toward Building Its C-919 Large Passenger Aircraft And Its Impact On The Us And Boeing, Derek Adam Levine
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Despite the enormous risk associated with the development of a large indigenous airliner, China after a failed attempt in the mid-1980s, since 2003 has decided once again to embark on a journey toward the development of a 190 seat commercial airliner. Nations are typically interested in the development of indigenous airliners because of the potential spillover effects that years of research and development have on the economy and the military. Equally important is that China no longer wants to relinquish its large commercial airplane market to foreign companies such as Boeing and Airbus with their market expected to constitute nearly …
