Anti-Malarial Activity Exhibited By Florida Mangrove Endophytes, Jacqueline Lee Salm
Anti-Malarial Activity Exhibited By Florida Mangrove Endophytes, Jacqueline Lee Salm
Honors Thesis and Capstone Projects
Many organisms around the world including plants, marine organisms, and microbes release chemicals used for things such as pigment or defense against other organisms. These chemicals are known as secondary metabolites and have been found to exhibit promising activity against many infectious diseases and cancer. Natural products chemistry is the study of these secondary metabolites with one of the purposes to discover new small organic molecules for potential pharmaceutical use in the future. With parasitic diseases, such as malaria, prominent throughout the poorest regions of the world, there are great opportunities for discovering anti-malarial drugs from natural products. Approximately 250 …
Communications Technology In The 2008 Election And Beyond: An Analysis Of Obama Emails, Richard Holtzman, Janet Prichard
Communications Technology In The 2008 Election And Beyond: An Analysis Of Obama Emails, Richard Holtzman, Janet Prichard
History and Social Sciences Faculty Journal Articles
No political candidate has adopted and employed communications technology to connect with potential voters more effectively than Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential race. Yet, scholarly literature has neglected systematic studies of perhaps the most significant piece of Obama’s communications revolution: the use of millions of targeted emails. No in-depth analyses of these emails have been undertaken. Our research aims to fill this important gap by systematically examining the targeted emails themselves in an effort to understand this phenomenon and its larger significance. We do so by charting their frequency and identifying distribution trends, as well as exploring their content.

Samuel Johnson At Prayer, Elizabeth Kraft
Samuel Johnson At Prayer, Elizabeth Kraft
Religion in the Age of Enlightenment
Samuel Johnson's life was punctuated by prayer. In this essay, I will examine Johnson's prayer practice in terms of both meaning and behavior. Johnson's Dictionary of the English Language provides clear and succinct evidence in Johnson's own words of what he understood prayer and the act of praying to be. Of the two definitions of prayer and the seven definitions of to pray included in the Dictionary, the first in each category concerns religion and simply states that the noun and the verb are the same. According to Johnson the first meaning of to pray is "to make petitions to …
Last Rites And The Dynamics Of Mormon Liturgy, Jonathan A. Stapley
Last Rites And The Dynamics Of Mormon Liturgy, Jonathan A. Stapley
BYU Studies
Jonathan Stapley tells the history of changes in death and burial practices by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In a significant departure from Protestant American culture, early Mormons could administer deathbed rituals of placing their hands on the dying, anointing them with oil, and dedicating them to God. In 1922, Church leaders instructed against that practice, but it continues as a folk tradition. Early Mormons washed a deceased family member's body and clothed it and wrapped it in a white shroud; later, bodies were dressed either in good clothing or temple ceremonial clothing by Relief …
