Why Should A Library Invest In You? Or, How To Succeed With Short-Term Library And Archival Fellowship Grants, Susanna Ashton
Why Should A Library Invest In You? Or, How To Succeed With Short-Term Library And Archival Fellowship Grants, Susanna Ashton
Publications
Short term library fellowships are quite likely the single most common kind of national research grant given out to scholars in the humanities. The Massachusetts Historical Society alone gives out twenty short- term library fellowships. Almost ev-ery major private university and scholarly library (including the Huntington, New-berry, Yale’s Beinecke, Harvard’s Houghton, and the New- York Historical Society), many public universities (such as the University of Texas, Austin), many major pub-lic libraries (such as the Boston Public Library and the New York Public Library), and many small specialized research libraries administrate these types of grants.

The Return Of Bishop Brady: The Exhumation Of Perth's First Bishop, Odhran P. O'Brien, Jade O'Brien
Arts Papers and Journal Articles
In 1844-45, Perth's first bishop, John Brady, recruited in Europe a number of missionaries to return with him to Western Australia to establish churches, schools and missions. Among those he recruited were three Benedictine monks who founded what would later be known as the New Norcia mission. in the first article in this journal, from the letters of one of those Benedictine monks, we learnt of Brady's first journey as a bishop, in which he brought these missionaries back to his new diocese. In this article by Odhran O'Brien, we learn of Bishop Brady's final journey as it were, 165 …
The Role Of Revolution And Rioting In French Wine's Relationship With Place, Brian Murphy
The Role Of Revolution And Rioting In French Wine's Relationship With Place, Brian Murphy

French Wine: The role of revolution and rioting in establishing it’s relationship with “place”
Many of the rules and regulations surrounding the production of French wines have been heavily debated and criticised over the years. They have been accused of limiting French wine’s ability to compete with new world marketing successes. Appellation d’Origine Controlee represents France’s much imitated system of controlling both geographically based names and indeed production variables associated with these AOCs in terms of “place”.
Prior to the development of the Appellation d’origine controlee laws in 1937, France bore witness to two key wine related violent episodes in …

Migration and Intercultural Cinema in Ireland: A New Contemporary Movement?
‘Accented cinema’ (Naficy, 2001) is a transnational cinematic genre shaped by the personal exilic and diasporic experience of the filmmaker, and the thematic and stylistic aesthetics of the film. Much as Third Cinema, it subverts the practices of classical (Hollywood) cinema and auteur (European) cinema by depicting the interstitial positionality of the exiled/diasporic/migrant/ethnic film, filmmaker, and production practice. In places where filmmaking belongs to a quasi-homogeneous privileged circle, representations of the ‘accented’ subject can be highly indicative of national ideologies, power relations, and cross-cultural interactions. This paper will introduce the …

Investigating The Possibility Of A Standard Of Care For Professionals Who Teach Reading, John Michael Mccord
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) has consistently shown that approximately 40% of American students cannot read at grade level. In fact, most of these 40% of students read considerably below grade level. Unfortunately, these results have remained consistent in spite of reports such as the Nation at Risk in 1983 that first alerted everyone to the severity of the problem and provided remedies on how it could be remedied. The Nation at Risk Report was the impetus for a plethora of educational reform enactments at the federal level such as George H. Walker Bush’s education summit in 1989, …

Perpetrators, Bystanders, And Rescuers: Popular Attitudes Towards Ottoman Christians During The Armenian Genocide, Stefan Cristian Ionescu

This article explores the popular attitudes of Ottoman Muslims (mainly Turks and Kurds) and foreign residents (German, US, British, so on) towards their Christian (mainly Armenian and Syriac) friends, neighbours, and countrymen during the tragic events that occurred in WWI Ottoman Empire, known in Western scholarship as the Armenian genocide. Environmental Challenge And Animal Agency, Marek Špinka, Françoise Wemelsfelder
Environmental Challenge And Animal Agency, Marek Špinka, Françoise Wemelsfelder
Sentience Collection
Challenges are there to be overcome – seen usually as problems to avoid rather than as opportunities to enjoy. However, for humans a life without challenge would be likely to be dull and boring, lacking the enthusiasm and satisfaction that come with individual development. Could this also be true for animals? This chapter looks at the positive value of engaging with environmental challenges for animal welfare, proposing that this value lies in an animal’s expression of agency and the enhanced functional competence that it gains through this. It explores the different facets of agency, and provides more detailed discussion of …

Peak Oil And Transition: The Making Of A Documentary Video, John A. Duvall
Peak Oil And Transition: The Making Of A Documentary Video, John A. Duvall
Collected Faculty Scholarship
Many scientists and academics have raised serious concerns regarding the depletion of fossil fuels—especially the peaking of oil production—and its impact upon society. According to these researchers, oil for transportation and production will soon become expensive and scarce, and known alternative sources of energy will be insufficient to make up the difference within the required time frame. Therefore, world civilization (and the United States in particular) will soon undergo a crisis in energy supply that will have significant impacts on the structure of community life, economic wellbeing, political organization, and individual lifestyles.
One response to these threats is to attempt …

Can We Laugh? Jewish American Comedy's Expression Of Anxiety In A Time Of Change, 1965-1973, Emily Schorr Lesnick
American Studies Honors Projects
This Honors project is a site of intersection of my academic and activist interests in interrogating Whiteness, my social identity as a cultural Jewish American, and my creative passions in comedy performance. The tragicomic films The Graduate, Goodbye, Columbus, and Annie Hall of the 1960s and 1970s articulate the painful process of Jewish self- and group-definition in relation to dominant culture amidst fractures amongst Jews and external hostility and invitation. The collision of Jews’ long history of humor as a cultural practice and the turbulence and ambivalence of the post-World War II moment facilitated a space for Jewish …

We often think about democracy only as a political system where we elect those who will make laws that affect us. Yet everyday decisions taken in all kinds of organisations impact on us just as much. Therefore we have to know when decisions taken in organisations are going to affect us in ways that differ from the official organisational discourse. Whistleblowing plays a role in providing that knowledge and thus is a means to democracy. This book is a collection of essays on recent organisational and legal developments on whistleblowing in the US, UK, Europe, and Australia.
“A Consistently Useful Measure”: Robert Creeley’S Writing/Reading Of Wallace Stevens, Patrick James Dunagan
“A Consistently Useful Measure”: Robert Creeley’S Writing/Reading Of Wallace Stevens, Patrick James Dunagan
Gleeson Library Faculty and Staff Research and Scholarship
While William Carlos Williams is the immediate literary predecessor often associated with having early influence on the work of Robert Creeley, Wallace Stevens, beginning in Creeley’s first letters in the early 1950s to the poet Charles Olson, and re-emerging in his later work, makes several appearances in the printed record. References to Stevens culminate in the final section of Creeley’s long poem “Histoire de Florida,” published in 1996, the beginning of the last decade of his life, where lines from Stevens’ “Anecdote of the Jar” (a poem which, as will be shown, remained central to Creeley throughout his life) are …
