Bleach, Kim E. Alexander Jr. May 2011

Bleach, Kim E. Alexander Jr.

CGU MFA Theses

The work in this exhibition investigates the unique potential for drawing to articulate the ideas and attitudes of architecture and objects. Accepting drawing as operating in conceptual space, I explore experimental loops within the visual logic of that territory. The work asserts the material fact of drawing and its connection to forms of fabrication in other materials like wood, paint, metal, and plastic. Like painting and sculpting, the drawings occupy an intangible state between objects and ideas. I embrace this irresolution. Please see Download button in top right corner for the full statement.

Andre Goeritz Mfa Thesis Statement, Andre M. Goeritz May 2011

Andre Goeritz Mfa Thesis Statement, Andre M. Goeritz

CGU MFA Theses

I strive to make objects of no complicity--arranging smaller parts to create larger forms, or allowing the combination of parts to allude to narratives without linearity, foreshadowing, point of entry, point of attack, conflict, context, or catharsis; a state of sustained stillness until equilibrium is no longer a desired result, at which point the parts of the whole can be dismantled, reconfigured, made anew. I think about words, rhythm, inflection, resonance or timbre, vocal dissonance, dismembered disjointed utterances, and repetition--somatic impulses guided by intent. Intention translates into action--an act of will, a willful act, an act of willful intent--a marker …

Written In Stone, Michelle Day May 2011

Written In Stone, Michelle Day

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

John Peter Zenger, Elijah Lovejoy, Gordon Parks, Walter Winchell and Katherine Graham were five famous journalists who impacted the industry in enduring ways. Whether writers, publishers or a photographer, these storytellers have had their stories told countless times over many years. This project seeks to combine journalistic research with a personal experiment in creative writing. Each chapter consists of story about one of the journalists, told either from their own perspective or someone else’s. Each piece should be considered historical fiction — not nonfiction — but the overall message and basic facts are true. Each story is different but reflects …

Back From Port-Au-Prince, Kerry L. Rodgers May 2011

Back From Port-Au-Prince, Kerry L. Rodgers

CGU MFA Theses

In this body of work I aim to bring the possibility of intimacy and empathy to a city reeling from recent devastation. Before last year’s earthquake, Port-Au-Prince had been famous for its bright splashy colors; vibrant shades coated the homes, shacks, buildings and buses. But everything lost its color when it crumbled. The ubiquitous gray rubble is a constant reminder of the immense human suffering that the quake set into motion: death, displacement, and disease. Keys To Unlocking Creative Potential: The Expressive Path To Personal Growth, Marta D. Ockuly

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

An experiential journey into personal growth and creative expression is, by nature, transformational.  Undertaken in a public platform using social media (Twitter and blogging) it reveals powerful potential as a teaching and mentoring tool for inspiring creative action around the world.  This project was designed to blend my joys and passions for tweeting positive inspiration and encouragement, sharing my readings and research related to creativity, exploring expressive art, activating creative potential with joy, collecting and sharing quotes, coaching positive change and creative action, and raising awareness of everyday creativity into a learning pathway which could be accessed by anyone using …

"Speak Softly But Carry A Big Can Of Paint" - Banksy, Wall And Piece: Street Art As Radical Political Activism, Rosemary Reedy Booth

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

The English street artist Banksy best describes the power of street art as radical activism through his assertion in his 2003 collection, Banging Yallr Head Against a Brick Wall, that "[ It] is one of the few tools you have if you have almost nothing. And even if you don't come up with a picture to cure world poverty you can make someone smile while they're having a piss" ( II ). Banksy is notorious because he is a prolific street artist yet his identity has never been revealed. He plays a prominent role in the current international street art …

The Parables Of The Kingdom Of God, Danielle Brin Reist May 2011

The Parables Of The Kingdom Of God, Danielle Brin Reist

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

This paper will be yet another attempt to understand what the historical Jesus may have meant when he spoke of the Kingdom. In particular I will be examining parables attributed to Jesus that are relevant to the idea of Kingdom. However before any exegesis can begin it is important to understand the history of scholarship on the topic. In the brief survey of a variety of opinions that have been put forth that follows my aim is to not only review the history of scholarship on the subject, but also illustrate the variety of issues one encounters when attempting to …

Ending The Cycle Of Child Sex Slavery In Cambodia, Carmen Marie Murphy May 2011

Ending The Cycle Of Child Sex Slavery In Cambodia, Carmen Marie Murphy

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

As I had the chance to visit Cambodia and talk to actual victims, I planned to use ethnographic methodology to incorporate testimonies and personal interaction to supplement the lack of specific research in this field. I believed ethnography would be an effective method as it takes a holistic perspective of all contributing factors, such as history, geography, religion, government, and population. My plan was to conduct an ethnographic case study of Cambodia using current scholarship on these areas, and then contribute my personal experiences. To ensure quality control and unbiased research. I used contextualization by conducting my research in Cambodia, …

We Can Grow It: Reporting On Women In Agriculture In India, Belize And The U.S., Colleen Stewart May 2011

We Can Grow It: Reporting On Women In Agriculture In India, Belize And The U.S., Colleen Stewart

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Women produce more than half of the world’s food, according to the U.N. Food and Agricultural Organization. This aligns with the Chinese proverb– “Women Hold up Half the Sky.” As the role of women in agriculture increases in the developed and developing world, female economic activity in agriculture serves as a beacon for poverty reduction, increased food security, and environmental sustainability. In the United States, there has been a 30-percent increase in the number of female-run farms in the U.S. since 2002 and women, now the largest “minority” group in agriculture in the U.S., operate approximately 300,000 farms throughout the …

A Series Of Un-Breathable Events: The Clean Air Act And The Transformation Of Environmentalism In American Society, Chelsea Kasten May 2011

A Series Of Un-Breathable Events: The Clean Air Act And The Transformation Of Environmentalism In American Society, Chelsea Kasten

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Clean air legislation was first passed in the United States by Congress in 1955 and has since been amended in 1963, 1965, 1967, 1970, 1977 and 1990. The Clean Air Act was created to ensure that Americans were not being unnecessarily exposed to harmful air pollutants. It is the legislation that allows for the regulation and control over air pollutants and the sources that release those air pollutants. This legislation is important to the maintenance and improvement of air quality in the United States. Without the Clean Air Act to regulate pollutant sources, the air could be toxic to vulnerable …

Children’S Stories From Across Borders: A Contrastive Analysis Of Children’S Folk Tales In Ecuador And Appalachia, Teresa Cox May 2011

Children’S Stories From Across Borders: A Contrastive Analysis Of Children’S Folk Tales In Ecuador And Appalachia, Teresa Cox

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The Appalachian region of the United States encompasses fourteen states, ranging from southern New York to northern Mississippi. Despite the thousands of miles separating the mountain region of Appalachia within the United States and the small, diverse country of Ecuador, the two areas are decisively similar in their values. These values are clearly demonstrated in the traditional children’s folk stories, passed down orally between generations, in both Ecuador and Appalachia. Having surveyed anonymous subjects in both areas, four stories from Ecuador and seven stories from Appalachia have been collected at random in order to draw on comparison and contrast of …

Once On The Dark Continent, Katrina Alexandria Bidwell

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Set in the fictional village of Buguta in post-genocide Rwanda, Once on the Dark Continent follows the experiences of a young doctor working for the Doctors Without Borders Program. Dr. Erica Davis unwittingly finds herself in a country where the past has continued to repeat itself a decade after a devastating civil war, unbeknownst to most of the outside world. Their history isn’t the only thing plaguing the villagers like a parasite: Erica’s careful attention to the patients at the Buguta clinic leads her to diagnose them with toxoplasmosis, a revelation that has the potential to begin solving the myriad …
