The Reconstruction Of Historical Buildings: A Visitor And Historical Site Study, Alyssa Holland

Theses and Dissertations

The reconstruction of historical buildings has been debated by preservationists, archeologists and historians, both with each other and within their own fields. But no matter how intensely scholars discuss and disagree on the subject, professionals at historic sites still continue to reconstruct historical buildings. The questions surrounding historical reconstruction include: is it ethical to reconstruct historical buildings? Is it worthwhile to reconstruct historical buildings for the benefit of the general public? I surveyed historical site workers from across the country and visitors from Red Hill National Memorial, the last home of Patrick Henry. From the survey, visitors seem to remember …

Revisiting "Hapworth": The Catharsis Of Buddy Glass, Brian Mctague

Theses and Dissertations

J.D. Salinger's "Hapworth 16, 1924," his last published work, is notorious for the initial critical silence it received, as well as the subsequent general consensus that it was a text to revile if not avoid. This thesis proposes that while "Hapworth" is a difficult and perplexing piece, there is a good deal about it that deserves if not outright praise, then a close critical re-examination. Assuming the "author" of the story is not the seven-year-old version of "A Perfect Day for Bananafish" suicide Seymour Glass, as the story purports, but his grieving younger brother Buddy, who has spent the years …

My Senior Voice Recital/Honors Thesis is called "The Whimsy and Woe of Youth." Each song in the repertoire can fit into this theme. The voice recital counted as both a Senior Voice Program requirement and the Honors College Thesis requirement.

The recital began with "Ei! Wie schmeckt der Coffee suBe" from Schweigt stille, plaudert nicht (Coffee Cantata) written by Johann Sebastian Bach, represented the Baroque era. Next, two lieder composed by Hugo Wolf were performed. They both tell cute little stories that can be enjoyed by a child's mind. The recital continued with two arias sung by Gretel in Engelbert …

Finding aid only for Manuscripts Collection 8. Correspondence and diaries of Deel Carl Perguson, Jr., Horse Branch (Ohio County), Kentucky, and Seattle, Washington. Of interest are his letters written while serving in World War II in the United States, North Africa, and Italy, and his later memoirs of this period. Also of interest are diaries of his years as a student at Western Kentucky State Teachers College, 1939-1943. The collection also includes his recollections of growing up in Horse Branch in the 1920s and 1930s.

The 1920s was a transitional decade in the political history of the United States. Progressivism did not have the influence it had had in the first couple of decades of the 20th Century but its ideas were still part of the debate. But many other elements became more prominent such as: Americanism, Urbanization, and Nativism. North Dakota is a good case study of these trends and how the Klan tried to use these trends to gain power. The Nonpartisan League, Independent Voters' Association, and Ku Klux Klan conflict in North Dakota reflected broader political conflicts happening within the country over …
