Monetization And Tradition: Cash And Conciliation In Contemporary Samoa, Cluny Macpherson, LaʻAvasa Macpherson
Pacific Studies
This article explores the evolving role of cash in Samoan ceremonial traditions, where it is increasingly used alongside or in place of traditional symbolic goods. While the integration of cash into ceremonies has been relatively seamless, its use in more culturally sensitive rituals has proven problematic. The paper examines how these changes challenge the traditional social variables of contemporary Samoa.

Increased Enrollment For The Graphic And Print Science Program Through Specialty Print Advertisement, Christa Ickowski
Honors Theses
This project evaluates whether a mailer (containing information on the Graphic and Print Science Program) that is folded in a unique manner and containing color graphics would attract more students to the program. With this printed piece the capabilities of the program's students and the program are demonstrated to attract more motivated students who wish to pursue the Graphic and Print Science field. The current method of advertising the program consists of sending form letters which tend to be a little interest to the target audience of high school graphic arts students. With a specialty folded, 4-color mailing in a …
Coping With Customer Sexual Harassment: Examining Retaliation As A Coping Strategy And Testing A Contextual Model, Valerie J. Morganson
Coping With Customer Sexual Harassment: Examining Retaliation As A Coping Strategy And Testing A Contextual Model, Valerie J. Morganson
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Research has established that customer sexual harassment (CSH) is a widespread and harmful workplace phenomenon. This dissertation consists of two studies on the topic. The first sought to operationalize a measure of coping with customer sexual harassment. In addition to three traditional factors of sexual harassment coping (i.e., external, internal, and social), Study 1 predicted that worker retaliation toward the customer would constitute an additional form of coping with CSH. The measure of coping was tested using a sample of 200 women customer service workers. Data were analyzed using factor analysis. As expected, retaliation was supported as a coping strategy, …

Internet Usage And Religious Authority: A Case Study Of The Catholic Church Of South Korea, Youngho Park
Institute for the Humanities Theses
This study examines what impact the Internet usage by church members has on religious authority, focusing on a case study of the Korean Catholic Church. The goals of this study are to investigate the ways in which church members use the Internet for communication in the Church, to examine whether and how the Internet usage by church members affects religious authority, and to identify what kind of religious authority is affected. This study encompasses two main parts: historical background of the Church's Internet usage and analysis of the online forums about "The Four Major Rivers Project". The latter is divided …

The Book Of Memes, Michael Ray Owens
The Book Of Memes, Michael Ray Owens
English Theses & Dissertations
The Book of Memes describes the classic battle between free will and mind control. In a process similar to installing new software on a computer, an investigator modifies the behavior of unruly high school students by implantation of new memes, tiny bits of information that regulate human behavior much the same as genes regulate human biology. In short order the students change from thugs to model students. But in the rush to get the job done, the investigator ignores issues such as freedom to choose, and the students are given no choice whether they want new memes or not.
A Year And A Day, Peter Surran
A Year And A Day, Peter Surran
English Theses & Dissertations
This thesis is a spiritual memoir relating the events, characters and situations the author encountered during his five years in a Roman Catholic religious order, particularly the novitiate year. Relying on his memories and journals from the period, the author has attempted to tell the story as faithfully as possible. Intermingled with the story are reflections on faith, church and God, particularly the ways in which God was working throughout that period of the author's life. The last names of others involved in the story have been withheld in order to protect their identity as much as possible.
Women Of Foreign Superstition: Christianity And Gender In Imperial Roman Policy, 57-235., Karl E. Baughman
Women Of Foreign Superstition: Christianity And Gender In Imperial Roman Policy, 57-235., Karl E. Baughman
Dissertations
The relationship between Christianity and the imperial Roman government from 57 to 235 was partially dependent upon the enforcement of traditional gender roles and the exercise of those roles by women in unique positions of influence. Rather than attempt to break free of their defined gender roles, women with distinctive connections to Christianity and the Roman government were, especially during times of crisis, able to influence imperial policies that provided an atmosphere conducive to positive growth for the early Church. This work concentrates on the crises which were connected to gender---especially times during which the emperors failed to fulfill their …
Effect Of A Mindfulness Intervention On Community College Students' Writing Apprehension And Writing Performance, Megan E. Britt
Effect Of A Mindfulness Intervention On Community College Students' Writing Apprehension And Writing Performance, Megan E. Britt
Teaching & Learning Theses & Dissertations
This experimental study used a quantitative data collection strategy to examine whether a mindfulness intervention, a three-minute breathing exercise marked by focused attention on the sensations of breath, would affect writing anxiety and writing performance measures. The researcher compared Daly-Miller Writing Apprehension surveys and narrative writing samples from 277 students enrolled in a freshman composition course at a southeastern community college, half of whom practiced the mindful-breathing technique at class onset.
Quantitative results revealed students in the mindful-breathing group experienced a statistically significant decrease in writing apprehension and mechanical error scores from pre- to post-measures when compared to controls. No …
Children Of The Sun, Anton Delateur
Children Of The Sun, Anton Delateur
English Theses & Dissertations
Children of the Sun is a novel presented as main character Clay Felts's Master's thesis in anthropology. The story migrates from the Columbia Basin of Eastern Washington to the Peruvian Andes, following Clay's quest to translate Inca quipu knots. The novel engages with several themes, the most pervasive of which is the inscrutability of the human experience. From this foundation, the story goes on to explore the importance of family versus material accomplishment, the effects of discovery and loss, and the colonial enterprise.
Memory, Identity, And The Rhetoric Of Quilts, J. Jane Amelon
Memory, Identity, And The Rhetoric Of Quilts, J. Jane Amelon
English Theses & Dissertations
Quilts have been documented as artifacts of past experiences and social circumstances, but the rhetorical aspects have been largely unexplored. In this study, I establish quilting as a form of knowledge about memory, one of the canons of rhetoric. This task requires a rhetorical framework of memory to accomplish its end.
In order to create a rhetorical framework for the study of memory, I examine preservative and generative memory as represented in women's quilts. Previous quilt studies have not addressed these two facets of memory, and previous memory studies have paid little or no attention to quilts. Additionally, this study …
Dispersion Or Re-Segregation: A Spatial And Temporal Analysis Of Public Policies And Their Impact On Urban African American Mobility, Brandi Lynette Blessett
Dispersion Or Re-Segregation: A Spatial And Temporal Analysis Of Public Policies And Their Impact On Urban African American Mobility, Brandi Lynette Blessett
Theses and Dissertations in Urban Studies
This study seeks to test Hirsch's second ghetto thesis in the city of Baltimore, Maryland. Hirsch suggested that the role of government, public policies, and administrative discretion were responsible for the re-segregation of African Americans into second ghetto communities in Chicago. Many scholars have used Hirsch's framework to explain ghetto formation. This investigation seeks to extend the literature in several ways. First, several national policies were investigated to determine their impact on African American mobility in Baltimore: the Housing Act of 1937 (public housing), the Housing Act of 1949 (urban renewal), and the Interstate Highway Act of 1956 (transportation). Second, …
The Dust Grows Hard, Eric Ramseier
The Dust Grows Hard, Eric Ramseier
English Theses & Dissertations
The Dust Grows Hard is a collection of short stories taking place in Kansas. The stories take place in mostly rural or isolated settings. Thematically, the stories are concerned with the character's inability to effectively communicate and what that does to their ability to function in the larger society. The stories also examine the ripple effect created from the inability to communicate on parenting and intimate relationships. The stories examine how self-mythologizing and neuroses affect not just one, but many,
The Disappearing Disease, Heather M. Weddington
The Disappearing Disease, Heather M. Weddington
English Theses & Dissertations
This series of connected essays explores the aesthetic of fragmentation, not as a means to disrupt narrative, but as a means to stretch that narrative. It includes both lyric and traditional forms, along with a series of flash essays that puncture the present action with moments from the past. The essays vary tonally, from the serious to the comic, and though they are connected through first person narration, they are more connected thematically, through an exploration of sexuality, faith, idealism and its loss, and the ways in which gender is performed.

The Ontological Foundations For Natural Law Theory And Contemporary Ethical Naturalism, Bernard Mauser
The Ontological Foundations For Natural Law Theory And Contemporary Ethical Naturalism, Bernard Mauser
Dissertations (1934 -)
This dissertation explores some objections to natural law theory- many of which are also leveled against contemporary naturalism. Despite the way the natural law tradition has fallen into disrepute in much of the American academy, this dissertation defends a classical Thomistic approach to natural law from some modern and contemporary criticisms. It begins with a brief explanation of the theory of natural law that will be defended from these contemporary objections. Chapter three examines G.E. Moore and David Hume's classical problems posed to natural law, along with some contemporary defenders of Moore's position. These arguments are purported to undermine using …
Regional Consciousness In American Literature, 1860-1930, Kelsey Louise Squire
Regional Consciousness In American Literature, 1860-1930, Kelsey Louise Squire
Dissertations (1934 -)
This study establishes a conversation between regional literary theory, ecocriticism, and places studies as a necessary component of a more nuanced understanding of regionalism as depicted by mobile American authors in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Between 1860 and 1930, regional writers faced the challenge of making place relevant in an increasingly mobile world. In contrast to scholarly studies that situate the relevance of regionalism as a vehicle for a larger cause (for example, nationalism or feminism), or conversely, studies that focus on articulating an overly rigid "regional identity" of places or authors, I employ the term "regional …
William James's Undivided Self And The Possibility Of Immortality, Anthony Karlin
William James's Undivided Self And The Possibility Of Immortality, Anthony Karlin
Dissertations (1934 -)
The dissertation explores William James's conception of the self and his belief in the possibility of immortality. In The Divided Self of William James, James scholar Richard M. Gale argues that James unwittingly advanced two incompatible types of selves: a self-assertive "Promethean" self who maximizes desire-satisfaction and a passive mystic self who favors conceptless, mystical intuition. I argue that Gale's dichotomy of James is incorrect and that James's conception of the self is better understood through his growing belief in the possibility of immortality. I develop this idea by considering relevant aspects of both James's personal and philosophical development. I …
