Why There Is No Duty To Die, Gary W. Levvis, Margaret M. Levvis
Why There Is No Duty To Die, Gary W. Levvis, Margaret M. Levvis
Torrington Articles
John Hardwig argues that patients have a duty to end their lives when their continued existence imposes serious hardship on their caregivers. Hardwig has deflected many critics’ objections concerning the practical implications of his position. Our goal is to demonstrate the self-contradictory nature of the duty-to-die thesis. Once we eliminate the vagueness (over the essential conditions subtending a presumed duty to die) and the ambiguity (implicit in Hardwig’s use of the term “duty”), we find that the essential conditions for such a duty cannot be simultaneously satisfied. The problem is that the very process by which the duty to die …

Review Of Raymond Bechard's 'The Berlin Turnpike: A True Story Of Human Trafficking In America', Gary W. Levvis
Torrington Articles
This is a negative appraisal of Raymond Bechard's "The Berlin Turnpike" on the basis of its unbalanced treatment of the the phenomenon of trafficking within Connecticut and the United States. The book omits any consideration of victim service providers and fails in its goal to let victims speak for themselves. The organization, scholarship and even the methods by which the book has been marketed are called into question.
A Dull Enigma: Historians' Analysis Of Gilbert And Sullivan's Impact On The Development Of The American Musical, Andrew Vorder Bruegge
A Dull Enigma: Historians' Analysis Of Gilbert And Sullivan's Impact On The Development Of The American Musical, Andrew Vorder Bruegge
College of Visual and Performing Arts Faculty Publications
Historians of musical theatre have been ambivalent when assessing the historical significance of Gilbert and Sullivan upon the development of the American musical. Historical narratives typically jump from The Black Crook to Friml, with only passing reference to G&S (and Offenbach, and Strauss). Gilbert and Sullivan (encouraged by D’Oyly Carte), however, anticipated not only most of the formal elements, but also many of the creative/production processes of the American musical genre. The shows that we associate with the “Golden Era” of the American musical theatre contain many components that G&S devised three score years earlier. Historians should acknowledge the importance …
More Than Just Nonsense Verse?: The Language Of Dr. Seuss And Children's Literacy, Nicole Hewes
More Than Just Nonsense Verse?: The Language Of Dr. Seuss And Children's Literacy, Nicole Hewes
Senior Scholar Papers
In this Senior Scholars project I wanted to demonstrate that Dr. Seuss books are much more than just nonsense verse. For the first part of my project, I familiarized myself with all of his texts and scrutinized his use of language in a textual analysis. By scrutinizing Geisel’s use of language and wordplay, I hoped to isolate some characteristics that make a Seuss book different from other types of stories and texts. The second part of my project was an empirical study that tested what influence reading a real Seuss text versus a fake Seuss text has on students’ performance …

Visions Of Juliana: A Portuguese Woman At The Court Of The Mughals, Taymiya R. Zaman
Visions Of Juliana: A Portuguese Woman At The Court Of The Mughals, Taymiya R. Zaman
History
This article discusses Juliana Dias da Costa (d. 1734), an influential Portuguese woman at the court of the Mughal king Bahadur Shah I (d. 1712). Through an analysis of sources that traverse three centuries and several languages, this article demonstrates how visions of Juliana were shaped by the political aspirations of those writing about her. To Jesuits, Juliana was a proxy for their mission in India, and to the Portuguese, she was one of their own, strategically placed at court to serve their interests. And for her impoverished descendants in British India, she was emblematic of times when they held …

A Prospective Study Of Religiousness And Psychological Distress Among Female Survivors Of Hurricanes Katrina And Rita, C. S. Chan, J. E. Rhodes, John E. Perez
A Prospective Study Of Religiousness And Psychological Distress Among Female Survivors Of Hurricanes Katrina And Rita, C. S. Chan, J. E. Rhodes, John E. Perez
Psychology
This prospective study examined the pathways by which religious involvement affected the postdisaster psychological functioning of women who survived Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The participants were 386 low-income, predominantly Black, single mothers. The women were enrolled in the study before the hurricane, providing a rare opportunity to document changes in mental health from before to after the storm, and to assess the protective role of religious involvement over time. Results of structural equation modeling indicated that, controlling for level of exposure to the hurricanes, pre-disaster physical health, age, and number of children, predisaster religiousness predicted higher levels of post-disaster (1) …

Non-Heterosexual Bi-National Families: Resilient Victims Of Sexual Prejudice And Discriminatory Immigration Policies, Daniela Domínguez, Bernadette H. Solórzano, Ezequiel Peña
Psychology
An unprecedented number of American citizens are facing the challenge of being in a nonheterosexual bi-national relationship. Although immigration laws are based on the principle of family unification, under current federal law lesbian, gay and bisexual Americans cannot sponsor their same-sex foreign national partners for residency in the United States. Consequently, an estimated 36,000 couples face the threat of family separation because immigration’s narrow definition of “family” excludes same-sex bi-national couples and their children. Despite the fact that family research indicates that long periods of separation have harmful effects on the family, immigration law continues to deny bi-national families the …

Kickin' Sand and Tellin' Lies: The Play
This document is the script of the two-act play, Kickin’ Sand and Tellin’ Lies, by Jackson B. Miller and Christopher Forrer. The Linfield College Theatre Program presented the world premieres of the play in November 2012 in McMinnville, Oregon and in Pacific City, Oregon. The play was created as part of the Launching through the Surf: The Dory Fleet of Pacific City project, which focuses on the historical and contemporary role of dory fishers and dories in the life of the coastal village of Pacific City, Oregon. Inspired by stories from the project, Kickin’ Sand and Tellin’ Lies is a …

The Power Of Music: Song Serves As An Effective Recall Cue In Children, Tanisha Dews
The Power Of Music: Song Serves As An Effective Recall Cue In Children, Tanisha Dews
McCabe Thesis Collection
Song, in some cases, can facilitate learning and recall. The experiments in this thesis demonstrate that information is better recalled when it is heard as a song rather than as speech or through lecture. This study further proves that when a combination of song and speech are taught to children, the retrieval of information is even greater. When the group of the second condition was tested, they were more successful in recalling the information learned. This study also recognizes that song can infuse difficulty due to music's rich structure and makeup of rhythm, tempo, and stress patterns. The overall paper …
Rc-Maps: Bridging The Comprehension Gap In Eap Reading, Angela Meyer Sterzik, Carol Fraser
Rc-Maps: Bridging The Comprehension Gap In Eap Reading, Angela Meyer Sterzik, Carol Fraser
Faculty & Staff Publications - ELI
In academic environments, reading is assigned not simply to transmit information; students are required to take the information, and based on the task set by the instructor, assess, analyze, and critique it on the basis of personal experiences, prior knowledge, and other readings (Grabe, 2009). Thus text-based comprehension (Kintsch, 1998) alone is not sufficient for academic success. Top-down processing is also required; this involves applying prior knowledge to define purpose(s), to make and verify hypotheses, and to infer and question content (Macaro & Erler, 2008; Urquhart & Weir, 1991). Although research has given teachers direction regarding the approach to use …

500 Year Documentation, Francis T. Marchese, Phd, Maninder Pal Kaur Shergill
Wilson Center for Social Entrepreneurship
Museum visitors today can regularly view 500 year old art by Renaissance masters. Will visitors to museums 500 years in the future be able to see the work of digital artists from the early 21st century? This paper considers the real problem of conserving interactive digital artwork for museum installation in the far distant future by exploring the requirements for creating documentation that will support an artwork's adaptation to future technology. In effect, this documentation must survive as long as the artwork itself -- effectively, in perpetuity. A proposal is made for the use of software engineering methodologies as solutions …

Orts: The George MacDonald Society Newsletter
Orts will soon join North Wind’s Online Digital Archive, thanks to the ongoing efforts of John Pennington, who teaches at Saint Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin. Dr. Pennington, one of the editors of North Wind: A Journal of George MacDonald Studies, previously oversaw the digitization of the academic journal. Jaena Manson, an editorial intern at the journal, is assisting in the process, a considerable task given that the archive will encompass the newsletter’s entire history, from the first issue published over thirty years ago in 1981 to the present edition. As with North Wind, the Orts archive will be …
Seven Faces Of Sin: A Study Guide To Biblical Models For How Evil Originates And How It Can Be Overcome, Scott Gambrill Sinclair
Seven Faces Of Sin: A Study Guide To Biblical Models For How Evil Originates And How It Can Be Overcome, Scott Gambrill Sinclair
Faculty Authored Books and Book Contributions
This book began as a series of classes that I gave to the monks at New Camaldoli Hermitage, Big Sur, California. The monks encouraged me to publish the material. Later when I was teaching a course on the New Testament at the School for Deacons in Berkeley, I remarked that every preacher should preach on "sin" at least twice a year. My students seemed surprised and intrigued and asked me to explain. I attempted to do so briefly, but the explanation was not adequate. Later another member of the faculty heard that I thought that deacons should at least occasionally …

Preface and Introduction to Gabriel's Conspiracy: A Documentary History by Philip J. Schwarz. Includes a six page Chronology (1776-1800) of the documented events of Gabriel Prosser's life, with emphasis on the slave rebellion of 1800.
From the Introduction, "Documents concerning the important 1800 plot of enslaved Virginians to rebel against slavery have appeared in such publications as the Calendar of Virginia State Papers, Michael Mullin's American Negro Slavery: A Documentary History, and as part of a Library of Virginia exhibit in 2000. But there has never been a publication devoted solely to the many documents associated with the events of …
