The southwestern United States has an exceptional history that makes the region a prime focus for study concentrating on culture, tradition, language and land. As an area closely tied to the concept of conquest, the Southwest has had its share of issues related to colonization, imperialism, Manifest Destiny, and cultural erasure. This study focuses on the Southwest as a region that is closely linked to the land as it relates to the formation of identities of its people. Los Tres Grandes, Ernesto Galarza, Herman Gallegos, and Julian Samora, fused intellectual constructs and grassroots strategies to reverse the societal dynamics they understood had marginalized Mexican Americans at both governmental and social levels. In 1968, the three scholar/activists launched the Southwest Council of La Raza (SWCLR), which four years later became the National Council of La Raza. My dissertation explores the relationship of these three men, a nexus of history and personality that launched what became the largest civil rights organization for Latinos in the United States. This pilot study compared the perceptions of beauty among Chinese women who were exchange students in the United States with Chinese women who were students in their homeland. We interviewed 19 women in China and 19 women in the United States to determine differences in responses. In accordance with the sociocultural approach and the social comparison approach, we expected Chinese women in the United States to have a be more acculturate, more frequently conclude that American women were more beautiful than Chinese women, be more likely than those studying in China to report body dissatisfaction, be more likely to dislike …

Dorothy Noyes, in her essay "Tradition: Three Traditions," notes that the word "tradition" implies "handing over" or "delivery" (Noyes 233). Furthermore, tradition is identified as a communal belonging that involves "the transfer of responsibility for a valued practice or performance" from one generation to the next (233). This research paper analyzes Mark Twain's use of racist speech and racial stereotypes in his novel Pudd'nhead Wilson. Twain has often been criticized for his seemingly inflammatory language. However, a close reading of the text, supplemented by research in several anthologies of critical essays, reveals that Twain was actually interested in social justice. This is evident in his portrayal of Roxana as a sympathetic character who is victimized by white racist society in Dawson's Landing, Mississippi during the time of slavery. In the final analysis, Twain's writing was a product of the time period during which he wrote. This …

This dissertation investigates the grammar of noun phrases as produced in two genres (spontaneous conversations and Pear Film narratives) of spoken Ecuadorian Spanish. As speakers converse and narrate, they make choices about what form (full NP, pronoun, unexpressed) to use for a noun in a particular context, how to best modify that noun (choice of article and other determiners) and what syntactic role to use; this is a study of the different factors that motivate those decisions. In selected works of the three above-mentioned writers, I examine the intertwined representation of social violence and denial of citizenship. The thesis inquires into the way literature depicts and critiques socio-economic difference and proposes — within the fictional realm — modes of reclaiming agency through written expression. Metaphors in written discourse, such as letters using bahasa Indonesia, can be derived from the metaphorical expressions used by writers to editors, showing conceptualization based on what they experience, feel, and think in their lives. This paper aims to find out the universality of the concepts shown by the metaphors and the users employing them. Using nonparticipant observation with a note-taking technique, the data are collected and selected purposively. Through distributional, referential, reflective introspective, and abductive inferential methods, the data are analyzed. The purpose of this study is to describe the prophetic message portrayed through the characters within Kuntowijoyo’s fiction. The focus of the study is limited to the existence of the child and the grandfather and also their relation in conveying the prophetic message. The sources of the data for this study are Kuntowijoyo’s novel along with his fiction collections. Thus, the data are gathered through document collection. Those data are analyzed using an interactive analysis method, which results in simultaneous data collection and analysis. This paper is intended to describe the results of a study focusing on students’ translation problems in translating Arabic texts into Indonesian. The problems result from students’ understanding and retelling (re-expressing) the results of that understanding during the translation process. In this study, the researcher applies a descriptive qualitative method. The results show that students’ problems in translation are closely related to (1) their understanding of linguistic and non-linguistic structures, and (2) their difficulties in retelling (re-expressing) the results of their reading regarding linguistic and non-linguistic issues.

The Bible’s translator expects his translation to be not only accurate, but also acceptable in accordance with the norms and cultural values of its readers. This study aims to describe the domesticating ideology in translation. Tu–Vous Theory combined with Attitude, as part of Appraisal Theory in Systemic Functional Linguistics, is used to investigate how words should be used. Dynamic Equivalence Theory is utilized to describe word usage in society. A descriptive qualitative approach in determining two principal orientations of translation techniques, methods, and ideologies was applied in analyzing the data. Privies, Politics, And Public Schools: Public Health And Education Reform In Arkansas, 1908-1917, Myra Suzanne Easley

From 1908 until 1914, Arkansas education administrators, public health officials, and women's associations participated in Southern campaigns for hookworm eradication and the improvement of public school systems. This thesis examines the activities of these three groups in relation to school sanitation and health education as well as the results of their cooperative efforts. Local school improvement associations and the Arkansas Federation of Women's Clubs publicized the poor conditions of Arkansas schools, solicited community participation, and achieved tangible improvements in the sanitation and appearance of individual school environments. The purpose of this study was to research the effects of classical music on the behavior of elementary school children. Based upon data collected from an exhaustive literature review, the researcher asserted that classical music was capable of modifying the mood, emotions and performance of elementary students. Classical music was presented to students in a classroom setting as background music and their resulting behavior patterns were noted and measured. As the data from these studies were analyzed, the researcher asserted that classical music was capable of modifying behavior.
