Engaging Ancient Islamic Traditions In The Poetry Of Saleha Ghabesh, Saddik M. Gohar Mar 2011

Engaging Ancient Islamic Traditions In The Poetry Of Saleha Ghabesh, Saddik M. Gohar

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper explores the integration of ancient Islamic heritage in Emirati literature, particularly the history of the rise and fall of the Muslim Empire in Andalusia, in an attempt to confront regional challenges and international transformations in the current era. Navigating the intersection between heritage and identity, the Emirati poet, Saleha Ghabesh, attempts to incorporate the ancient Islamic heritage in Andalusia as a dynamics of liberation in order to articulate domestic issues integral to the geopolitics of the United Arab Emirates and the Arab region in the age of globalization. Transforming the mythic history of Andalusia into a narrative of …

Women’S Rights: Tunisian Women In The Workplace, Sangeeta Sinha Mar 2011

Women’S Rights: Tunisian Women In The Workplace, Sangeeta Sinha

Journal of International Women's Studies

Tunisia is unique among Arab nations, due to the fact that women have been granted equal rights by the Constitution. Tunisia obtained its independence from France in 1956. During the colonial period, women were marginalized, and they little access to education. Economic activity was largely confined to the household, while wearing of the veil was widespread. Since 1956 Tunisian women have made great strides toward achieving greater rights, but has it been enough. This study describes the current status of women in Tunisia given the changing socio-political scene. Have women’s rights progressed or has they been hampered by cultural and …

Asian Americans And Politics: Voting Behavior And Political Involvement, Elizabeth Hoene Mar 2011

Asian Americans And Politics: Voting Behavior And Political Involvement, Elizabeth Hoene

Political Science Theses and Capstones

Voting behavior and political involvement are two commonly studied topics among political scientists today, most commonly involving Caucasian, African, and Hispanic Americans. However, there have been relatively few studies done on Asian American and Asian immigrant voting behavior and their political involvement. What causes Asian Americans and Asian immigrants to vote the way they do? How involved are they in American politics and why? These are questions that I am aiming to answer through the studying of the Pilot National Asian American Political Survey 2000- 2001 from the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research. Socioeconomic factors such as income, …

How Can A Chinese Democracy Be Pragmatic?, Sor-Hoon Tan Mar 2011

How Can A Chinese Democracy Be Pragmatic?, Sor-Hoon Tan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Early in the last century, some of John Dewey's Chinese students had a chance to influence the fate of the first Chinese Republic. These individuals, Hu Shih being the most prominent example, were identified as Chinese liberals in the political spectrum of that time and advocated education reforms as the chief means of "saving China." Despite the hope for radical social change engendered by the New Culture Movement, education reforms failed, and cultural transformation did not lead in a democratic direction, at least not a Pragmatic democracy as conceived by Dewey. A century later, China is again going through a …

La Lucha Por La Libertad Y La Identidad: La Casa De Los Espíritus Como Comentario Sobre La Evolución Del Movimiento Feminista En Chile, Mary Stirchak Mar 2011

La Lucha Por La Libertad Y La Identidad: La Casa De Los Espíritus Como Comentario Sobre La Evolución Del Movimiento Feminista En Chile, Mary Stirchak

World Languages and Cultures

This project will analyze Isabel Allende's novel La casa de los espíritus and provide insight into how the novel functions as a commentary about the feminist movement in Chile during the 20th century. Though La casa de los espíritus is a work of fiction, the project will attempt to draw connections between the experiences of the female characters in the novel and the experiences of women in real life. The actions of each female character represent the struggles of real women as the attempt to subvert the oppression of the patriarchal system. Each woman in the novel attempts to …

Sudden Possibilities: Porpoises, Eggcorns, And Error, Darren Crovitz Mar 2011

Sudden Possibilities: Porpoises, Eggcorns, And Error, Darren Crovitz

Faculty Articles

[...] the keys to their development as writers often lie hidden in the very features of their writing that English teachers have been trained to brush aside with a marginal code letter or a scribbled injunction to "Proofread!" (5) A punitive emphasis on correctness, Shaughnessy argues, can actually have the opposite of its intended effect on basic writers, stifling their experiments with language for fear of failure (8). A reflection on the rationale of error-making must extend beyond a student's apparent inability to memorize and apply a rule, toward deeper considerations: "a teacher who would work with [basic writers] might …

Law, History, And Feminism, Tracy A. Thomas Mar 2011

Law, History, And Feminism, Tracy A. Thomas

Akron Law Faculty Publications

This is the introduction to the book, Feminist Legal History. This edited collection offers new visions of American legal history that reveal women’s engagement with the law over the past two centuries. It integrates the stories of women into the dominant history of the law in what has been called “engendering legal history,” (Batlan 2005) and then seeks to reconstruct the assumed contours of history. The introduction provides the context necessary to appreciate the diverse essays in the book. It starts with an overview of the existing state of women’s legal history, tracing the core events over the past two …

Humor In Code-Mixed Airline Advertising, Maria Jose Garcia Vizcaino Mar 2011

Humor In Code-Mixed Airline Advertising, Maria Jose Garcia Vizcaino

Department of Spanish and Latino Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This article examines how humor works in the code-mixed advertising campaigns of the Spanish airline company Vueling. Drawing on the fetishism approach to multilingual advertising (Kelly-Holmes, 2005) and the theory of incongruity (Raskin, 1985), this paper explores three main types of humorous deviations in Vueling campaigns: structural, phonetic, and visual. The analysis confirms that humor in Vueling ads is produced by deviations at the formal rather than semantic level of language, specifically through the insertion of foreign languages (mainly English and French) into Spanish colloquial expressions. These foreign elements are partially “domesticated” into local Spanish frames by creative code-mixing mechanisms …

Palestinian Women’S Everyday Resistance: Between Normality And Normalisation, Sophie Richter-Devroe Mar 2011

Palestinian Women’S Everyday Resistance: Between Normality And Normalisation, Sophie Richter-Devroe

Journal of International Women's Studies

The paper traces Palestinian women’s understandings, practices and framings of everyday resistance. Women’s resistance acts consist of both materially-based survival strategies and various coping strategies at the ideational level. Focusing on the latter, this study investigates women’s practices of travelling to create (a sense of) normal joyful life for themselves, their families, friends and community with the aim of shedding light upon the complex and mutually constitutive interplay between women’s agency and the various social and political power structures. It is argued that Palestinian women, although framing their acts of crossing Israeli-imposed physical restriction as acts of resistance against the …

Arab Women And Political Development, Rowaida Al Maaitah, Hadeel Al Maaitah, Hmoud Olaimat, Muntaha Gharaeibeh

Journal of International Women's Studies

Although many measures have been taken by the majority of Arab countries to enhance women’s representation in decision-making positions, women’s participation in public life and positions of power have not been achieved the desired level. The Arab region ranks the lowest in the world in terms of women’s participation in parliaments. The objective of this paper is to examine the Political participation of women in the Arab countries and identify different challenges that impede Arab women participation in politics and decision making. Challenges include: cultural factors, the stereotyped image of women, women's low self-confidence, lack of coordination among women's organizations, …

The Millennium Development Goals: Prospects For Gender Equality In The Arab World, Nadine Sika Mar 2011

The Millennium Development Goals: Prospects For Gender Equality In The Arab World, Nadine Sika

Journal of International Women's Studies

This study is an assessment of the Millennium Development Goals in the Arab world with Egypt as a case study. The analysis focuses on access to primary education, gender equality, and women empowerment in the Arab world with special emphasis on Egypt. The study found that most Arab countries are on the right track toward achieving most of the MDGs by 2015. However, discriminatory social norms, laws, and practices are still at the heart of gender inequality in the Arab world, and therefore need to be further incorporated in the MDGs to advance a more egalitarian developmental approach.

Promoting Gender-Sensitive Justice And Legal Reform In The Palestinian Territories: Perspectives Of Palestinian Service Providers, Stephanie Chaban

Algerian Women Between French Emancipation And Religious Domination On Marriage And Divorce From 1959 Ordonnance No. 59-274 To The 1984 Code De La Famille, Teresa Camacho De Abes Mar 2011

Algerian Women Between French Emancipation And Religious Domination On Marriage And Divorce From 1959 Ordonnance No. 59-274 To The 1984 Code De La Famille, Teresa Camacho De Abes

Journal of International Women's Studies

The impact of the Code de la famille on Algerian women has been felt for 27 years and criticism of it is based on is supposed adherence to Sharī’ah. This is not an adequate assessment of this legal document or its amendments. It is a more complex issue that involves the attempt of society to re-define its identity as Algerian and Islamic after independence. In attempting to establish Algerian women’s identity there was a shift from fearless independent combatants who moved among men during the struggle for independence to a space for women as strictly wives and mothers within the …
