When Vocations Collide_ A Study Of The Process Of Developing A Military Mobilization Agreement, Mark Moreno May 2011

When Vocations Collide_ A Study Of The Process Of Developing A Military Mobilization Agreement, Mark Moreno

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

The ministry of reserve military chaplains has an impact on their civilian ministry setting, the church in particular. Questionnaires were administered and interviews conducted with reserve chaplains and congregations that have already experienced a mobilization and had a mobilization agreement. Findings reveal that the process of developing a mobilization agreement is indicative of the healthy relationship between the reserve chaplain and their congregation.

The Glossa Ordinaria On Romans, Michael Scott Woodward May 2011

The Glossa Ordinaria On Romans, Michael Scott Woodward

TEAMS Commentary Series

"The Gloss on Romans is a collection of sources from many periods and places, which accounts for its inconsistencies. And this is what gives the Gloss much of its charm. . . . The twelfth century was an age of gathering sources and commentaries, in theology (Lombard's Sentences), canon law (Gratian's Decretum), and biblical studies (the Glossa ordinaria). Education began to flourish into what would become universities, where the master's role was to elucidate traditional, authoritative texts. And chief among these was the Bible, not standing alone but with the accompanying Gloss." - from the introduction

The Legend Of The Almo Massacre: Ostensive Action And The Commodification Of Folklore, Jonathan A. Floyd May 2011

The Legend Of The Almo Massacre: Ostensive Action And The Commodification Of Folklore, Jonathan A. Floyd

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The following thesis is based on the role a legend plays in establishing and influencing a sense of identity and reality within a community and area, in this case the legend is of a massacre occurring in Almo, Idaho in the early 1860s. I found this legend of the Almo massacre while looking for an excuse to rock climb in the nearby City of Rocks National Reserve. I explored the Almo legend through interviews, historical documents and books and came to think that the Almo legend played a critical role in defining a sense of local reality for Almo, Idaho, …

(Don't) Stop Playing That Game: A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Video Game Addiction Stereotype, Chet Daniel Breaux May 2011

(Don't) Stop Playing That Game: A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Video Game Addiction Stereotype, Chet Daniel Breaux

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The growing popularity of game addiction discourse has necessitated study of how video game critics rhetorically construct addiction. In the following thesis, I analyze contemporary examples of texts that link game addiction to drug abuse. I use Robert Cover’s analysis of how game addiction stereotypes form in conjunction with Aristotle’s rhetorical principles to isolate the persuasive appeals used by authors to rhetorically construct game play as addictive. These addiction arguments, however, are rooted in a larger historical context, and I present examples of game guidebooks and comic books published in the late 1970s and early 1980s to illustrate their rhetorical …

Anglofile, Kaci Carpenter

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Anny Sterling is stuck. After a freak accident that left her father disabled and without a steady income, she returned home after one semester of college to help pay the bills while her older sister Emily fled to Europe to spend her time chasing dark-haired men named Franco and Pablo. At twenty-five, Anny now spends her days at the local insurance agency running errands for other people and reciting the alphabet song in the file room. There’s little to no hope for advancement as she is short the required college hours to qualify for even an associate degree, but she …

Prohibition And The Effects On Social History In The Tri-State Area, Grant Laforge May 2011

Prohibition And The Effects On Social History In The Tri-State Area, Grant Laforge

Theory and Practice: HIST430

Today we as citizens of this country believe that rights and liberties rule the air. On January 16th, 1919 however, an amendment for prohibition was ratified, making alcohol consumption illegal. The whole country was affected by this amendment. In the East there were many organized crime related incidents related to prohibition. Other parts of the US that were affected by this amendment and bootlegging were prominent.

Wrench Yourself

Faculty Sponsor: Cheryl Foster, Philosophy

Wrench Yourself was originally conceived as a three part project. Part one, learning about the writing life, came to fruition through reading books on the craft. Part two involved producing a body of original, creative, non-fiction. Part three culminated in binding the polished pieces of writing in limited production, hand made, leather bound books.

At the completion of this project I have created a hand-made book containing two essays. The first essay, Driven to Distraction, focuses on inattention behind the wheel and the pervasiveness of multi-tasking as a societal norm. …

The importance of quality healthcare is a personal matter for each and every individual across the globe. We cannot go a day without considering the impact that proper health through good nutrition, disease prevention, and access to care has on our bodies. The topic of medical care has interested me for many years and has lead me to the major and position that I am in today. As a senior, majoring in Biology with a pre-medical focus, I will begin the …

Finding The Beat In Music: Using Adaptive Oscillators, Kate M. Burgers May 2011

Finding The Beat In Music: Using Adaptive Oscillators, Kate M. Burgers

HMC Senior Theses

The task of finding the beat in music is simple for most people, but surprisingly difficult to replicate in a robot. Progress in this problem has been made using various preprocessing techniques (Hitz 2008; Tomic and Janata 2008). However, a real-time method is not yet available. Methods using a class of oscillators called relay relaxation oscillators are promising. In particular, systems of forced Hopf oscillators (Large 2000; Righetti et al. 2006) have been used with relative success. This work describes current methods of beat tracking and develops a new method that incorporates the best ideas from each existing method and …

Do Marketing Media Have Life Cycles? The Case Of Product Placement In Movies, Ekaterina Karniouchina, Can Uslay, Grigori Erenburg May 2011

Do Marketing Media Have Life Cycles? The Case Of Product Placement In Movies, Ekaterina Karniouchina, Can Uslay, Grigori Erenburg

Business Faculty Articles and Research

This article examines the economic worth of product placement in movies over a time span of 40 years (1968-2007). The authors find an inverted U-shaped relationship between the year of the movie release and the returns associated with product placements. In addition, a similar inverted U-shaped relationship characterizes the economic worth of tie-in campaigns associated with product placements. These findings are consistent with the habituation tedium theory used to explain the inverted U-shaped pattern in response to novel advertisements and suggest that the same mechanism could be influencing the response to an entire marketing medium. Overall, the results reinforce the …

Angelu Demonai, Caitlin Leigh Halvorson May 2011

Angelu Demonai, Caitlin Leigh Halvorson

Senior Theses

This project has been a long time in the making. The concept originated several years ago, and what was once just the shadow of a character has morphed into the story you see today - the makings of a graphic novel about one rock musician’s quest to discover herself, and save the worlds in the process.

Of course, you will only see a small part of the story. What is included in this thesis project is only the first volume of several (four, I expect). And while the journey is not yet completed, the ride has been thrilling so far. …
