This research paper examines the organizing work of “The Modern Strivers”, a group of black high-school students from Washington D.C.’s Eastern Public High School, between the years of 1967-1969. Following in the legacy of the Black Freedom Struggle’s democratic organizing tradition and harnessing the creativity and intellectual exuberance of the late 1960’s surging Black Nationalism, the Strivers designed and established their own semi-autonomous Freedom School, while continuing to fight for relevant curricula and greater black community control at Eastern High. The Strivers’ organizing demonstrates that youth of color were key thinkers and actors within the Black Power movement of Washington, …

The Mindstorm is the story of Marcus Hamilton, a gay, African-American, teenager who is born with incredible telekinetic powers. He has the ability to levitate considerably large objects with his mind, create telekinetic force fields, and fly. After preventing a convenience store hold-up, he decides to become a superhero and takes the name Mindstorm.

There are two story arcs: 1) Marcus’ everyday life and high school problems, including racism, homophobia, and his first same-sex relationship; and, 2) Marcus, as Mindstorm, developing his powers and confronting Nathan Vaughn, a corrupt industrialist/weapons developer, terrorist, and main antagonist.

The Maya worldview is constructed on the concept of balance. Their traditional beliefs emphasize balancing the spiritual and physical forces in their lives to maintain equilibrium and thus, health. Nevertheless, outside forces have impinged heavily on this worldview, often shifting Maya views on health. Discussions with Maya partners throughout the United States revealed that though they do utilize ethnomedicine, they tend to overvalue biomedical techniques and caregivers—even if they do not seek care from them. Maya history, cultural identity, and the experience of diaspora shape the way Maya immigrants view their health and their health care options, often leading them …

Political Science Faculty Research

In this paper, we offer some preliminary insights into a comparison of Islam and Roman Catholicism as transnational or “transcivilizational” political phenomena. We note that both traditions are monotheistic, offer universalist theologies, and have played important political roles both historically and in contemporary national and international politics. The comparison provides some additional insights into the role of „the sacred‟ in politics at various levels, and presents the possibility of an intermediate level of analysis in comparative politics.

It was approximately 12:45 a.m. in London when Mark Teixeira’s bases loaded blast reached the seats in The Can, and the Yankees added four runs to the one they were gifted in the first inning. It was 5-0. David Price had very little, and I turned off my computer and went to bed. At the time the Braves were 1-1 with Philadelphia, the Red Sox and O’s were scoreless and that seemed not to matter at that point. The Cardinals and Astros had not yet begun.

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public

One of my favorite movies is Back to the Future III. I know that is a terrible choice in some folks' eyes. The response I usually get is an, "ugh!" and a snarl of the lip. Still, I think there is so much going on in that film, from the struggle between fatalism and free will to the themes of love and sacrifice, heartache and heartbreak.

A mimeographed copy of Professor Dau's Notes for Lectures on Catechism was among my father's papers – Ernest Melchsner, St. Louis seminary class of 1922. Biblical texts from the New King James -Version have been added to the references.

With the assistance of Rev. Daniel Preus and the resource desk at Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, IN, It has been determined that the catechism referred to in these Notes was the German-English Schwan Catechism from 1912.

The purpose of this study is to analyse the interaction between art and contested notions of Hong Kong identity by examining recent installations that employ the red, white and blue-striped plastic fabric, locally known in Hong Kong as red-white-blue (紅白藍). The red-white-blue fabric has, in recent years, become a signifier of the collective identity of Hong Kong people and of the ‘Hong Kong spirit’, with specific reference to the traits of the working class in the 1960s. The repeated articulations of this material in artworks show that there are certain qualities in this material with which local people identify. This …

The export of Carolingian arms and armor to Northern regions outside the Frankish Empire from the 9th and early 10th century is a subject which has seen a gradual increase of interest among archaeologists and historians alike. Recent research has shown that the Vikings of this period bore Frankish arms, particularly swords, received either through trade or by spolia that is plunder.1 In the examination of material remains, illustrations, and capitularies, the reason why Carolingian arms and armor were prized amongst the Viking nations can be ascertained and evidence found as to how the Vikings came to possess such valued …
