Persistent Revolutions In Colombia And Peru: A Comparative Analysis, Brandon Huson May 2011

Persistent Revolutions In Colombia And Peru: A Comparative Analysis, Brandon Huson

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis performs a comparative analysis of rural-based revolutionary movements in Latin America. The movements that are compared are the FARC, originating in Colombia, and the Shining Path, which emerged from the highlands of Peru. The comparison is meant to serve as a test for what variables are predictive of revolutionary success. Since these movements differ in their success in establishing permanent political, social and military movements in their countries over time, their dichotomous outcome can be used to point toward variables that warrant further consideration. Comparison of revolutionary movement makes sense in this case due to the similarities between …

Place Construction, Identity, And Capital Investment: An Investigation Of Two Tourist Landscapes In Michigan, Andrew Stawarski May 2011

Place Construction, Identity, And Capital Investment: An Investigation Of Two Tourist Landscapes In Michigan, Andrew Stawarski

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Tourist communities exist all over the world. They are areas that are focused on tourism and are often tailored to resemble specific regions or themes to better achieve capital gain. In this study, two cities in Michigan are examined to better understand how the cultural landscapes are experienced and what practices are employed throughout the landscape. Specifically, this thesis investigates the spatial practices that are involved in re-creating and re-presenting ―themed‖ landscapes. Another question analyzed is whether the ―themed‖ landscapes reflect the resident‘s daily lives and/or their histories. This thesis examines the two Michigan cities of Gaylord and Frankenmuth, re-presenting …

Some Thoughts On The Relation Of Aesthetics And Ethics: A Possible Christian Perspective, Peter Santandreu May 2011

Some Thoughts On The Relation Of Aesthetics And Ethics: A Possible Christian Perspective, Peter Santandreu

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"One of, if not the, major questions that I have been working on recently is the relation between aesthetics and ethics. In question form, it reads something like this: Can, and if so to what extent, aesthetics be said to be ethically evaluated or ethically informative? In some sense this question has been on the table (at least in the west) since the time of Plato. Such a question is not an easy one to answer given various factors that must be taken into account. For my purpose here, …

The Power Of A Hymn, Jennifer Sadallah May 2011

The Power Of A Hymn, Jennifer Sadallah

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"Growing up I attended a Roman Catholic parish that was relatively small. I knew the people that went to my parish my whole life. The comfortable atmosphere at my church was created from a lifetime of Sundays. When I came to Fisher my freshman year, I would see familiar faces at mass in Murphy Chapel. Upon graduating from Fisher in May of 2010, I decided to take an internship at Disney World in Orlando. For the first time I was in an unfamiliar place where I didn‟t know a …

What Is Faith?, Uwa Oduwa May 2011

What Is Faith?, Uwa Oduwa

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"Faith, like religion, is not impossible to define, but somewhat difficult to group into a single fixed description. There are no laws that require a person or a group of people to have faith; therefore faith comes from our own personal choices and happenings in life. Based on my own experiences in life so far, faith has been a pivotal part when it comes to my outlook on life and my trust in others as well as in myself. Faith also plays a leading role when it comes to …

A Liberating Intent: The American Civics Curriculum In Illinois High Schools And The Development Of A Critically Constructive Citizenry, Gustavo David Albear May 2011

A Liberating Intent: The American Civics Curriculum In Illinois High Schools And The Development Of A Critically Constructive Citizenry, Gustavo David Albear

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Civics education and constructive criticality are not usually found within the same curriculum. In America the two concepts tend to be considered as antithetical in content and practice. Students and teachers do not approach education about the citizen‘s responsibilities with great necessity or urgency, and when they do approach the subject it is from the perspective of inherent rights that should not be questioned, since they are by birth granted, albeit only to some. The idea of criticality is also not considered to be part of the developmental need of a citizen, since the overall sentiment associated with it is …

The Impact Of Training On Music Therapists’ Songwriting Knowledge, Self-Efficacy, And Behavior, Tracy G. Richardson

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Songwriting has been used as an effective intervention for persons with a wide range of therapeutic needs. However, a literature search revealed that songwriting is underrepresented in the music therapy research literature, indicating that music therapists may perceive they do not have the abilities to effectively use songwriting interventions in therapy sessions. The purposes of this study were: (a) to investigate the impact of a songwriting training session on the songwriting knowledge, self-efficacy, and behavior of music therapists; (b) to evaluate the songwriting training program; and (c) to explore the impact of the training on perceived barriers and clinical practice. …

Randall Thompson's Requiem: A Text Setting Analysis And Recommendations For Performance, Zachary J. Vreeman May 2011

Randall Thompson's Requiem: A Text Setting Analysis And Recommendations For Performance, Zachary J. Vreeman

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

Randall Thompson is a well-known composer of some of the most familiar and accessible American choral music of the twentieth century. His conservative harmonic language and idiomatic writing for voices has made many of his works popular with both amateur and academic choirs. They are particularly admired for their sensitive setting of English text.

In 1958, Thompson wrote a large work titled Requiem, inspired by a young terminally-ill choral conductor, and commissioned by the University of California. Though positively reviewed, it received only a handful of performances, and is little known today outside of a few extracted movements. The …

A Comparison Of Viola Strings With Harmonic Frequency Analysis, Jonathan Paul Crosmer May 2011

A Comparison Of Viola Strings With Harmonic Frequency Analysis, Jonathan Paul Crosmer

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

Many brands of viola strings are available today. Different materials used result in varying timbres. This study compares 12 popular brands of strings. Each set of strings was tested and recorded on four violas. We allowed two weeks after installation for each string set to settle, and we were careful to control as many factors as possible in the recording process. The recordings include individual note samples of 8 seconds each and performances of the prelude from the first Bach cello suite. For this study, we recorded 576 note samples and 24 performances of the Bach prelude. Spectrum analysis of …

Fool For Love, Judy Zanin May 2011

Fool For Love, Judy Zanin

Drama - Dissertations

This document is intended to describe the directorial process of producing Fool for Love, by Sam Shepard, from selecting a play, choosing a cast, working with designers and production staff, to directing. Central to the process is the development of effective communication between director and staff involved in the production, including how to rationalize directorial decisions and to succinctly present that information. It is the director who is responsible for the concept of the show's thematic material to be encompassed on the stage as a whole. Above all, the playwright and the script are what should be attended to, and …

The Many Faces Of Marie Antoinette: Rewriting The Portrait Of A Queen Through The Enlightenment, Political Pornography And The French Revolution, Brittany A. Mclaren May 2011

The Many Faces Of Marie Antoinette: Rewriting The Portrait Of A Queen Through The Enlightenment, Political Pornography And The French Revolution, Brittany A. Mclaren

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Early modern representations of Marie Antoinette, the infamous Queen of France, show a very confused picture. One hand, she has been portrayed as the woman who caused the French Revolution of 1789, squandering her kingdom’s fortunes on outrageous clothing and gambling. However, she has also been portrayed as the Revolution’s martyr, her death symbolizing the end of Old Regime absolutism in France. With so many contrasting views, how can we determine which shows the most accurate portrait of the ill-fated queen? I argue that no singular representation depicts Marie Antoinette as she truly was. Secondly, I argue that while Marie …

The Mosque As A Political, Economic, And Social Institution 622 – Present, Hope Collins May 2011

The Mosque As A Political, Economic, And Social Institution 622 – Present, Hope Collins

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 the Communist “threat” that plagued the West throughout the latter half of the 20th century all but disappeared and was replaced with the “threat” of Islam. Prior to 9/11 Islam was a largely misunderstood religion and, despite its emergence as a media sensation in the past decade or so, very little headway has been made to better understand it.

Often times this misunderstanding has led to latent, and at times manifest, anti-Islamic sentiment and in many cases this anti-Islamic sentiment has been directed at the mosque as the physical embodiment of …

Beyond Change-Overcoming The Barriers To Small Rural Church Revitalization, Allen F. Wachter May 2011

Beyond Change-Overcoming The Barriers To Small Rural Church Revitalization, Allen F. Wachter

Doctor of Ministry

Many of the rural churches of the Free Methodist Denomination in the Northeast region of the United States have experienced substantial stagnation and/or decline of their attendance rates over the past five years. This begs the questions, "What is preventing these churches from being revitalized so they too can be used as vessels to grow the Kingdom of God?" Though many obstructions to kingdom growth1 exist, this study focuses on the following five barriers: resistance to change, under-utilization of spiritual gifts, relational dysfunction, apathy, and lack of love. The source of these barriers was discovered through personal observation and experience …

Race And Cricket: The West Indies And England At Lord's, 1963, Harold Richard Herbert Harris May 2011

Race And Cricket: The West Indies And England At Lord's, 1963, Harold Richard Herbert Harris

History Dissertations - Archive

Cricket became a sport in which there was a clear separation based on race and class; and these distinctions initially determined function within the sport. In England, where the distinction was based mostly on class, the aristocracy, who initially enjoyed watching their workers at play, became involved in playing the game, and determined roles aligned to class. In the West Indies, the distinction was determined by race. However, racial mixing blurred these demarcations and soon the underclass began to encroach onto a space that the sport had created for them. In due course, function within the sport faded into insignificance …
