If There's No "Fat Lady," When Is The Opera Over? An Exploration Of Changing Physical Image Standards In Present-Day Opera, Emily L. Stephenson Jan 2012

If There's No "Fat Lady," When Is The Opera Over? An Exploration Of Changing Physical Image Standards In Present-Day Opera, Emily L. Stephenson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Though present-day American society generally assumes opera is one of the few remaining entertainment fields where talent matters more than physical appearance, as the 2004 firing of Deborah Voigt demonstrates, present-day opera singers are increasingly being held to stricter image standards. In 2004, Covent Garden dismissed Voigt from their production of Ariadne auf Naxos, in which Voigt was supposed to reprise her critically acclaimed interpretation of the title role. According to Voigt, Covent Garden's casting director Peter Katona felt that she was too large to fit into the black dress the new production required of the character. Voigt's removal …

Journeying To The God Who Is Here: John Baillie's Theology Of Revelation In The Context Of His Life And Thought, Jessica Edwards Maddox Jan 2012

Journeying To The God Who Is Here: John Baillie's Theology Of Revelation In The Context Of His Life And Thought, Jessica Edwards Maddox

CTS PhD Doctoral Dissertations

Scottish Presbyterian theologian John Baillie (1886-1960) was a significant theologian and scholar who thoughtfully took up throughout his career the questions of how and why we know God. This dissertation shows that Baillie’s unique contribution to the theology of revelation in the idea of the mediated immediacy of God’s presence plays a formative role in the rest of his theology and is valuable for a Reformed theological engagement of twenty-first century theology. Throughout his career Baillie made several offerings relevant to this area of study, most notably Our Knowledge of God (1939), which has been considered Baillie’s most original work. …

"A Classless Society?": The Pneumatology Of E. Stanley Jones In Conversation With Mortimer Arias' Theology Of The Kingdom Of God, Angel Santiago-Vendrell

The Asbury Journal

This lecture addresses the pneumatology of E. Stanley Jones in

conversation with Mortimer Arias' theology of the kingdom of God. Jones was an advocate of what is known today in Latin America as mission integral. Integral mission seeks to restore every dimension of human life by requiring from Christians to be completely involved in the historical moment by the concrete demonstration of the power of the gospel in everyday life. Later, this illlderstanding of mission was used in Bolivia to propagate the gospel illldera brutal right-wing military regime by Bishop Mortimer Allas. Therefore, the kingdom of God as used …

Sensing The Spirit: Wesley's Empiricism And His Use Of The Language Of Spiritual Sensation, James E. Pedlar Jan 2012

Sensing The Spirit: Wesley's Empiricism And His Use Of The Language Of Spiritual Sensation, James E. Pedlar

The Asbury Journal

This paper examines the relationship betweenJohn Wesley's empiricism and his use of the language of "spiritual sensation." Through a close reading of Wesley's own espousal of empiricism, as well as his use of the language of the spiritual senses, it will be argued that Wesley, while committed to empiricism as a natural epistemology, views the experience of the Spirit as something which is known intuitively. H is references to the spiritual senses are therefore best understood as an analogy for this intuitively known experience of the Spirit. While Wesley's discussions of spiritual sensation are not simply an extension of his …

"A Good Moral Disposition From The Aesthetic Appreciation Of Nature": The Importance Of The Picturesque Landscape In Jane Austen's Novels And Elizabeth Bennet As The Ideal Heroine, Nora Casey Jan 2012

"A Good Moral Disposition From The Aesthetic Appreciation Of Nature": The Importance Of The Picturesque Landscape In Jane Austen's Novels And Elizabeth Bennet As The Ideal Heroine, Nora Casey

Senior Theses

Jane Austen's novels examine many aspects of society and culture in eighteenth century England. She uses wit and her own knowledge to explore the expectations of society from this time. The aesthetics of the picturesque, a movement in art and landscape design during her lifetime, is a central theme throughout many of her novels. Her love for the picturesque clearly shows through, as what seems to be the ideal Austen heroine can best be associated with the picturesque. In The Language of Jane Austen: A Study of Some Aspects of her Vocabulary Myra Stokes says, “The important place held by …

The Red Revolution From The Perspective Of Visual Cultural Studies: A New Chapter In Art, Commerce And Corporate Social Responsibility, Caroline Karanja Jan 2012

The Red Revolution From The Perspective Of Visual Cultural Studies: A New Chapter In Art, Commerce And Corporate Social Responsibility, Caroline Karanja

American Studies Honors Projects

This honors project is a critical examination of Project RED, a corporate campaign designed to heighten the appeal of a set of consumer products to a transnational youth demographic by associating these products with the eradication of HIV/AIDS in Africa. The project seeks to understand Project RED in the context of visual cultural studies in the tradition of the Birmingham School, and also of critical work on the use of culture as a tool for corporate growth. The project rests on a close reading of visual texts, including a HBO documentary and a set of advertisements, that constitute Project RED.

Values And Beliefs: A Pragmatist Critique Of Moral Nihilism, J.P. Weismuller Jan 2012

Values And Beliefs: A Pragmatist Critique Of Moral Nihilism, J.P. Weismuller

Philosophy Honors Projects

Moral nihilism maintains that value judgments cannot be justified. In this paper I argue against two prominent nihilistic theories: error theory and expressivism. First I present a meta-valuation thesis, which holds that it would be more valuable if at least some value judgments were justified. Second I argue for a value-justification thesis, which holds that the greater value of value-justifying theories warrants a rejection of nihilistic theories. This latter thesis requires a pragmatist premise: justified beliefs are the most valuable of possible beliefs. With this premise and a critique of meta-ethical theory choice, I argue that meta-ethical justification proceeds …

The Concrete Modernism Of Oscar Niemeyer And The Paulistano Impulse Toward Cannibalized Urban Design And Performative Identity, Doris Zhao Jan 2012

The Concrete Modernism Of Oscar Niemeyer And The Paulistano Impulse Toward Cannibalized Urban Design And Performative Identity, Doris Zhao

History Honors Projects

As introduced by the cultural elite of São Paulo, Brazil in 1922, the aesthetics of modernism drove Oscar Niemeyer and Roberto Burle Marx's designs of urban architectural projects in the mid-twentieth century. These architectural performances of a modern paulistano identity, evidenced in Parque Ibirapuera, provide insight into the challenges and ruptures of identify formation and memory for the residents of São Paulo. Using antropofagia as a lens of analysis, the call to cultural cannibalism complicates the processes of self-representation within the city. Historically, paulistanos believed themselves to be the socio-economic and cultural pioneers of the Brazilian nation but tracing the …
