The Self In Multiple: The Lithographic Portraits Of L'Artiste (1832-34), Sean Delouche Jan 2012

The Self In Multiple: The Lithographic Portraits Of L'Artiste (1832-34), Sean Delouche

Mid-America College Art Association Conference 2012 Digital Publications

Portraits, especially those outside the medium of oil-on-canvas, have been a neglected and often disparaged subject in nineteenth-century French art history, despite their overwhelming prevalence during the time period. This paper contributes to our understanding of the modern manifestation of the portrait by examining a suite of lithographic portraits of cultural celebrities that appeared in the newly established art journal L’Artiste during the July Monarchy (1830-1848), the constitutional regime long associated with both the social and political rise of the bourgeoisie as well as the development of an extensive commercial and celebrity culture. Executed in the sketchy and lively medium …

A Nowhere Between Two Somewheres: The Church Street South Project And Urban Renewal In New Haven, Emily Dominski Jan 2012

A Nowhere Between Two Somewheres: The Church Street South Project And Urban Renewal In New Haven, Emily Dominski

Kaplan Senior Essay Prize for Use of Library Special Collections

“It is altogether too easy to forget the New Haven of a decade ago” New Haven’s Mayor Richard C. Lee began as he addressed the members of his Citizens Action Commission in 1965. “Neither our eyes, nor our memories are any longer jolted by the vision of the old produce market that had operated near the Railroad Station for more than half a century. The old market was a tangle of stress, often so congested that normal business was impossible. Most business was conducted from the tailgates of trucks. This was a truck market in every sense of the word, …

His Name Is Not Tadzio, Or Death In Marseilles: Anna Seghers’S Transit, Eckhard Rolz Jan 2012

His Name Is Not Tadzio, Or Death In Marseilles: Anna Seghers’S Transit, Eckhard Rolz

School of American and Global Studies Faculty Publications with a Focus on Modern Languages and Global Studies

Anna Seghers’s novel Transit was widely praised by critics, especially in the former German Democratic Republic. Heinrich Böll even regards it as the most beautiful novel Anna Seghers ever wrote. A close analysis of the text, however, reveals many lose ends, one-dimensional characters, stereotypical descriptions of people, and subjects who act irrationally and strange. It is a platform for preaching her political views intermixed with Greek Mythology and Christian imagery. In addition, she borrows heavily from Thomas Mann’s Death in Venice, but fails to reach the sophistication Mann’s novel exhibits.

“La Modernización Y Sus Fantasmas: Violencia, Exceso Y Ritual En ‘La Gata De Mi Madre’ De Carlos Fuentes, Jose J. Alvarez

School of American and Global Studies Faculty Publications with a Focus on Modern Languages and Global Studies

Manipulating Fate: Medical Innovations, Ethical Implications, Theatrical Illuminations, Karen H. Rothenberg, Lynn W. Bush Jan 2012

Manipulating Fate: Medical Innovations, Ethical Implications, Theatrical Illuminations, Karen H. Rothenberg, Lynn W. Bush

Faculty Scholarship

Transformative innovations in medicine and their ethical complexities create frequent confusion and misinterpretation that color the imagination. Placed in historical context, theatre provides a framework to reflect upon how the ethical, legal, and social implications of emerging technologies evolve over time and how attempts to control fate through medical science have shaped -- and been shaped by -- personal and professional relationships. The drama of these human interactions is powerful and has the potential to generate fear, create hope, transform identity, and inspire empathy -- a vivid source to observe the complex implications of translating research into clinical practice through …

The After Effects Of Colonialism In The Postmodern Era: Competing Narratives And Celebrating The Local In Michael Ondaatje's Anil's Ghost, Priyanthan A. Pillainayagam Jan 2012

The After Effects Of Colonialism In The Postmodern Era: Competing Narratives And Celebrating The Local In Michael Ondaatje's Anil's Ghost, Priyanthan A. Pillainayagam

ETD Archive

Through the utilization of Jean-Francois Lyotard's views on the Postmodern condition, this paper highlights the failure of metanarratives to accurately convince, as well as convey information and understanding in a postmodern society. This is due in part to what Lyotard believes is an increasing skepticism towards the grand totalizing nature of metanarratives and their reliance on some form of universal truth. In order to reverse the overarching effect of the metanarrative, its all-encompassing nature, and its power to legitimize illegitimate versions of institutionalized truths one must focus on what Lyotard describes as "petit recits" or "little stories". This theoretical framework …

Reverse Orientalism: Laila Halaby's Once In A Promised Land, Amanda Lloyd Jan 2012

Reverse Orientalism: Laila Halaby's Once In A Promised Land, Amanda Lloyd

ETD Archive

Laila Halaby's Once in a Promised Land (2007) offers instructive insight into the struggles facing Arab Americans in post 9/11 America. Specifically, Halaby inverts the Western gaze upon the Arab world in doing so, she represents an America that is conspiratorial and inundated with religious zealotry. After 9/11, Halaby's American characters become increasingly intolerant and distrustful of Arabs and Islamic cultures. Halaby, then, portrays intolerant and xenophobic American characters overwrought with suspicion and paranoia and reveals a post 9/11 America that is rife with anti-Arab racism. Halaby also suggests that the pervasive American perception of a world distinctly divided between …

William Vincent Wallace Bicentenary Recitals Wexford Festival Opera, Oct.-Nov. 2012. These unique recitals of drawing-room music and opera excerpts celebrate the bicentenary of the birth of Irish composer, William Vincent Wallace (1812–1865) and focus particularly on his unknown songs and piano music. Wallace was one of the
most extraordinary musical personalities of
the nineteenth century – not only a composer, but a virtuoso on two instruments (piano and violin) and a global traveller. He visited parts of the world that no other Irish musician had set foot in and widened his sphere of influence by establishing a music school in …

Reformed Political Theory In The American Founding (Chapter Two Of Roger Sherman And The Creation Of The American Republic), Mark David Hall Jan 2012

Reformed Political Theory In The American Founding (Chapter Two Of Roger Sherman And The Creation Of The American Republic), Mark David Hall

Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics

This chapter provides an overview of the Calvinist world into which Sherman was born and raised. It offers an introduction to Reformed political theory, and sketches its transmission from Europe to America. It considers and rejects the possibility that the founders were significantly influenced by a secularized Lockean liberalism. It concludes by demonstrating, contrary to assertions by many scholars, that Sherman was a serious Calvinist.

Unfinished Agenda, Mildred Emory Persinger Jan 2012

Unfinished Agenda, Mildred Emory Persinger

Mildred E. Persinger Papers

(excerpt) Why am I still working in the campaigns for civil rights and human rights after seventy years? The question has never come up—until now. Yet it is to be expected. Even as a child I was upset by hearing disparaging remarks about cherished black friends. In college I was stunned to learn that others had raised questions about the propriety of my invitation to a young Japanese student to spend the weekend with me. Later I was ashamed and worried for her that in Virginia she might have been rejected because she was not white enough.

Systemic Functional Linguistic Discourse Features In The Personal Essay, Anna Jones Rollins Jan 2012

Systemic Functional Linguistic Discourse Features In The Personal Essay, Anna Jones Rollins

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The purpose of this thesis is to look at published and student-produced creative writing, more specifically, personal essays, through the lens of discourse analysis theories in Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). From the analysis of these personal essays, this thesis provides pedagogical insight concerning the linguistic features that are prevalent in published and student personal essays. Although research has been conducted looking at academic student writing through the lens of SFL, little research has been conducted looking specifically at the elements that make up pieces of creative writing. In fact, Blythe and Sweet (2008), with over seventy years of experience teaching …

Mothers At Work: Reconstruction And Deconstruction Of Patriarchy In Gone With The Wind, Catherine Willa Staley Jan 2012

Mothers At Work: Reconstruction And Deconstruction Of Patriarchy In Gone With The Wind, Catherine Willa Staley

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

In this thesis, I explore the performances of motherhood in Margaret Mitchell’s Gone with the Wind and how those performances conflict with culturally constructed expectations of that role. An analysis of Scarlett O’Hara and Melanie Wilkes, and how each woman compares to the South’s model for motherhood, reveals implications that extend beyond the novel’s Civil War setting to reveal the ongoing negotiation of modern readers still living within patriarchal conceptions of mothering. In Chapter 1, I outline the novel’s spectrum of motherhood, which is composed of characters who nurture and manage others. Each individual on that spectrum contributes to or …
