The Effects Of Story Performance On Fourth And Fifth Grade Students' Comprehension And Oral Reading Fluency Of Narrative And Expository Texts, Shawn Kevin Wightman Jan 2011

The Effects Of Story Performance On Fourth And Fifth Grade Students' Comprehension And Oral Reading Fluency Of Narrative And Expository Texts, Shawn Kevin Wightman

Wayne State University Dissertations

This study was undertaken as an attempt to assess the effects of storytelling and reading aloud on fourth and fifth grade children's comprehension and oral reading fluency of both narrative and expository texts. The independent variable involved two strategies for introducing stories to children (storytelling and story reading) and a comparison strategy (silent reading). Each treatment (or strategy) was used, in part, to differentiate literacy instruction over a period of seven weeks.

Treatment 1 consisted of twenty-eight teacher-storytelling performances (fourteen narrative and fourteen expository). Likewise, Treatment 2 consisted of twenty-eight teacher-story reading aloud performances of narrative and expository texts (the …

Cultural Enrichment: Connecting African American Elementary Children To Academic Achievement, Deborah L. Winston Jan 2011

Cultural Enrichment: Connecting African American Elementary Children To Academic Achievement, Deborah L. Winston

Wayne State University Dissertations

A large, growing number of mis-educated American citizens are being produced by America's public schools. Many of these students are being funneled into the penal system shortly after dropping out of high school. This phenomenon is especially prevalent among African American male students, many of whom have withdrawn academically years prior to permanently dropping out of school. Additionally, to further underscore the importance of successfully educating African American students are the debilitating effects brought about after incarceration. About 4 million people in the United States, including 1.4 million Black men (13 percent of the adult male Black population) have currently …

The Angle

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"Phoebe Ranch awoke one morning to discover that a giant squid had replaced her house. It isn't very often that squid might replace things such as a house, but when these natural wonders occur, one must be ready to face the plethora of rubberneckers, which might be soon to follow."

‘Das Ist Zukunftssaat’: Political Travel And German Nationalism In Austria 1900-1933, Pieter M. Judson

History Faculty Works

Starting in the late nineteenth century, German nationalist organizations in Imperial Austria sought to anchor their communities in specific territories. Since the Imperial Austrian state did not recognize territorial nations within its boundaries, nationalist activists tried to realize their nations in specific places by promoting a sense of commonality that would link all members of the nation throughout the Empire. Some nationalists saw tourism and travel writing as strategic activities that could specifically strengthen both a sense of national belonging and a sense of national space. Increasingly, nationalists exhorted Germans in Austria to use their leisure and travel opportunities to …

Autonomy And Care In Medicine, Hille Haker Jan 2011

Autonomy And Care In Medicine, Hille Haker

Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This paper argues that the core principle of bioethics, autonomy, is rooted both in the 20th century history of the development of new medical technologies as in political liberalism transferred to medical practices, rendering the medical decision-making of patients a centerpiece of medical interventions. The paper shows how the ambiguity in the interpretation of autonomy reflects the ambivalence of bioethics towards making normative claims on the moral agents insofar as these go beyond the respect for a patient’s autonomy. In the second part, the paper analyzes the alternative approach of care ethics, which intends to emphasize both the vulnerability and …

Moral Analysis Of A Procedure At Phoenix Hospital, M. Therese Lysaught Jan 2011

Moral Analysis Of A Procedure At Phoenix Hospital, M. Therese Lysaught

Institute of Pastoral Studies: Faculty Publications and Other Works

A Catholic hospital in Phoenix “acted in accord with the Ethical and Religious Directives, Catholic moral tradition and universally valid moral precepts” in carrying out a controversial procedure on an ill pregnant woman that resulted in the death of the unborn child, theologian M. Therese Lysaught said in a moral analysis of the situation. Phoenix Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted determined that the November 2009 procedure constituted a direct abortion, and he subsequently stripped St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center of its Catholic status. (See Origins, Vol. 40, No. 31, for more documentation on the case.) In discussions leading up to …

Stabat Mater, Gustavo Leone Jan 2011

Stabat Mater, Gustavo Leone

Department of Fine & Performing Arts: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The Jesuits were expelled from the Spanish colonies in South America in 1767, leaving behind a remarkable musical legacy that was buried for over two hundred years. But the music did not disappear completely. Thanks to the Chiquitos people of Bolivia, the music was played and preserved throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.

In 1985, Swiss architect Hans Roth discovered 9,000 of these musical manuscripts and in 1990 UNESCO declared the churches of the Chiquitos a “patrimony of humanity”. Dr. Gustavo Leone of Loyola University Chicago's Department of Fine and Performing Arts has painstakingly retrieved and restored several of these …

In Between Seeing And Representing: An Exploration Of Visual Expression, Andrew Linde Jan 2011

In Between Seeing And Representing: An Exploration Of Visual Expression, Andrew Linde

Undergraduate Review

Strong design solutions are rarely arrived at by chance and are often inconceivable without an evolutionary process of ideation. Carefully crafted messages that take into account how a reader interprets an image demand the skills of a designer who is in a sense a translator, visualizing abstract concepts in concrete form. My inquiry revolves around the process of representing a salt shaker through a series of visual studies using diverse methods of expression such abstraction, reduction, and stylization. The intention was to investigate the question; What are the limits and possibilities of visual expression in the representation of a simple …

An Enlightened Woman: Judith Sargent Murray And The Call To Equality, Mary Hughes Jan 2011

An Enlightened Woman: Judith Sargent Murray And The Call To Equality, Mary Hughes

Undergraduate Review

The political and social upheaval of 18th century America is well documented in the writings of many great thinkers of that time. As the Age of Enlightenment stirred debate in many quarters, causing men like Thomas Jefferson to ponder the merits of equality among men, so too did it inspire women to question their own status in an emerging American culture. A little-known writer named Judith Sargent Murray emerged as an early contributor to the discussions of the role women in a changing society. The Sargent family’s openness to the study of a progressive faith, Universalism, and rejection of status …

How Faculty Attitudes And Expectations Toward Student Nationality Affect Writing Assessment, Peggy Lindsey, Deborah J. Crusan Jan 2011

How Faculty Attitudes And Expectations Toward Student Nationality Affect Writing Assessment, Peggy Lindsey, Deborah J. Crusan

English Language and Literatures Faculty Publications

Earlier research on assessment suggests that even when Native English Speaker (NSE) and Non-Native English Speaker (NNES) writers make similar errors, faculty tend to assess the NNES writers more harshly. Studies indicate that evaluators may be particularly severe when grading NNES writers holistically. In an effort to provide more recent data on how faculty perceive student writers based on their nationalities, researchers at two medium-sized Midwestern universities surveyed and conducted interviews with faculty to determine if such discrepancies continue to exist between assessments of international and American writers, to identify what preconceptions faculty may have regarding international writers, and to …

The Identification Of Conductor-Distinguished Functions Of Conducting, Alan J. Gumm, Sharyn L. Battersby, Kathryn L. Simon, Andrew E. Shankles Jan 2011

The Identification Of Conductor-Distinguished Functions Of Conducting, Alan J. Gumm, Sharyn L. Battersby, Kathryn L. Simon, Andrew E. Shankles

Research & Issues in Music Education

The purpose of the present study was to identify whether conductors distinguish functions of conducting similarly to functions implied in previous research. A sample of 84 conductors with a full range of experience levels (M = 9.8) and of a full range of large ensemble types and ensemble age levels rated how much they pay attention to 82 research-derived conducting considerations as they conduct. The subject-to-variable ratio was smaller than advisable for factor analysis, yet the representatively diverse sample provided reliable ratings (a = .95) and factor results that corroborate traditional music-related functions—Mechanical Precision Function and Expressive Function—and …
