The Failure Of The Free World: Anarchy In Uncle Tom’S Cabin, Andy Cerrone
The Failure Of The Free World: Anarchy In Uncle Tom’S Cabin, Andy Cerrone
Interdisciplinary Perspectives: a Graduate Student Research Showcase
Harriett Beecher Stowe is often identified as an advocate for Christianity, woman's suffrage, autonomy, and the abolishment of slavery. However, inviting the reader to view her work through an anarchist lens, her magnum opus—Uncle Tom’s Cabin— offers the reader the opportunity to reconstruct her politics with immense implication. Critics regard Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin" as a sermon devised with the intention to inflate the nation with the righteous spirit of God, offering to the reader the opportunity to partake in the message of her religious vision. While Stowe's absolute faith in her Christian profile of God is present, she invariably …

One of the most exciting aspects of traveling is the ability to, for a short time, experience what life is like in a different part of the world. Whether traveling fifty miles away from home or to another continent, cultures, landscapes, and the many nuances of day-to-day life change. The beauty of travel comes from curiosity, exploration, and discovery. It’s that moment when your heart skips a beat and your mind fills with pure delight because you’ve just discovered something new about the world that you never knew before. Another part of the traveling experience is having a place to …

New Haven Dialect The Linguistic Impact Of Southern Italian Immigrants In Connecticut, Andrew Gargano
New Haven Dialect The Linguistic Impact Of Southern Italian Immigrants In Connecticut, Andrew Gargano
Honors Thesis and Capstone Projects
This thesis will focus primarily on the dialect which exists in New Haven, Connecticut. In order to identify the features specific to this dialect, the standard American English vernacular, General American, will first be outlined so that the distinct differences between the two can be clearly identified. In addition, this thesis will also attempt to explain the rationale behind what has caused the specific features of this dialect to occur. The main reason of this is believed to be the strong im-pact which Italian immigrants in the New Haven area have had on the language over time. Therefore, the characteristics …

Curated Exhibit Roadside Crosses And Memorials: Photo Essay By Gerald Moore, Laura J. Hall
Curated Exhibit Roadside Crosses And Memorials: Photo Essay By Gerald Moore, Laura J. Hall
Posters and Presentations
The Roadside Crosses and Memorials exhibit, curated by Laura J. Hall, MFA, featured a poignant photo essay by New Mexico artist Gerald Moore. The exhibit captured the memorials placed alongside highways and roads in remembrance of those who lost their lives in vehicular accidents. These "descansos," as they are called in New Mexico, represent the places where individuals were last alive, offering a powerful reflection on life, loss, and remembrance. Through photography, Moore documented the varied forms of these memorials, from simple wooden crosses to intricate handmade tributes, capturing both their artistic expression and their deep emotional resonance. April 28, …

The Death Of Music Videos?: An Analysis On The Effectiveness Of Music Videos As A Promotional Tool, Carmen Cheng
The Death Of Music Videos?: An Analysis On The Effectiveness Of Music Videos As A Promotional Tool, Carmen Cheng
Business and Economics Honors Papers
This research explored whether or not music videos remained an effective marketing tool for the music industry after the diffusion of the Internet in American culture. As a result of the transitions in media through which music videos were distributed, this project asked the following research questions: 1. What impact has the airing of music videos on MTV had on music sales? 2. What was the impact of music videos on sales when music videos moved from airing on television to being distributed over the Internet?

Conversations With West Memphis: A Sense Of Place And Heritage, Simon Rosewall Hosken
Student Theses and Dissertations
When Crittenden Memorial Hospital opened in 1951, it was the first hospital in Arkansas to be constructed with Hill-Burton funds. Using various sources I wanted to investigate why the hospital had been built in this small but growing city. Well into this research, however, circumstance unfolded that precluded access to hospital documents and records. As the analysis of the hospital ended I expanded the project to address the larger community of West Memphis. I investigated the impact of the hospital upon the locals' sense of place and heritage and sought to ascertain whether the racial tolerance implied by the newspaper …

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public
I often struggled to find an answer to the comment often leveled by visitors that, "they were so backward back then," or that, "we know so much more now." Getting across the fact to visitors that much of science, especially the basics of Newtonian physics and electromagnetic, has been understood at their elemental level for generations is sometimes a tough order of business. I found myself at times trying to explain Alessandro Volta's invention of the Voltaic battery in 1800 or the use of the Turtle during the American Revolution. Still, compared to the explosions over Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the …

The Media’S Influence Over Americans’ Views Of The United States Constitution As Evidenced By The Federalist Papers And Editorials Written Regarding The Modern Tea Party Movement, Kathryn E. Bell
Senior Honors Theses
America has been built by a series of monumental events. The press has been there to capture them all. The American mainstream media have indeed served as the rough draft for historical textbooks. The Declaration of Independence was reprinted in many newspapers on July 5, 1776. Evidence of this fact is on display at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. The media have been a present force in all aspects of American life since colonization. One of the most unique aspects of that force is the editorial page. The editorial page played a distinctive role during the crucial time of America’s …

The Economics Of The Atomic Bomb: Cost And Utilization, Jonathan M. Davis Mr.
Senior Honors Theses
Few moments in human history can be compared to the culmination of events that brought the atomic bomb into creation. It is incredible to contemplate that while a nation was fighting a two front war that spanned from Europe into the Pacific, that the United States was able to utilize the time, energy, brains, materials, manpower, and capital to complete a project in four years. That under any other circumstances would have taken greater than half a century to complete.
First, this thesis will discuss breakthroughs in research that led scientists to believe that the atomic weapons could be built, …

"'Ic Paet Secgan Maeg, Hwaet Ic Yrmpa Gebad'": Christian Scribes' Condemnation Of Blood Feud And Its Effect On Women In Anglo-Saxon Society, Tara Seate-Beck
Theses & Honors Papers
In preserving The Wife 's Lament, Wulf and Eadwacer, and Beowulf's battle scene with Grendel's mother, Christian poets and scribes preserved much more than just the literature of Anglo-Saxon England. They recorded the feminine voice, a rare perspective emerging from a society founded principally on the fundamentals of warfare and male dominance. The women's songs stand as testaments to the strife and discord women suffered as a consequence of their husbands' participation in blood feud. Their stories are not merely recounted as third person narratives, as much of the other extant texts from the period are; in the elegies, these …
