Heber Doust Curtis And The Island Universe Theory, Hyrum Austin Somers May 2011

Heber Doust Curtis And The Island Universe Theory, Hyrum Austin Somers

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

The beginning of the twentieth century was a time a great change and development within American astronomy. The period is rife with astronomers, both men and women, who advanced the discipline. However, few historians have looked at the lives of these astronomers. When an astronomer is chosen for closer study, they tend to be one who contributed to the astronomical discipline with a significant discovery. Unfortunately, those astronomers whose careers did not climax with discovery have a tendency to be forgotten by historians, even though their lives and research have affected our modern understanding. This thesis looks at one such …

High Water Mark: Suite For Jazz Octet, David Von Kampen May 2011

High Water Mark: Suite For Jazz Octet, David Von Kampen

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

High Water Mark is a five-movement suite for jazz octet, inspired by the poetry of David Shumate, from his collection of the same name.  The piece is scored for trumpet (doubling flugelhorn), alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, trombone, male vocalist (without words), piano, bass, and drums.  Although this instrumentation would generally be considered a small jazz group (as opposed to a big band), the piece is written in the spirit of a larger ensemble. The essence of small-group jazz is spontaneous creativity, interaction and improvisation.  Although improvised solos appear in every movement of this piece, it is better considered as a …

The Boys I Should Never Write About, Ashley Rivers May 2011

The Boys I Should Never Write About, Ashley Rivers

All Theses

This creative thesis is made up of twenty-three poems written in various styles, though most fall into two different categories, the short, sparse, Eigner-like poems or the long narrative poems. The poems demonstrate the theme of how women's sexuality fits into society and how that sexuality affects their lives. This creative thesis also demonstrates the author's ability to understand poetry and literature in general through the ability to create.

Zadie Smith's Aesthetics, Christina Cook May 2011

Zadie Smith's Aesthetics, Christina Cook

All Theses

In this thesis, I argue that Zadie Smith builds guidelines for reading within her novels On Beauty and White Teeth. These guidelines suggest that it is through reading aesthetically that we can fuse the neutral and the personal in order to come to a method of analysis that is critically fair. I suggest that Smith's desire for such methods is a result of her reductive critical reception in the wake of White Teeth's publication and that her texts provide interpretational cues that clarify her aesthetic approach; these cues are, more specifically, references to Elaine Scarry's "On Beauty and …

French Colonialist Journals And Morocco: A Decade Of Debate Before The Protectorate, Samantha Schmidt May 2011

French Colonialist Journals And Morocco: A Decade Of Debate Before The Protectorate, Samantha Schmidt

All Theses

After French colonization of Algeria in 1830, the expansion of France into additional colonies was a slow process. By 1900, few new colonies had been added to the French Empire and significant interest in colonization was limited to 10,000 men, the colonialists, who dedicated themselves to the expansion of the French Empire. These men came from the upper reaches of society had had a variety of reasons for desiring French colonialism. Whether for economic or nationalistic reasons, the colonialists formed formal groups, working both inside and outside of government to increase the size of the colonial empire. The journals of …

Thought and Verse: French Poetry in Conversation with French Existentialist Philosophy

Maxwell Edmonds

Faculty Sponsor: Karen de Bruin, French Language & Literature

What is the meaning of life?  Does God exist?  How can we live authentically and with purpose?  How can we conduct our day to day lives, while faced with our own mortality?  These are several of the principle themes focused upon within existentialist philosophy, the philosophy of existing as a mortal human being.

I chose to study existentialist philosophy through the lens of one of my other interests: French poetry.  This combination has allowed me to approach both …

The Implications Of Merleau-Ponty For The Human Sciences, Ryan Marcotte

Senior Honors Projects

The Implications of Merleau-Ponty for the Human Sciences Ryan Marcotte Cobb Faculty Sponsor: Galen Johnson, Philosophy The American Anthropology Association (AAA) made headlines in November 2010 due to a controversial change in their 'Long-Range Plan.' The revised AAA mission statement omits all mention of the word 'science' and this omission has sparked a fierce debate within the anthropology community. The debate reveals that the study of social phenomena can be approached from two competing points of view – a scientific and a non-scientific perspective.  This project is concerned with the historical and intellectual developments that led to this competition between …

Love: A Biological, Psychological And Philosophical Study, Heather M. Chapman May 2011

Love: A Biological, Psychological And Philosophical Study, Heather M. Chapman

Senior Honors Projects

The concept of love has been an eternally elusive subject. It is a definition and meaning that philosophers, psychologists, and biologists have been seeking since the beginning of time. Wars have been waged and fought over it, while friendships have been initiated and have ended because of this idea. But what exactly is love, and why is it important to define this enigma?

In order to help define this idea of love, several books and numerous research articles were consulted, and interviews were conducted with faculty of The University of Rhode Island. Dr. Nasser Zawia was interviewed, in order to …

Cultural Competency: A Student’s Examination of Haiti

Heidi Dotson

Faculty Sponsor: Gail Faris, Women’s Center

On January 12, 2010 the world watched as a 7.0 milliwatt earthquake brought Haiti to her knees. It did not take long before the international community had arrived to help Haiti rise from the rubble. On October 21, 2010 the Center for Disease Control confirmed a cholera epidemic in Haiti. One year after the earthquake, only five percent of the rubble had been cleared, and more than one million Haitians were living as refugees in “temporary” tents. Watching all of this from my “temporary” beach …

Lived Philosophy: How We Define Ourselves And Our Lives, Molly A. Bandola May 2011

Lived Philosophy: How We Define Ourselves And Our Lives, Molly A. Bandola

Senior Honors Projects

As a student about to graduate with a degree in philosophy, the task of merging both the intellectual and practical aspects of the discipline necessarily emerges from the past four years of my study. As I myself am at the precipice of a whole new stage of life, I find myself drawn to questions of reflection and purpose. Throughout the history of philosophy, questions arising around the concept of death and one’s own mortality are ever-present and I am drawn to the stories that individuals have to share of their experiences surrounding death and dying. How is it that one …

How to Excel in the Fashion Industry

Elizabeth Weaver

Faculty Sponsor: Claire Lacoste Kapstein, Textiles, Merchandising and Design

Co-sponsor:  Art Mead, Economics

The fashion industry is most often thought of as a glamorous business filled with successful designers and supermodels.  For fashion students, however, the industry they seek to enter upon graduation is drastically different.  Students entering merchandising and retailing related careers will spend a large portion of their time analyzing data and working in Microsoft Excel.
As a graduating senior with a dual degree in Textiles, Merchandising and Design and Economics, I wanted to create a project that could …

What We Dreamed To Become, Caroline Clark Moore May 2011

What We Dreamed To Become, Caroline Clark Moore

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

For my honors thesis, I created a documentary film about my experience in India this past summer.

What We Dreamed To Become depicts the journey of two people of the same African heritage: Dr. Pashington Obeng, an African Studies Professor at Harvard, and a native of Ghana; and a young Siddi boy named Budhesab Hussein.

The Siddis are an Indian ethnic group descended from African slaves. Pash has worked extensively with the Siddis for more than a decade, and hopes to create self-sufficiency within the group.

The young Budhesab has severe vision problems, and happens to join Pash on a …

A Self-Help Guide To Future Success, Naresh Vissa

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

This dissertation takes the form of an eleven-part podcast series titled, “A Self-Help Guide to Future Success.” The radio series relates to the topic of personal success.

Success comes in all sorts of forms – financial, social, ethical, personal: it cannot be defined. In today’s environment, people find themselves confused more than ever before.

As a senior in college who is about to graduate in less than four weeks, I find it mind-boggling how little students have thought about their futures. Furthermore, it is a shame that so many people fail to recognize the current society and conditions surrounding them. …

Implementing A Discernment Phase For Those Nominated In The Shepherd Selection Process At The Cinco Ranch Church Of Christ, Aaron Walling

Doctor of Ministry Theses and Dissertations

This doctor of ministry thesis presents the results of a project that implemented a discernment phase for those nominated in the shepherd selection process at the Cinco Ranch Church of Christ. Occurring in the fall of 2010, this project involved nominees in a series of six one-hour, thirty-minute sessions designed to establish the theological foundations for shepherding and to explore its practical expression at Cinco Ranch. For the theological component, this project primarily utilized Ephesians 4:11-16, and for the practical side, it incorporated group interactions with those serving as shepherds along with the review of guiding leadership documents. The project‟s …

The Contrasting Image Of Italian Women Under Fascism In The 1930’S, Jennifer Linda Monti May 2011

The Contrasting Image Of Italian Women Under Fascism In The 1930’S, Jennifer Linda Monti

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

The Fascist regime in Italy lasted twenty years, deeply influencing the Italian population and the Italian culture during that time period. Although Fascism tried to control the public and private life of Italians, it was unsuccessful because of the strong presence of the Catholic Church and because ofItaly’s difficult history prior to unification. What the regime did accomplish, however, was the quasi complete consent of the masses because of the numerous activities and organizations it created for them. A particular group on which Fascism focused was women, understanding how central their role was within the family, and wanting to gain …

Reinventing The Classical Recital: Examining The Connections Between Performer And Audience, Kimberly R. Dinicola May 2011

Reinventing The Classical Recital: Examining The Connections Between Performer And Audience, Kimberly R. Dinicola

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Reinventing the Classical Recital: Examining the Connections Between Performer and Audience was a project intended to create a dialogue between the performer and audience about the kind of experience a classical recital typically is versus what it can be. Recitals given at Syracuse University, and in the classical music community in general, generally have strict guidelines for the amount, type, and quality of music to be performed. Certain composers or types of song are considered more appropriate than others, depending on the instrument and length of the recital. In creating a recital to evaluate in what ways the performer can …

The purpose of the project was to create a piece of music that transcended musical genres and told the story of my coming of age in the first decade of the 21st century. The work featured both original text and original music and culminates in a live performance of the work.

I wanted to tell a story. More specifically, I wanted to tell my story. The story of coming of age in the 21st century. I was 11 in the year 2000, I was 21 in 2010. My formative years correlate directly with the formative years of the 21st century. …

“The Lotus Flower” is an animation based on the epic story of Shimchong, a girl who overcomes her poverty due to her devotion to her family and later marries into the royal family. This Cinderella story is a famous Korean tale that has been told and re-told for centuries. By bringing this story to an international audience, I hope to bring at least a small awareness of the cultural and historical value of Korea.

The script was adapted and written by me, taking various versions of the folktale into account as well as putting my own details and embellishments to …

American Political Satire: The 20th Century Onward, Michael Contino May 2011

American Political Satire: The 20th Century Onward, Michael Contino

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Political satire is an implied freedom enumerated in the first amendment of the Constitution. As a form of political speech, it falls under the category of the most protected form of expression. Now that I’ve got your attention, I can go ahead with the rest of my project. This is a journalistic study of the people who used their freedom of speech to openly criticize the government. More specifically, it’s about the people who openly criticized the government and then became famous for it. Of course, there’s many ways to criticize, many platforms, many audiences, many influences as well.

What …

You Are What You Eat: Photographic Portrait Series, Danielle Carrick May 2011

You Are What You Eat: Photographic Portrait Series, Danielle Carrick

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

You Are What You Eat is a photographic portrait series drawing visual parallels between food and people. Each portrait consists of not one, but two separate images – a person and the food they resemble. The series pays homage to portrait photography and food photography but is defined by neither.

Each pairing is based on physical attributes of the food subject and human model. For example, the freckled face of a man is side by side with a sesame seed bagel, the pattern and coloring of both mirroring each other. Likewise, a tall, thin girl is perfectly posed to resemble …

Partings—A Short Film, Alicia Atterberry May 2011

Partings—A Short Film, Alicia Atterberry

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Love is a powerful force, but the inability to give love to the fullest extent can be an influential force as well. For my capstone, Partings—a Short Film, I wrote a short film centered on the theme of unreciprocated love. Within the context of the film, unreciprocated love means not being able to return the sincerity or the full extent of the love felt, and my short film shows the consequences of a friendship that lacks mutually-expressed love.

Partings, depicts the end of a friendship between two characters: Frank and Angie. Frank is an independent, young woman; she …
