Letter Concerning Story Of Attempted Bombing Of The Laie Temple, James Hallstrom Jan 2011

Letter Concerning Story Of Attempted Bombing Of The Laie Temple, James Hallstrom

Mormon Pacific Historical Society

As I promised I am sending you information on the December 7th Incident and the Miracle of all Miracles.

Exhibit A is a copy of the various stories the Church has on file in Salt Lake City. They maintain records on inspirational stories and even "rumors" that come to light. Exhibit B just surfaced last year in Arizona and varies just a little from the earlier version. An Elder Abe Ekins and his wife claim they met the pilot while they were serving as missionaries in Japan in 1985. They are searching through their dairies to find his name. …

"Pieces In A Pattern": Virginia Woolf And Family Memory, Kirsten Marie Thoming Jan 2011

"Pieces In A Pattern": Virginia Woolf And Family Memory, Kirsten Marie Thoming

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

By examining two memoirs written by Virginia Woolf and one memoir written by her father, Leslie Stephen, along with Woolf's novel, To the Lighthouse, I will investigate the memoir genre, particularly in the context of understanding a shared history. These four texts provide a means of analyzing how texts form a discourse and what can be learned when conversational roles are determined. By grouping these four works together, one can better understand the rich genre of memoir, while also getting a glimpse of the powerful complexity and narrative intricacies of the Woolf/Stephen family conversation.

A Sharp Eye For Kinds: Collection And Division In Plato's Late Dialogues, Devin Henry Jan 2011

A Sharp Eye For Kinds: Collection And Division In Plato's Late Dialogues, Devin Henry

Data and Test Instruments

This paper focuses on two methodological questions that arise from Plato’s account of collection and division. First, what place does the method of collection and division occupy in Plato’s account of philosophical inquiry? Second, do collection and division in fact constitute a formal “method” (as most scholars assume) or are they simply informal techniques that the philosopher has in her toolkit for accomplishing different philosophical tasks? I argue that Plato sees collection and division as useful tools for achieving two distinct goals – generating real definitions and discovering the basic natural kinds of a given domain of knowledge – both …

Aristotle's Pluralistic Realism, Devin Henry Jan 2011

Aristotle's Pluralistic Realism, Devin Henry

Data and Test Instruments

In this paper I explore Aristotle’s views on natural kinds and the compatibility of pluralism and realism, a topic that has generated considerable interest among contemporary philosophers. I argue that, when it came to zoology, Aristotle denied that there is only one way of organizing the diversity of the living world into natural kinds that will yield a single, unified system of classification. Instead, living things can be grouped and regrouped into various cross-cutting kinds on the basis of objective similarities and differences in ways that subserve the explanatory context. Since the explanatory aims of zoology are diverse and variegated, …

Air War And Dream: Photographing The London Blitz, Sharon Sliwinski Jan 2011

Air War And Dream: Photographing The London Blitz, Sharon Sliwinski

Data and Test Instruments

This paper treats Lee Miller's photographs of the London Blitz as a species of dream, which is to say, the Surrealist's images are regarded as a special form of thinking in which the conflicts and horrors of the times are represented in an effort to discharge their destructive force. This treatment calls upon Freud's discussion of dream-work, but also upon Didier Anzieu and Wilfred Bion's later writings, which consider the defensive and protective qualities of oneiric life. Miller's photography, like dream, provides a glimpse into the interior dimension of human existence. The essay argues that this interior dimension provides protection …

Icarus Returned: The Falling Man And The Survival Of Antiquity, Sharon Sliwinski Jan 2011

Icarus Returned: The Falling Man And The Survival Of Antiquity, Sharon Sliwinski

Data and Test Instruments

This chapter examines the so-called "Falling Man" photograph: Richard Drew's infamous image of an anonymous man in free fall, following his jump from the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Using Aby Warburg's iconographical method, I read this figure as a latter-day Icarus, putting Drew's photograph in dialogue with other representations of Icarus as a way to explore the image's unconscious force.
