Primetime Crime And Its Influence On Public Perception, Katherine E. Stott May 2011

Primetime Crime And Its Influence On Public Perception, Katherine E. Stott

Senior Honors Projects

Since the television became more readily available to the American public in the 1940s and 50s, television shows have captured the attention of the nation. While television programs and televisions themselves have changed since then there are a few constants, one being the continued popularity of crime shows. From Sunday to Saturday during ‘prime time’ on just the four major networks, there are over fifteen hours of crime programming. The shows aim to entertain, leading them to show many inaccuracies about crime and the justice system in America. Studies have shown that most white Americans receive their information about crime …

Navigating The Fourth Dimension: Nonlinear Narratives In Film, Literature, And Television, Jason R. Boulanger May 2011

Navigating The Fourth Dimension: Nonlinear Narratives In Film, Literature, And Television, Jason R. Boulanger

Senior Honors Projects

Time is often considered the fourth dimension due to the fact that nothing can exist outside the confines of time. Since time is so intrinsic to the very nature of being in the world, creators of film, literature, and television, which are reflective of life, must at least implicitly confront concepts of time and temporality within their work. The intangibility of time presents many difficulties but also a great number of opportunities in accurately portraying its true function within the world.

Many literary works, films, and television programs directly confront concepts of time. Each medium with its own benefits and …

The Perpetual Creation and Provocation of the Self

Krista D’Amico

Faculty Sponsor: Stephen Barber, English

This project consists of four related parts. The first part is a critical and creative work of prose in which I converse with the thought of two philosophers, namely Spinoza and Gilles Deleuze. This conversation enables me to present my own thought and subjectivity in relationship to a very important aspect of my life: music-making. The second part of my project is a critical essay in which I contemplate the work of another artist, Virginia Woolf, and the way that her credo Three Guineas (1938) …

Our Path To God, Jodi White May 2011

Our Path To God, Jodi White

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"My name is Jody White. I believe in God. I always have, even though I was not baptized until I was an adult. I have vivid memories of the “Our Father” engraved on a silver charm and literally glued to my bed like a child‟s sticker. I thought it was so cool and important. I did not understand what it really meant at the time, but I remember always being proud that I “knew” the prayer."

Enigma Of The Shroud Of Turin, Justin A. Tubiolo May 2011

Enigma Of The Shroud Of Turin, Justin A. Tubiolo

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"There is an unbroken historical record of the Shroud from fourteenth-century France to its current residence in Turin, Italy. Although its whereabouts before that time are unknown, circumstantial evidence has been used to try relating it to earlier contexts in the Middle East (Maher, p.67), including the Gospel accounts. Church authorities challenged the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin from the time of its earliest known historical appearance. French Bishop Pierre d‟Arcis complained in 1389 to Pope Clement VII, during the Avignon Papacy, about something the bishop considered to …

Remembering Marshall Mcluhan (1911-1980): The Medium And The Message, Tim Madigan

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"A few years back Diane Lucas, then the campus archivist as well as a member of the Lavery Library staff, mentioned to me in passing that Marshall McLuhan's daughter Stephanie had been doing research in our archives on her father's work. Marshall McLuhan?! I was astonished to hear that name mentioned, as it had been years since I'd thought about the communications guru who had coined the phrases "the Global Village" and "the Medium is the Message." But more to the point, what possible connection did he have with …

The Reciprocal Reshaping Of The American Dream And American Religion, Samir S. Gupte May 2011

The Reciprocal Reshaping Of The American Dream And American Religion, Samir S. Gupte

Master of Liberal Studies Theses

Religion has played an important role in the creation and dissemination of the idea now called the American Dream since the discovery of the North American continent. The first iteration of the American Dream manifested in the sixteenth century as a Return to Eden. The next phase was best represented by the Puritan quest for freedom of religion. In the eighteenth century, independence was the object of the American Dream. This was supported by the First Great Awakening. The nineteenth century American Dream can be characterized as opportunity as evidenced by immigration, westward migration, and the growth of commercial enterprise. …
