'Dear Juarez' Poster Protesting Drug Violence In Juárez, México, Anne Giangiulio
'Dear Juarez' Poster Protesting Drug Violence In Juárez, México, Anne Giangiulio
Selected Works Temporary Series
I designed the poster 'Dear Juárez' originally for 'Peace of Art: Design for Change' (www.peaceofartshow.org). This exhibit presents posters of social protest designed by professional and student designers to create awareness of the situation of violence in Cd, Juarez. To give a face to the violence and help people understand that the violence changes people’s lives. It is a display of Peace and/or protest on both sides of the border. More importantly, Peace of Art raises funds that will aid Cd. Juarez victims and their families. The theme of 2011's show was "Perspectives."

Ailbhe & Johnny's Wedding Invitations, Anne Giangiulio
Ailbhe & Johnny's Wedding Invitations, Anne Giangiulio
Selected Works Temporary Series
I designed this pop-up wedding invitation for my good friends. It was inspired by a much simpler, handmade pop-up card from Oaxaca, Mexico that the groom had bought the bride when they were dating and that they both loved. The hands of bridesmaids, family, and friends were enlisted for the measuring, cutting, tying and gluing that these invites required. With coordinating lined envelopes, hand-calligraphy addresses and metallic gold wax seals, These invitations were truly a labor of love. We even made confetti out of any leftover paper scraps!
Dealing Death And Drugs: The Big Business Of Dope In The U.S. And Mexico, Anne Giangiulio
Dealing Death And Drugs: The Big Business Of Dope In The U.S. And Mexico, Anne Giangiulio
Selected Works Temporary Series
Excerpt from the book I designed, 'Dealing Death and Drugs: The Big Business of Dope in the U.S. and Mexico' by El Paso City Representatives Susie Byrd and Beto O’Rourke. Published by Cinco Puntos Press. Byrd and O’Rourke soon realized American drug use and United States' failed War on Drugs are at the core of problem. In Dealing Death and Drugs—a book written for the general reader—they explore the costs and consequences of marijuana prohibition. They argue that marijuana prohibition has created a black market so profitable that drug kingpins are billionaires and drug control doesn’t stand a chance. Using …

Which Side Are You On? The Story Of A Song, Anne Giangiulio
Which Side Are You On? The Story Of A Song, Anne Giangiulio
Selected Works Temporary Series
Excerpt from the graphic novel I designed, 'Which Side Are You On? The Story of a Song' by George Ella Lyon, in collaboration with Brooklyn illustrator Christopher Cardinale, published by Cinco Puntos Press. 'Which Side Are You On?' tells the story of a song which was written in 1931 by Florence Reece in a rain of bullets. It has been sung by people fighting for their rights all over the world. Florence’s husband Sam was a coal miner in Kentucky. Many of the coal mines were owned by big companies, who kept wages low and spent as little money on …

The "Other Hand Of God," The Church And Other Religious Traditions, Ruben C. Mendoza
The "Other Hand Of God," The Church And Other Religious Traditions, Ruben C. Mendoza
Theology Department Faculty Publications
For the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC), the Holy Spirit appears to serve as a key in understanding and interpreting other religious traditions and how the Church is to relate with their followers. The Asian bishops consistently affirm that the Holy Spirit is actively present in other religions and that these religions contain expressions and practices that are inspired and prompted by the Spirit. This is why these manifestations of the Spirit’s presence demands critical discernment and that these must be in dialogue with the Spirit’s activity in the Church. In and through this the Spirit’s manifold works within …
Working To Recover The Essence Of Education For The Sake Of Teaching And Teacher Education: Towards A Phenomenological Understanding Of The Forgotten, Ontological Aspects Of Learning, James Magrini
Philosophy Scholarship
The current definition of a good teacher is grounded in sets of pre-determined competencies established and imposed upon schools by bureaucratic organizations that are, proximally and for the most part, removed from the foundational elements of education, namely, the existential, embodied conscious experience of teaching and learning as it unfolds in the lived world of schools and universities. As Pinar (2004) observes, contemporary American education is deterministic, and "in its press for efficiency and standardization,' has the effect of reducing "teachers to automata" (p. 28). Thus, the subject-hood, or authentic identity, of both teachers and students is not of their …

Community Singing As Troubled Learning: Exploring Musical, Social, And Ethical Dimensions Of Safety And Risk Among Adult Singers, Deanna Yerichuk
Community Singing As Troubled Learning: Exploring Musical, Social, And Ethical Dimensions Of Safety And Risk Among Adult Singers, Deanna Yerichuk
Music Faculty Publications
How are safety and risk negotiated within community singing? Many group facilitation techniques within adult education take as foundational that participants must feel safe to participate fully in group learning. This concern for participants safety acknowledges that power and privilege circulate unequally within any social learning context, shaped by race, gender, class, ability, sexual orientation, and in the case of singing, musical competencies. However, community singing can be safe without being comfortable. Comfort, therefore, is not the same as safety, although the two concepts are often conflated. A lack of ease with the process and/or content suggests a possibility of …

Bartolomeo Ammannati: Moving Stones, Managing Waterways, And Building An Empire For Duke Cosimo I De' Medici, Felicia M. Else
Bartolomeo Ammannati: Moving Stones, Managing Waterways, And Building An Empire For Duke Cosimo I De' Medici, Felicia M. Else
Art and Art History Faculty Publications
This study, drawing on new information from unpublished documents, reconsiders the working methods and responsibilities of sculptor and architect Bartolomeo Ammannati in the context of Cosimo I de' Medici's creation of a grand ducal Tuscan empire. Ammannati was an indispensable part of the broader enterprise of ducal and grand ducal building activity, urban development, and court bureaucracy. His success was reliant on skills different than those emphasized by Giorgio Vasari. Instead of divinely inspired disegno or rampant terribilità, Ammannati showed his technical, organizational, and supervisory skills to move stones, build bridges, manage waterways, and keep track of expenses - the …

This project would be one dimension of a larger initiative to fully integrate the campuses. The idea is to establish a program to link the campuses through networking opportunities where faculty, staff and students are encouraged to develop "friendships" throughout the two campuses. The project would be launched on a select key date; i.e., anniversary date of VCU (or other important date), by the formation of a human chain connecting the two campuses between Broad and Belvidere Streets and Sanger Hall, about 1.2 miles of people committed to the cause. This would be a major campaign for VCU with the …
Celestial Vaults In English Gothic Architecture, John Shannon Hendrix
Celestial Vaults In English Gothic Architecture, John Shannon Hendrix
Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation Faculty Publications
Many of the vaults in English Gothic cathedrals and churches are catechisms of cosmologies and celestial vaults. The tierceron and lierne ribs at Lincoln Cathedral, for example, and later lierne and net vaults at Bristol Cathedral and St. Mary Redcliffe, for example, display the geometries that can be found in medieval cosmologies such as the De Luce and De Lineis, Angulis et Figuris of Robert Grosseteste in the thirteenth century. The vaults can be read as intelligible structures of matter and the heavenly bodies. The vaulting of the nave of Lincoln Cathedral between 1235 and 1245, during the bishopric of …

Social Causes Of Obesity, Gregory Katz
Social Causes Of Obesity, Gregory Katz
Quill & Scope
Two thirds of our country is overweight and a third is obese. Meanwhile, medical costs continue to rise, largely as a consequence of treating those with chronic disease. And our current medical sys-tem seems more focused on treating symptoms of diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease rather than their root causes. This paper examines the origins of these problems and at-tempts to determine the role of physicians in reversing these trends.

Paul, The Athenians, And The Breath Of Life: Acts 17:22-31, William Russell Horst
Theses and Dissertations
This MA thesis argues that Paul's speech to the Athenians in Acts 17:22-31 includes biblical allusions, as well as concepts and turns of phrase that bear a strong resemblance to those of other Hellenistic Jewish texts, especially those related to the breath of life.
Catechesis For A Practicing Church, Jim Fox
Catechesis For A Practicing Church, Jim Fox
Theses and Dissertations
In "Catechesis for a Practicing Church" I . . . survey the history of Christian catechesis (looking for norms regarding content and structure), explore methods and styles of contemporary experts in secular and Christian education, and reflect on the context of a practicing church as observed specifically in Vineyard Community Church (VCC) to define and build a contemporary catechesis for VCC (the model) as well as for the larger practicing church.
Group Rights: A Defense, David Ingram
Group Rights: A Defense, David Ingram
Philosophy: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Human rights belong to individuals in virtue of their common humanity. Yet it is an important question whether human rights entail or comport with the possession of what I call group-specific rights (sometimes referred to as collective rights), or rights that individuals possess only because they belong to a particular group. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) says they do. Article 15 asserts the right to nationality, or citizenship. Unless one believes that the only citizenship compatible with a universal human rights regime is cosmopolitan citizenship in a world state – a conception of citizenship that is not countenanced …
