Review Of Fur, Fortune, And Empire: The Epic History Of The Fur Trade In America, Claiborne A. Skinner Jr.
Review Of Fur, Fortune, And Empire: The Epic History Of The Fur Trade In America, Claiborne A. Skinner Jr.
Faculty Publications & Research
Eric J. Dolin’s Fur, Fortune, and Empire is a concise, engaging, and remarkably comprehensive survey of the American fur trade. Though aimed at a general readership, the author presents a broad-ranging, sophisticated story of the commerce, supported by nearly a hundred pages of citations. The author says that the inspiration for the book came from a passage in James Truslow Adams’s The Founding of New England: “The Bible and the Beaver were the two mainstays of the Plymouth Colony in its early years.” He knew something about Pilgrims and something about the fur trade, but nothing of the Pilgrim fur …

"If we send them away to their death, our conscience will torture us until the day we die." Juozas Audejus, Vilnius, (Lithuania), 1943.
World War II ended 65 years ago, but political, economic and social consequences are still felt throughout the Western World. At personal levels, those consequences are demonstrated through individual narratives. The generation of people from the Baltic States, who grew up and suffered the turmoil of WWII, is passing. It is timely and imperative to record their pre-war childhood with values instilled by their parents and how those values have shaped their lives in carrying them through …

‘There Is No Original Creative Power In The Place’:* Creativity And Colonial Anxiety, Camilla Nelson
Arts Conference Papers
‘The Englishman possesses eminently the deductive and comparative faculty, and the organ of creativity,’ wrote the British academic turned colonial politician C.H. Pearson in 1859, in one of the earliest appearances of the abstract English noun ‘creativity’ in a published work. This paper investigates the concept of creativity as it was deployed in the cultural and economic fields of the nineteenth century, with particular attention to the relationship between the British metropolis and Australian colony. It examines the mobilisation of the term in diverse fields, including education, commerce and empire-building, by capitalists and workers, colonizers and colonized, in their strategic …

Writing And Rewriting Early Modern History: Five Sixteenth-Century English Chroniclers, Barrett L. Beer, Andrea Manchester
Writing And Rewriting Early Modern History: Five Sixteenth-Century English Chroniclers, Barrett L. Beer, Andrea Manchester
Quidditas
In the field of early modern historical writing, sixteenth-century English chronicles have been regarded as an outdated medieval form, and they and their authors have suffered in comparison with later works influenced by Renaissance humanism. Yet in the Tudor period, chronicles, especially the smaller, abridged versions, enjoyed a substantial readership and were reprinted multiple times—very often with revisions. The nature of and motivation behind these revisions reveal much about the varying personal priorities and backgrounds of the chroniclers as well as the readership for which they were writing. This study focuses on five sixteenth-century chroniclers, Thomas Cooper, Robert Crowley, Richard …
Re-Envisioning Reproduction: Dividing Life From Death In Charles Etienne’S De La Dissection, Miranda Mollendorf
Re-Envisioning Reproduction: Dividing Life From Death In Charles Etienne’S De La Dissection, Miranda Mollendorf
Quidditas
Charles Estienne’s De la Dissection des parties du corps humain (1546) presents the uterus not only as a site of generation and life, but also putrefaction and death. Estienne first writes about the uterus as a surgical site where life and death converge and must be separated, and then as an anatomical site where pain and pleasure are divided because of Galenic theories about the uterus that involve generation and corruption. In spite of frequent attempts to visually quarantine the uterus from the rest of the body with a printed inset, these surgical and anatomical separations between life and death …

Why Are We Doing This? Teaching Literacy Outside Of The English Classroom, Emily Robinson
Why Are We Doing This? Teaching Literacy Outside Of The English Classroom, Emily Robinson
The Utah English Journal
In assigning class work that involves the written word, I often find myself being presented with the ever-pressing question of middle school students: “Why do we have to do this? This isn’t English class!” And so I must ask myself the same question. Why bother with something that isn’t explicitly stated in the core curriculum for my subject area? As a student at Brigham Young University, more than one professor taught me that every teacher is a literacy teacher. I am now a social studies teacher who loves literacy.

On A Roll: Enticing English Language Learners To Absorb Vocabulary, Eileen Hennessy
The Utah English Journal
It’s true what they say: Teaching is full of surprises. It’s never boring and no day is ever like the previous or the next. Many times in my career I have been astounded by the knowledge that those little second grade brains bring to my Room 25. And, every once in a while, I am astounded for the opposite reason. That was case on this particular day when I was introducing a lesson on multiplemeaning words to my English language learners. Naturally, I wanted them to determine on their own what multiple-meaning words were.

In the lowest level of developmental writing at my community college, students really do learn skills from the ground up. Our objectives include covering basic grammatical concepts such as parts of speech, plurals, and subject-verb agreement. We also discuss different elements of writing such as main idea, supporting details, and transition words. Many college students feel resentful for being placed in a class that teaches them skills that are so elementary, and as a result, they are often resistant to class activities and assignments. In my experience, the choose-your-own adventure writing project is a great way to incorporate these learning …

Colonial Photography Across Empires And Islands, Mark Rice
American Studies Faculty/Staff Publications
When the US acquired its colonies of Puerto Rico and the Philippines in the aftermath of the 1898 war with Spain, those colonies had to be made known to American citizens. Lanny Thompson has described what he calls the “principle narratives” of the different colonies, and the ways that those narratives helped shape political debates about those colonies. Thompson notes that photography played an instrumental role in developing and representing those narratives. “Colonial Photography Across Empires and Islands” discusses the specific uses of photography in the US colonial regimes in the Philippines and Puerto Rico, the two colonies most frequently …

Book Review: Tight Fists Or Open Hands: Wealth And Poverty In Old Testament Law, Roger S. Nam
Book Review: Tight Fists Or Open Hands: Wealth And Poverty In Old Testament Law, Roger S. Nam
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
Excerpt: "David Baker fills a lacuna in scholarship with this theological interpretation of wealth and poverty in OT law. Under thematic categories, such as property rights and just lawsuits, Baker outlines the pertinent passages from biblical texts within the context of ancient Near Eastern legal collections. After a whirlwind survey, Baker acknowledges some commonalities between biblical and ancient law regarding economic concerns. But he emphasizes that the biblical law codes ultimately derive from the covenantal relationship with YHWH. Thus, biblical law collectively attests to higher standards of economic ethics than its ancient Near Eastern counterparts."

Stealing Horses And Hostile Conflict: 1833-1834 Drawings Of Mato-Tope And Sih-Chida, Kimberly Minor
School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work
The first documented Native American art on paper includes the following drawings at the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, Nebraska: In the Winter, 1833-1834 (two versions) by Sih-Chida (Yellow Feather) and Mato-Tope Battling a Cheyenne Chief with a Hatchet (1834) by Mato-Tope (Four Bears) as well as an untitled drawing not previously attributed to the latter. These images were produced and collected during the winter of 1833-1834 when the German Prince Maximilian of Wied and artist Karl Bodmer resided at Fort Clark in North Dakota. These drawings remained with Prince Maximilian’s estate until they were placed on long term loan …

H. T. Tsiang: Literary Innovator And Activist, Floyd Cheung
English Language and Literature: Faculty Publications
A Chinese exile in the United States, H. T. Tsiang (1899-1971) wrote several books in English that represent pioneer works in the canon of Asian American literature. Following the principle of nalai zhuyi, or strategic appropriation from other writers, Tsiang created a new, hybridized literature by reworking formal and thematic elements from classical and contemporary Chinese literature, the proletarian works of 1920s and 1930s America, and western classics like the plays of William Shakespeare. Although few know his work today, Tsiang is one of the earliest and most prolific innovators of Asian American literature, anticipating some of the appropriative methods, …

A Brief Look At Methodology And Grace In Wesleyan Theology, Kyle Blanchette
A Brief Look At Methodology And Grace In Wesleyan Theology, Kyle Blanchette
The Asbury Journal
In a recent piece for the Asbury Theological Journal, Nathan Crawford has attempted to put current understandings of emergent phenomena within the neurosciences in conversation with Christian soteriology; in particular, Crawford has sought to link up themes found in emergence with distinctively Wesleyan perspectives on sanctification. In this article, I offer some reflections on theological methodology in light of Crawford's analysis, and I identify some needed clarifications of Kenneth J. Collins's model of John Wesley's soteriology. In the latter half of the piece, I present a critical analysis of the issue of monergism and synergism in Wesley's understanding of grace.
Inhabiting The Garden: Bible, Theology And Mission, Lawson G. Stone
Inhabiting The Garden: Bible, Theology And Mission, Lawson G. Stone
The Asbury Journal
This essay explores the role of biblical exegesis in the task of Christian theology and in the contemporary global mission of the church from the perspective of an Old Testament scholar. It poses the question what a biblical exegesis would look like that was consistently Christian in its assumptions while, at the same time, honest and competent in dealing with the phenomena of the biblical text. Using the exegesis of the early centuries of the church as a case study, the essay develops insights into the role of serious biblical study in empowering the early church's vibrant expansion through the …

Conversion, Justification, And The Experience Of Grace In The Post-Aldergate Wesley: Towards An Understanding Of Who Is "A Child Of God.", Marlon D. De Blasio
Conversion, Justification, And The Experience Of Grace In The Post-Aldergate Wesley: Towards An Understanding Of Who Is "A Child Of God.", Marlon D. De Blasio
The Asbury Journal
Aldersgate is highlighted from the angle of its significance on Wesley's theological thinking and subsequent ministry, rather than from an emphasis on his point of conversion. The Post-Aldersgate Wesley developed a soteriological understanding that identified a "child of God" with distinct qualifications, namely justification by faith, the experience of grace, and the indwelling Spirit. A theology of conversion also emerges with definitive markers that constitute a new standing from non-Christian to Christian. Shifts in Wesley's theological understanding of Christian faith are evaluated. Justification by faith remained a strict soteriological principle in the mind of the mature Wesley. As well, the …
From Saul To Paul: The Apostle's Name Change And Narrative Identity In Acts 13:9, David Wenkel
From Saul To Paul: The Apostle's Name Change And Narrative Identity In Acts 13:9, David Wenkel
The Asbury Journal
It has long been accepted as a safe conclusion that the difference between the names Saul and Paul in the Book of Acts merely reflects cultural accommodation in a Hellenistic milieu. This study challenges this conclusion by examining the literary pattern and narrative usage of names. This study concludes that the name change reflects the true identity of Paul amidst conflict with Bar-Jesus/Elymas. The name 'Paul' is significant because of its etymology and the information provided by the narrative.
Leading A Polytheistic Faith To The Monotheistic God: A Study In Identifying Barriers To The Gospel In A Chinese Buddhist Community And Ways To Overcome Those Barriers, Agnes Wood
The Asbury Journal
This article is written for the purpose of exploring a way to lead a polytheistic faith, prevalent in the local Chinese Buddhist community (LCBC) in Brunei, to the reality of a monotheistic God as revealed in the Bible (1 Corinthians 8:6). It serves as a guide for the local Chinese church (CC) to lead the LCBC to see that God as a Creator is sufficient to be their God.
This article identifies the need of a missiological package in order to lead the LCBC to Christ. The CC needs to assist the LCBC to become receptive before the core of …

Austen, Byron, And Scott: Domestic Virtues And Fashioning History—Britain 1805 Through 1819, Joan Garden Cooper
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
James Chandler in England in 1819: the Politics Of Literary Culture and the Case of Romantic Historicism says that the second-generation Romantic writers were in essence historicist. According to Chandler, the literary work of England in 1819 is concerned with its own historical self-representation. Romantic writers can be regarded as fashioning the history by which they must be understood. Chandler regards Romanticism as a crucial period because despite the relatively short span of years to which it is usually assigned (1790-1830), close attention has been paid to its literary activity (3). Chandler's concern is "with writings that seek to state …
