As I prepare to leave England and return to Florida and as the end of the year approaches, I have thought about writing an end of the year summary piece. Thinking about that I decided that what I only would reflect upon the last six or seven weeks of this year, weeks that have turned out to be most remarkable in content and emblematic of the past year.

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

Cephalus makes only a brief appearance in Plato’s Republic, but his conversation with Socrates has generated remarkable disagreement: while some think Plato’s portrayal of the rich old metic is largely positive, many, including Julia Annas, Peter Steinberger, and Mark Gifford, argue that beneath Plato’s superficially sympathetic portrait lies a subtext of condemnation and malice. In this paper, I reject the later interpretation, defending Cephalus against two common charges: first, that Plato finds Cephalus’ views on the relationship between money and virtue morally outrageous, and next, that Plato exploits readers’ background knowledge of the historical Cephalus’ tragic fate to employ the …

In The Slats Of This Small Town: A Collection Of Poetry, Maegon L. Mayes

Student Theses and Dissertations

The majority of these poems were inspired by actual small-town figures and instances, so the pairing down of narrative substance and the varying rhythm of common language are applied throughout. For this reason, most of the poems are written in free verse. One exception is a single poem that is near Tanka; that poem and a few other concept poems included are a bit more universal in content and are without the same colorations of fixed time and place, drifters that came to the mindscape of this collection.

My thesis exhibition, The Linear Path, explores the relationship between line, the human figure, and installation. It explores line quality by showing the body's movement and continuity through installation. The Linear Path looks at my path through art and records the process of my transition through time.

Political Competition, Relative Deprivation, And Perceived Threat: A Research Note On Anti- Christian Violence In India, Chad Bauman, Tamara Leech

Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works

A preliminary subnational statistical analysis of violence against Christians in contemporary India, this article suggests that whereas the data provide very little support for simple, demographic explanations of this violence, they do more robustly support theories emphasizing the relative status of ethnic and religious minorities (vis-à-vis majorities) and the perception, among Hindus, that Christians (and other minorities) represent a threat to their numerical, political and economic strength.

Animal ethics committees have been set up in many countries as a way to scrutinize animal experimentation and to assure the public that if animals are used in research then it is for a worthwhile cause and suffering is kept to a minimum. The ideals of Refinement, Reduction and Replacement are commonly upheld. However while refinement and reduction receive much attention in animal ethics committees the replacement of animals is much more difficult to incorporate into the committees’ deliberations. Presenta a cuatro poetas cubanos de la diáspora, que radican en Europa, donde encuentra una continuidad del sentimiento de nostalgia y arraigo a los orígenes, con poetas cubanos también transterrados a lo largo del siglo XIX y XX. Al señalar el peso de las relaciones sociales y políticas que determinaron su condición de exiliados, dice la autora: Pero ellos son poetas y ya sabemos que el oficio no está institucionalizado porque el poema no tiene casa, es más, no requiere Casa más allá de la Metáfora que él mismo cre.
