Creative Reception In Urban Space, Or The Art Of Listening, Benjamin Tausig

Journal of Urban Culture Research

On January 15, 2011, a group of twenty Bangkok residents embarked on a guided soundwalk through parts of their city.The walk was designed as both instructional and experimental in ways that facilitated new and creative engagements between listener and place. In the middle of the walk, following a brief but serious medical emergency, it also became an exercise in responsive action, and offered the group an opportunity to reflect on the fundamental role of unpredictability in sensory experience. This article describes the planning strategies that went into developing the soundwalk, and summarizes the challenges and successes of the event as …

Effects Of Study Activities On Academic Achievement For University Students In Thailand, John Brian Power

In this paper the influence of study activities on academic achievement at university level in Thailand is examined. Furthermore, the extent to which multitasking and the use of technology have now become determining factors in student study behavior is explored. The study concentrated on a group of 318 students (131 males and 187 females) in their final year at Mahidol University International College (MUIC) in Thailand. Results of this research demonstrate that of the 57 factors assessed, 51 showed no correlation between the activities that students engage in while studying and academic achievement, while 6 factors showed a correlation (Criteria: …

Stuck between an impossible life and an inadmissible death and condemned to suffer from their empty existence, the wretched protagonists in Samuel Beckett's theatrical work desperately seek an escape in a symbolic and metaphorical body and space: a foetus in the uterus. Aroused by the nostalgia for mother, they constantly strive to create or live in the conditions analogous to those in the womb: the world absent of excitements, dark, and protective where their idle bodies can curl up serenely in the intermediary state of non-life and non-death until the desired end actually comes.

Exploring Partnerships With Common Roots: Two New Ways Of Combining Classical Dance Traditions In Mainland Southeast Asian Performances, Pornrat Damrhung

This article explores two different attempts to make partnerships for the today's stage with teams of classically-trained Southeast Asian dancers in the last three years. Working in different conditions and toward different ends, the Cambodian and Thai dancers discussed in this paper combined their classical artistic training and interests into performances differently directed toward today's diverse dance audiences. This paper presents the variation in the two short high vowels /i/ and /u/ occurring in live syllables ending with final nasal consonants (CVN) in two Southwestern Tai (SWT) dialects: Lue and Khün, respectively spoken in the villages of Nong Bua and Nong Muang in Pa Kha Subdistrict, Tha Wang Pha District, in Nan Province. The data were collected from Lue and Khün language resource persons (LRPs) in three age groups, an elderly group (60 years old and above), a middle-aged group (35-50 years old), and a young group (15-25 years old), with five LRPs in each age group. One might estimate that in Central Thailand, especially in Ayutthaya, there would not be rituals in the process of growing rice anymore because Ayutthaya is located near Bangkok and modernization may have effected the persistence of the traditional culture. Data from my fieldwork, however, indicates that some parts of Ayutthaya such as at Don Pho village, Tambon Chaina, Amphoe Sena still retain rituals concerning rice. This paper explores and explains the persistence of and changes in the ritual of calling the khwan of the Rice Goddess. Sacred Power Transmission And The Network Of Phu Thai Folk Healers In Tambon Nonyang, Nongsung District, Mukdahan Province, Surachai Chinnabutr

The purpose of this paper is to study the ways the sacred power of "Moh Yao," Phu Thai folk healers, are transmitted and to study the network formation between the Yao healers and their followers through ritual in Tambon Nonyang, Nongsung District, Mukdahan Province, Thailand. The research results reveal two methods of how the "Yao" healers inherit their sacred power: first, through the maternal descent line, and second, through a certain ritual called "Yao Khum Phi Ok"/เหยาคุมผีออก, which must be performed annually for three consecutive years in order to obtain and sustain the sacred healing power. This paper studies the symbolism of the objects and behaviors in the "Chaomae Song Nang" ritual held in Mueang District, Mukdahan Province, so as to elucidate the meaning of the symbols in relation to the legend of the Chaomae Song Nang as the ancestors of the Mukdahan people. Chaomae Song Nang are the spirits of the daughters of the former ruler of Khanthaburi in Laos. Together with their followers, they are the subject of a ritual held annually in Mukdahan City. This paper aims to study the dynamics of power relations in the "Chao Luang Kham Daeng"/เจ้าหลวงคำแดง spirit cult of the Tai Yuan people in Chiang Mai and Phayao provinces. In the past, the spirit cult was followed by the rulers of Chiang Mai city. Later on and nowadays, it has been downgraded to be the responsibility of the district level. Therefore, it is interesting to investigate the arrangement of the spirit cult in contemporary Lanna context. This paper aims to identify the construction of the sacredness of the Mekong River through folk narratives created by the communities of Tibet, China, Burma, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, located along the banks of the Mekong River. A "Desperate Vitality": Tableaux Vivants In The Work Of Pasolini And Ontani (1963–1974), Anna Mecugni

This essay focuses on four key works by Pier Paolo Pasolini (1922-75) and Luigi Ontani (b. 1943) that involve tableaux vivants after sixteenth- and seventeenth-century paintings held in Italian churches and museums: Pasolini’s short film La ricotta (1963), and Ontani’s video Favola impropriata (1970-71) and two photographic works – La caduta dei ciechi d’après Brueghel and San Sebastiano nel bosco di Calvenzano (d’après Guido Reni) – also from circa 1970. In the 1960s and 1970s, several other Italian filmmakers and artists referenced past art in their work. Indeed, quotations and allusions to past art are characteristic of an idiosyncratic strain …

In this dissertation I argue not only that queer ecology is a legitimate and important next step for ecocritics and queer theorists but also that its literary application does a great amount of good in exploring and dismantling the natural/unnatural binary and exposing the ecological impact of the choices humans make everyday. I take as my method a combination of queer and environmental theory and literary criticism, as well as the foundational queer ecocritical works and include important historical and political perspectives influencing the emergence of the environmental and gay and lesbian movements. It is often said the college football in the South is a religion. While it may be hyperbole to equate college football with religion, a visit to a southern campus on game day affirms that football is an important aspect of southern society. How did this happen? In other words, how did college football in the South become big-time? This dissertation seeks to answer that question.
