Transatlantic Print Culture, 1880–1940: Emerging Media, Emerging Modernisms [Review], David P. Rando
Transatlantic Print Culture, 1880–1940: Emerging Media, Emerging Modernisms [Review], David P. Rando
English Faculty Research
It appears that the moderns are catching up to the Victorians at last. Ann Ardis and Patrick Collier’s edited volume, Transatlantic Print Culture, 1880–1940, represents the most forceful statement to date about the possibilities and opportunities for print culture studies in the modernist period. While the study of print culture has flourished in Victorian studies for decades, particularly through the Research Society for Victorian Periodicals and its journal, Victorian Periodicals Review, modernist studies has been slower to embrace print culture studies. There are many historical and theoretical reasons for this, but even field nomenclature may make a difference. “Victorian studies” …
What Are They Saying About The Jonah Psalm? An Analysis Of The Current Trends In Its Interpretation, Daniel A. Neal
What Are They Saying About The Jonah Psalm? An Analysis Of The Current Trends In Its Interpretation, Daniel A. Neal
Theology Graduate Theses
The aim of this thesis is to examine the current state of the question of the Jonah psalm, particularly its peculiar placement within the prose of the book of Jonah. Its date of composition, rhetorical features, and overall purpose are of specific interest, and are inspected as such. Definitive answers prove elusive in regards to the psalm’s date of composition, as it can be placed, with varying degrees of conviction, between the 8th and 2nd centuries BC. Rhetorical analysis proves more enlightening, as comparing the psalm to the surrounding prose underscores the linguistic and rhetorical synergy between the …

Line Relationships: More To Lines Than Meets The Eye, Robert N. Oddy
Line Relationships: More To Lines Than Meets The Eye, Robert N. Oddy
School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship
Lines in stained glass artwork are important design features. With copper foil and lead came techniques, they are often prominent and black with the light source behind them. Carefully designed and implemented lines can enhance the sense of depth in a picture and have a rather paradoxical nature in our work. I find that I have a rather complicated relationship with my lines.
The Lead Line Effect: Shape Without The Came, Robert N. Oddy
The Lead Line Effect: Shape Without The Came, Robert N. Oddy
School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship
In a previous article, I have mentioned my view that stained glass work is akin to impressionism. We use the features of the glass to suggest detail in our subject matter. However, I often find that for some details, this approach is not adequate. For an example, see the scales in Koi, figure 1. It is also not always practical to implement this fine detail by joining large numbers of very small pieces of glass. In this article, I will talk about methods that produce effects compatible with the ‘lead’ lines of traditional stained glass, namely the use of copper …
Restoring Peace: Toward A Conversation Between The Just War And Reconciliation Traditions, Matthew J. Gaudet
Restoring Peace: Toward A Conversation Between The Just War And Reconciliation Traditions, Matthew J. Gaudet
General Engineering
Tragically, ethnic conflicts have become one of the hallmarks of the post-Cold War era. In response to this, two distinct traditions appear to be emerging. The first continues the classical just war tradition while the second represents a new "reconciliation tradition," built largely around questions of restorative justice in areas of social division. Our goal in this essay is to begin a rapprochement of these divergent traditions by asking the question, what does a restorative justice perspective offer to the just war tradition? We proceed in three stages: first, we survey the current state of the just war tradition; second, we …

Family Affairs Newsletter 2011-04-01, Zack Paakkonen
Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)
FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Religion in the Age of Enlightenment
Volume 2 of Religion in the Age of Enlightenment brings together the work of both established and up-and-coming scholars from a variety of fields of study and helps to solidify RAE's thematic and methodological scope. Looked at collectively, their work spans more than a century, from the late seventeenth to the early nineteenth centuries, and the varied topics and approaches demonstrate the rich possibilities for the study of religion during the Enlightenment.
