Lifestyles Of The Not So Rich And Famous: Ideological Shifts In Popular Culture, Reagan-Era Sitcoms And Portrayals Of The Working Class, April Janise Raine

McNair Scholars Research Journal

My research indentifies, through examination of popular culture, a major shift in meanings and values surrounding the working class at a vital time in US history: the Reagan years. During the Reagan Era, the working class was weakened economically, politically and ideologically. I explore three salient themes evidenced throughout the family-centered sitcoms analyzed in my research: Minimization of Working-Class jobs, Working Class Selfdeprecation and Defeat, and the Stigmatization of aid/assistance. These themes emerged from an inductive analysis of family based sitcoms (airing 1980-1988) which encompassed main characters who were both representatives of the corporate elite and had direct interactions with …

This year the University Center for the Humanities focuses a lens on the contact zones between culture and power to understand the tensions, collaborations, accommodations and conversions that accompany sustained cross-cultural encounters. It considers the intersections of ethnicity, language, religion, politics, science and culture and the innovative and creative human products of that interaction. The lecture series is designed to contest stereotypes of difference and expand the understanding of complex social dynamics.

I chose two hypotheses to form a survey. The first hypothesis is that persons are reached by the style of building, existing relationships, or advertising. The second hypothesis is that persons maintain their membership based on the content of preaching, the quality of teaching programs, or fellowship.

I employed the Mann-Whitney Statistical Test to analyze the data.

The data revealed that good preaching, good worship, and good fellowship make a growing church. The data results also show the significance of the Pastor and revealed that age-graded Bible study groups are still valid in reaching and retaining members.

Helping The Parents Of Middle School Students Communicate Biblical Truths Of Sexuality At The First Baptist Church Of Lenoir, North Carolina, Thomas Russell Hinton

An educational program was developed to discover the role of the church in promoting healthy parent/child communication about sexuality. Believing scripture affirms sexuality as a blessing from God, parents and middle school youth were recruited and led through the study. Surveys measured attitudes, opinions, and understanding of biblical knowledge, anatomy, and communication levels. After the program the families were given two months to observe parent/child communication. Final surveys indicated that the church can play an active role in promoting parent child communication about sexuality, and participants reflected a positive outcome by recommending the continuation of this program as a part …

Variation And Change In Peruvian Spanish Word Order: Language Contact And Dialect Contact In Lima, Carol A. Klee, Daniel G. Tight, Rocio Caravedo

International Journal of the Linguistic Association of the Southwest

Previous studies have revealed that the direct object/verb (OV) word order typical of Quechua and Aymara is also prevalent in Andean Spanish. The current study examines the frequency of such structures in Lima, Peru, where massive migration over the past 60 years has brought speakers of Andean indigenous languages and rural Andean Spanish into close contact with speakers of limeño Spanish. Goldvarb analysis of data from 34 participants (seven first-generation migrants, six 1.5-generation migrants, 10 second-generation migrants, and 11 native limeños) indicates that the pragmatic functions that motivated OV order among the participants include those found in noncontact varieties of …

Dialects And Borders: Face-To-Face And Back-To-Back In Latin American Spanish, John M. Lipski

International Journal of the Linguistic Association of the Southwest

This essay explores a relatively underrepresented facet of Latin American Spanish, namely dialect contact along national borders. It is well known that Spanish American dialect zones rarely coincide with national boundaries, but also that prevailing dialectal traits often evoke nationalistic sentiments. The extent to which these tendencies interact is explored through a series of vignettes involving speech communities along the borders between nations whose principal (e.g. capital city) dialect traits differ substantially. Among the proposed factors that influence linguistic behavior in border communities are physical and political ease of border crossing, inter-nation economic imbalances, proximity of major urban areas, trans-border …

To liberate: to set free, as from imprisonment or bondage. When the committee sat down to develop a theme for the 10th annual Humanities Symposium, a theme that coincided with the “Belmont Questions” theme of Wealth & Poverty, we immediately began to talk about voice, about the ways in which the Humanities gives voice to a variety of experiences. It didn’t take us long to agree that the Symposium’s theme would be “Liberating Voices,” for the Humanities both liberates people’s voices and sees the sharing of those voices as liberating.
