This paper focuses upon the relationship between the German Egyptologist Jan Assmann and the German-Jewish late modern literary critic Walter Benjamin as regards the movement from canons to messianic forces. It therefore traces the evolution in Assmann’s thought from issues surrounding the processes of canonization to his development of a form of ‘weak thought’ in relation to religious violence before then turning to Benjamin’s portrayal of a ‘weak messianic force’ moving through history which is only conceivable in close proximity to a scriptural legacy and a divine (or ‘pure’) violence, as he saw it. Cautiverio y convivencia en la edad de Cervantes [Captivity and Coexistence in the Age of Cervantes] explores Spanish narratives of coexistence in Muslim and Native American lands, through the lens of captivity in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Far from engaging with the violence or trauma of confinement, the author studies the cognitive experience that results from abrupt immersion in a foreign culture, which leads to a revision of homogeneous and stereotypical perceptions of cultural, religious and ethnic differences, and ultimately undermines the perception of one’s own society as a stable world. This thesis examines Nazi propaganda’s overall effectiveness during Adolf Hitler’s rise to power in the 1930s through the end of World War II in 1945. Historians have had mixed opinions of the overall potency of the propaganda. The questions in consideration are why Nazi propaganda received so much support from the Nazi leadership if it didn’t work and whether or not it was a primary reason Germany continued to resist until the end of the war.
