The author outlines his teaching philosophy as it pertains to the secondary classroom. Also included in this work are three artifacts which serve to strengthen and elaborate on the teaching philosophy. The artifacts are manifestations of the author’s beliefs on how culture, literacy, and language can be addressed in the L2 classroom. This study is an update to the 1978 thesis of Acton Eric Ostling, Jr. and the 1993 replication study by Jay Warren Gilbert. These two studies explore a process for evaluating specific compositions, from a selected list, against a set of ten criteria defining serious artistic merit. This study reevaluates those compositions that met the criteria in the previous studies, as well as those compositions that were within ten points of meeting the criteria in the previous studies. Additional compositions, especially those composed since 1993, are also included.

The study utilizes eight procedures for accomplishing its objective, including defining the …

Code-Switching And Language Change In Tunisia, Lotfi Sayahi

Languages, Literatures and Cultures Faculty Scholarship

This article quantitatively studies the patterns of Tunisian Arabic/French code-switching and the possible implications for contact-induced change in the Tunisian dialect. The purpose is to account for the extent of the occurrence of code-switching across gender lines and levels of education and assess its role in the interference from French into Arabic, both at the lexical and structural levels. Recorded semi-directed sociolinguistic interviews with twelve speakers are examined for type and frequency of code-switching and use of French borrowings.

Results show that education plays a role in distinguishing the group with a higher education from the group with only a …

This thesis details the process of the creation of the new script, Your Last Friend, Inc., a play about two conmen who realize that selling death isn't nearly as easy as selling life to the hopeless. The Hardwood Ecosystem Experiment (HEE) in central Indiana presents an excellent opportunity to study species reactions to different forestry practices: clearcutting, shelterwood cutting, and single tree selections. This project focuses on the differences in the populations and diets of the various insectivorous bat species in the HEE management units. Bats studied were Myotis septentrionalis, Lasiurus borealis, Eptesicus fuscus, Perimyotis subflavus, Myotis sodalis, Myotis lucifugus, and Lasionycteris noctivagans. Since insectivorous bats do not simply eat whatever is available, and I hypothesize that the diets of these bats will not change despite their changing environment and changing populations. The issue of sexual violence against women has been an area of interest to psychological researchers because of its importance and prevalence in America. A problem that has been attracting more attention recently is sexual coercion against women, especially on college campuses. Researchers have consistently found that over half of college women have been victim to coercive sexual encounters (Struckman-Johnson, Struckman-Johnson, & Anderson, 2003) making this a serious problem in need of greater understanding. The Man On the Postcard is the tale of a generational struggle against 'history' itself, in which one family attempts to discover the identity of a hero long ignored by the US.
On one August afternoon in 1916, the USS Memphis capsized off the coast of the Dominican Republic after being caught in a massive tsunami. Howard Weaver, just seventeen, was nearly lost to the unforgiving ocean before being saved by a native fisherman. Decades later, Weaver would leave his sons, Frank and Nathan, with a single remnant of this unknown hero's legacy: a faded postcard bearing his likeness.

Although there has been a deafening critical silence regarding Charlotte Bront‘'s representation of Continental identity in Jane Eyre (1847), this thesis argues that the Continental identity, as it appears in Jane Eyre, is a collection of negative cultural traits stereotypical of the Latinate countries and Germany. By creating associations between characters that embody English national identity and those that are an emblem of Continental identity, Bront‘ de-legitimizes the notion of national identity. Furthermore, her novels, specifically Jane Eyre and Villette (1853) highlight the fact that both France and Germany, elements of the Continental identity, are a central presence in …

This study analyzed the landing phase of hurdle clearance to investigate how the vertical displacement in the hurdler’s center of mass and foot pressures at ground contact lead to a change in the hurdler’s overall horizontal velocity of the center of mass. This study examined four male collegiate high hurdlers as they performed three trials of clearing one 42 inch high hurdle. The subjects were filmed during the three trials using three Panasonic cameras (60 Hz) and one JVC video camera (60 Hz), which was later used to provide video images in order to digitize each frame using the APAS …

Most of the past and current research on school bullying focuses on peer bullying, but there is a gap in the understanding of types and characteristics of bullying behaviors. Comparing Fundamentalisms: A Social Movement Theory Approach, David Romney

The last forty years have witnessed the emergence of a number of Islamist and Jewish fundamentalist groups, resulting in a number of comparative studies that try to explain this phenomenon (e.g. Antoun and Hegland 1987; Sivan and Friedman 1990). Although scholars have argued varying reasons for this recent religious resurgence, most have recognized the importance of the 1967 war to both Jewish and Islamist fundamentalist movements. Some of these scholars see the religious resurgence following this war as a continuation of religious sentiments expressed by pre-1967 Zionist and fundamentalist Islamic groups rather than as a new movement (Davis 1987, 149-152).

As a topic for academic focus, fan fiction provides a unique medium for studying how multiple factors intersect with and influence a writer from invention to creation through revision. The act of writing fan fiction itself provides multiple possibilities for engaging with and analyzing a source text. In addition, an interactive online fan fiction community formed and based around a specific idea becomes, not only a location for sharing common interests, but also a space for active discourse. While it is clear that women play an important role in many of the tales of Edgar Allan Poe, in many of his stories that center around women, more specifically, “Morelia,” “Ligeia,” Berenice,” and “The Fall of the House of Usher,” Poe, through his male protagonists, is conflicted over their characterization. On the one hand, these women are presented as extraordinarily powerful, which is manifested in either their intellectual or sexual dominance over their male counterparts. This work focuses on two periods of French history marked by the great musical creativity — the Middle Ages (more specifically, from the eleventh to thirteenth centuries) and the Belle Époque (i.e. the end of the nineteenth and the early twentieth century). The choice of these two periods is motivated by the fact that the French were profoundly interested by the Middle Ages in the nineteenth century. Urban Consumption In Late 19th-Century Dorchester, Jennifer Poulsen

Anthropology, Historical Archaeology Masters Theses Collection

This thesis examines the bottles recovered from an 1895 fill deposit at the Blake House site in Dorchester, MA, to determine what inconspicuous consumption reveals about the anonymous consumers of Dorchester in the late 19th century. The assemblage is composed of 1,892 pieces of bottle glass, representing food, alcohol, medicine, and household products, 73 with original paper labels. The analysis presented here demonstrates the consumers were from several households and included men, women and children from immigrant populations. Despite evidence for intensive recycling of bottles, indicating that these individuals were under economic stress, they had some amount of discretionary money …
