The Mediatization Of War: A Comparison Of The American And German Media Coverage Of The Vietnam And Iraq Wars, Gerd Horten

The last fifty years have seen the further expansion of the role of media during times of war. Although no longer dominated by large-scale propaganda agencies as during the two world wars, the media nevertheless have become ever more integral to the planning and conduct of wars. This article applies the concept of mediatization in an attempt to capture the ever-increasing role of the media during war times as part of an ongoing and accelerating historical process. It uses a comparative analysis to highlight the commonalities of this process as well as to emphasize national particularities. The article argues that …

Eternal Security: The What If's And The Word Of God, Jason Rutherford

Theses and Dissertations

Eternal security is the doctrine that teaches that a redeemed individual will remain in a redeemed state, regardless of his or her action following conversion. God is the author and finisher of salvation, never a work of the individual human, either before or after belief. This doctrine rests upon both explicit teaching in the Scripture and in a clear understanding of what actually occurs in salvation. This thesis also contains an afterword that examines the effect of postmodernism on Biblical communication in the 21st century.

This thesis examines the role of language and its' power in abusive relationships. The thesis consists of two sections. The first section is a personal narrative. It is composed of chapters focusing on the author's extensive history in abusive relationships. Each chapter reveals a different relationship, including the abusive language used in it. Dialog used in such relationships plays a crucial role throughout the piece. The second section is a theoretical analysis of abuse. The focus on dialog is reiterated in this part. Corot's "Lyrical" Landscapes After 1850: Inspiration And Interpretation, Eileen Leila Turan

Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot was a prolific painter of the French landscape in the nineteenth century. Corot's landscape style had two distinctive periods: a classically inspired period prior to 1850, and then the dramatically different style after 1850. Characterized by the emphasis on light and atmosphere through a painterly approach, Corot's late landscapes have been neglected by scholars who routinely emphasize the early landscapes and his role in the development of Impressionism. This research clearly defines the late landscape style, details the existing scholarship, and offers new interpretation of the landscape style of Corot after 1850. In this paper, we explore emerging modes of digitally-mediated participation in urban space that engage bodily and architectural relationships with data rich environments. We contend that the combination of data visualization, public space, and digital display technologies represent an important aesthetic and technical challenge that engage new dimensions of presence in a social and material environment characterized by net works and data.

Situated in Republican-era Shanghai, already a great metropolitan city, Daoist Modern leads the readers through a Daoist inner-alchemy revivalist (no pun intended) movement that actively participated in China’s transformation from its imperial past toward modernization. Xun Liu’s book traces the way in which Chen Yingning (1880–1969) and his followers infused both intellectual discourse and the cultivation of immortality with issues pertinent to their own identity as Chinese urban elites: Nationalism and the roles of elite Daoist practitioners in a time of crisis; gender equality and women’s rights; and changing modes of information dissemination.

Is the climate any warmer for women in philosophy? Unfortunately, there is no way to answer this question with much confidence. There are no systematic measures of even the numbers of women in philosophy let alone systematic measures of the overall climate. When we add in that the climate for women varies significantly from department to department and subfield to subfield, assessing the climate for women in philosophy becomes even more difficult. I take climate to include overt instances of sex discrimination and sexual harassment as well as cumulative instances of subtle bias against women. Both overt and subtle contributors …

Three Views Of The One True World And What They Make Of Mere Worldviews: A Husserlian Approach To Weltanschauung, Kenneth Knies

Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

The problem of worldview is crucial to Husserl’s conception of phenomenology as an immanent critique of modern scientific rationality. According to Husserl, our scientific traditions tend to frame the distinction between mere worldviews and the one true world in a way inimical to the aims of science itself. It is thus an important task for the phenomenological critique of reason to rehabilitate this distinction. This paper outlines three ways to do it. The first two define world-directed sciences in the customary sense (objective and critical-historical sciences, respectively); the third defines phenomenology and opens up the phenomenological view of the world.

The Singularity of Puppies is an unsettling short story set in 1978 in DeLand, Florida. The story concerns the relationship between eight-year-old Joey Brown and his puppy, Fredrick Brown. The story was originally published in The Fantastique Unfettered #3. The Singularity of Puppies is speculative fiction, and a tribute to Fredric Brown (1906-1972), a science fiction and mystery author.
