My Child And My Life: Sacrificial Obligation And Chaucer, Gary Scott Montano Jan 2011

My Child And My Life: Sacrificial Obligation And Chaucer, Gary Scott Montano

English Dissertations - Archive

Medieval literature demonstrates that Christians of that era took their Bible seriously, particularly the Old Testament account of Abraham's sacrifice of Isaac. For them, the story was both fascinating and perplexing. Not only was Abraham one of the most revered figures, but he was also one of the most frustrating. He was admired for his ability to obey God's directive to sacrifice Isaac, but because he does so without displaying an ounce of emotion, that admiration is often coupled with irritation. How could a father as loving as Abraham remain expressionless and emotionless as he raised the knife to kill …

Korean American Matters And Identity In Korean American Novels, Seung-Won Kim Jan 2011

Korean American Matters And Identity In Korean American Novels, Seung-Won Kim

English Dissertations - Archive

My dissertation focuses on the intersection between the maturation of young Korean American protagonists in fiction and the writers' own growing-up of ethnic identity as Korean descendants. I analyze nine Korean American novels written by Sook Nyul Choi, An Na, and Linda Sue Park. I approach my selected texts in two different ways. First, I explore the different exigencies of their writing projects by investigating their biographical backgrounds. Second, I examine how these authors differently represent Korean American matters such as history, community, and culture in order to create stories of Korean or Korean American protagonists' coming-of-age through their writing …

No Longer Estranged: Women, Science, Science Fiction, Christy Tidwell Jan 2011

No Longer Estranged: Women, Science, Science Fiction, Christy Tidwell

English Dissertations - Archive

Feminist science fiction (SF) and feminist science studies share common concerns--the gendered perception of science and women's place in the sciences among them--but the two fields are rarely considered together. This failure to connect the two fields may be explained in part by the ongoing divide between the sciences and the humanities; it may be further exacerbated by the ghettoization of SF within literary studies. I gather together feminist SF texts, literary theories of feminist SF, and feminist science studies in order to add to the scholarship of each individual field as well as make a case for the value …

God Is Dead... Now There Danceth A God In Me. Bringing Modernist Darkness To Light Through The Apollonian And Dionysian Dichotomy, Kendall Stephenson Jan 2011

God Is Dead... Now There Danceth A God In Me. Bringing Modernist Darkness To Light Through The Apollonian And Dionysian Dichotomy, Kendall Stephenson

English Theses - Archive

Friedrich Nietzsche's theory of the Apollonian and Dionysian dichotomy can be seen at work in the texts of canonical modernist writers such as Virginia Woolf, Hermann Hesse, Albert Camus, Rainer Maria Rilke, William B. Yeats and T.S. Eliot, and it is in the balance of these two Greek deities that modernist literary characters affirm life, thus reversing the typically negative interpretations of modernist literature. My aim is to show how the primordial, divergent elements of the Apollonian and Dionysian reveal themselves across the field of modernist literature and synthesize to create moments of truth, mental equilibrium, and life-affirmation amongst its …

One Foot In The Grave: The Zombie's Consumption Of American Film, Ronni M. Davis Jan 2011

One Foot In The Grave: The Zombie's Consumption Of American Film, Ronni M. Davis

English Theses - Archive

American film has chronicled the evolution of the zombie mythos for nearly eight decades. Originally constructed as a projection of the plight of the enslaved population of Haiti, the zombie as introduced to American film remains a symbol of societal anxieties. I argue that, to reflect the changing zeitgeist, the zombie shifts into three general forms. The Haitian Zombi is generally a passive creature subject to the will of its creator; it reveals desire to control people that either pose a threat or that have something that the creator covets and is otherwise unable to attain. The Extraterrestrial Zombie represents …

Resisting Commodification (With Friends!): Facebook And Consumer Culture, Wilton S. Wright Jan 2011

Resisting Commodification (With Friends!): Facebook And Consumer Culture, Wilton S. Wright

English Theses - Archive

Is participating in the Facebook phenomenon (or can it become) politically resistant - even revolutionary? Or are social networking websites merely another form of commodified capitalist consumerism? In this thesis, I investigate the commodified/commodifying aspects of Facebook, as well as its political potential. In order to establish a common understanding of the problems created by contemporary capitalism, in the first chapter I use Guy Debord's theory of the Society of the Spectacle to provide a framework for evaluating the incessant commodification of contemporary culture. I then examine previous attempts to overturn the capitalist system and discuss possible reasons for their …

Digitalism: Towards A Theory Of Digital Rhetoric And Composition, Jared Chambers Jan 2011

Digitalism: Towards A Theory Of Digital Rhetoric And Composition, Jared Chambers

English Theses - Archive

In this thesis, I argue that the text and the textual are inherently digital and, thus, have properties that are information theoretic in origin. From that premise, I use an interdisciplinary approach to construct a theory for the reading and deconstruction of digital works and their viewers, which I then use to form a method for the analysis, composition, and reading of texts "digitally."The first two chapters introduce the relation of digital philosophy and information theory to textual works, which leads into the third chapter's ontology of digital works and their audience. Chapters four introduces the power of simulacrum in …

Yahweh As Father: The Image In Ancient Israelite Context And Modern Appropriation, Joshua Wayne Lovelace Jan 2011

Yahweh As Father: The Image In Ancient Israelite Context And Modern Appropriation, Joshua Wayne Lovelace

MA in Religion Theses

The goal of this thesis was to appropriate the image of Yahweh as father for modern Christendom in light of feminist critiques of the image. The methods in accomplishing this task were as follows: defining feminism and feminist biblical interpretation, conveying the critiques of Rosemary Radford Ruether and Julia M. O'Brien who were scholarly dialogue partners, studying the social milieu of ancient Israel, using historical, literary, textual, and social criticism to exegete texts that mention Yahweh as father, comparing findings of exegesis with social milieu of ancient Israel, responding to critiques of Ruether and O'Brien, and lastly taking the findings …

There are many different issues this study examined to gain a better understanding of the complexities of the lives of women who are high school teachers while raising young children.

The Mass Appeal Of Shostakovich’S Seventh Symphony, Terry Klefstad Jan 2011

The Mass Appeal Of Shostakovich’S Seventh Symphony, Terry Klefstad

Belmont Humanities Symposium Journal

Throughout his life, Dmitri Shostakovich was surrounded by political controversy, and since his death, the ideological debate has continued. The story of his career as a Soviet composer, in and out of favor with the Communist government, and his music, stylistically eclectic and sometimes populist in nature, gives rise to political and often controversial questions: Should an artist submit to governmental policy? Can music express a political message? How do we respond to such music? Ever since the publication of Solomon Volkov’s Testimony in 1979, a book purported to be Shostakovich’s memoir, and its subsequent rebuttal by Laurel Fay in …

Women In Transition: Experiences Of Asian Women International Students On U.S. College Campuses, Siva Jeyabalasingam Jan 2011

Women In Transition: Experiences Of Asian Women International Students On U.S. College Campuses, Siva Jeyabalasingam

Department of Family Therapy Dissertations and Applied Clinical Projects

Often referred to as people in transition, international students usually arrive in the U.S. with a clear sense of their academic goals; however, they often have not considered what their lives will be like or how they may change in non-academic ways. In addition to the typical level of university-related stress, international students face additional problems and difficulties generated in part by the cultural differences between the U.S. and their own countries. This is particularly true for Asian students. Of several studies that have investigated the experiences of international students in the U.S., only a handful have examined Asian students' …

Teaching Activist Intelligence: Feminism, The Educational Experience And The Applied Women's Studies Department At Cgu, Tara Chaffee Robinson Jan 2011

Teaching Activist Intelligence: Feminism, The Educational Experience And The Applied Women's Studies Department At Cgu, Tara Chaffee Robinson

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The need to teach students how to be community activists becomes increasingly relevant as women's studies continues to evolve from its activist roots. Living in a culture that discourages activist work, many women's studies students feel passionately about activist issues, but with frustrating paralysis. For this reason, many of them pursue graduate degrees to equip themselves for an activist-oriented life, since they are not sure how to do this themselves. Without the presence of a concrete social movement, women's studies students need activist behavior and community modeled for them through the institution of the university. Teaching feminist activism to women's …

Becoming Otherwise: Politics, Metaphysics And Power In Judith Butler And Alfred North Whitehead, Alan Van Wyk Jan 2011

Becoming Otherwise: Politics, Metaphysics And Power In Judith Butler And Alfred North Whitehead, Alan Van Wyk

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The post-secular event within which we live is occasioned as the limit of the secular project. The secular project meets its limit in attempting to separate a religious private sphere from a public sphere while at the same time repeating as a demand a religious subjectivation of the public sphere: demanding conformity to a simple subjectivity, producing a world of simple subjects through a theologically determined metaphysics of conversion. In this latter demand secularism enforces a simplicity of its subjects and its world. Yet this simplicity cannot be taken up into or as life. To genuinely live and think the …

The Experiences Of Legally Married Same-Sex Couples In California, Erin Christine Falvey Jan 2011

The Experiences Of Legally Married Same-Sex Couples In California, Erin Christine Falvey

CGU Theses & Dissertations

With the aim of increasing practitioner competence, this dissertation provides marriage and family therapists and mental health service providers with insight into the experiences of legally married same-sex couples. Specifically, the inquiry's objective was to elicit narratives of strength and agency from these couples who navigated the oppressive circumstances of an anti-gay amendment campaign situated within the debate over the extension of marriage rights to same-sex couples. Fourteen couples were interviewed in order to respond to the dissertation's overriding question: How do the lesbian and gay couples and families who are among those who were legally married in California before …

The Ancestry And Descendants Of Harry William Mcglothlin Of Bloomer, Chippewa County, Wisconsin, Lawrence W. Onsager Jan 2011

The Ancestry And Descendants Of Harry William Mcglothlin Of Bloomer, Chippewa County, Wisconsin, Lawrence W. Onsager

Faculty Publications

McGlothlin is a variant spelling of McLaughlin, a name with both Irish and Scottish origins. McLaughlin is the Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Lochlainn, ‘son of the Scandinavian’, from the personal name Lochlann. Lochlann, a personal name meaning ‘stranger’, originally denoting a Scandinavian from the west of Norway (a Viking) or the Norse (Viking)-dominated part of Scotland.

In Irish Gaelic, the adjectival noun, ‘Lochlannach’ has the additional sense of robber/raider/marauder’. To further confuse the origin of the name, in Ireland some of the McLaughlins were originally O’Melaghlin – descendants of the King of Meath (Wikepedia; www.familyeducation.com).

The McGlothlin name appears …
