Curated Exhibit: Civil War Medicine, Laura J. Hall

Posters and Presentations

The Civil War Medicine exhibit, curated by Laura J. Hall, MFA, explored the medical practices and challenges faced during the American Civil War. With more than 620,000 deaths, many from disease rather than battlefield injuries, the war presented unprecedented challenges for medical personnel who were often unprepared for the trauma of battle. The exhibit delved into the history of Civil War medicine, including amputations, disease, and the impact of the war on the evolution of American medical practices. The exhibit was on display from October 2011 to August 2012 at the UNM Domenici Center for Health Sciences Education.

The research undertaken in this dissertation was designed to explore how the institutionalized social inequalities in prehistoric Woodland society are reflected in the differences in the procurement, in the life history, and the final discard locations of the flaked chert stone tools from the Crystal River site (8CI1). The Woodland period (1000 BC to AD 1000) was a time of both stability and change in Native American society. Many of the core institutions such as subsistence, hunting and ceramic technology, and residence remained relatively constant while religious and political institutions underwent dramatic changes. Many stories have been born from the mists of Irish mythology. None, however, can match the epic tale of St. Patrick’s encounter with Caílte and Oisín, the last of Finn mac Cumaill’s legendary band of warriors. This grand saga, the Acallam na Senórach: “An Irish Colloquy”, intertwines the ancient lore and the new religion, creating a new and lasting vision for Ireland. The tale has been adapted into an hour-long English-language music and vocal piece by composer Tarik O’Regan. Organizing For Antiracism In Writing Centers: Principles For Enacting Social Change, Moira Ozias, Beth Godbee

We move through the chapter in three parts. First, we define organizing and answer the question of whether we in writing centers should do this work by showing how we already are. Second, we identify guiding principles consistent with the aims of antiracism as well as the collaborative and dialogic pedagogies of writing centers. Drawing on cross-disciplinary research, we articulate three frameworks for organizing: (1) direct action organizing (Bobo, Kendall, and Max 2001); (2) a balance of strategies and tactics (Alinsky 1945; Mathieu 2005); and (3) a dialectic approach (Papa, Singhal, and Papa 2006). FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Looks at Davidman’s involvement with Hollywood—her short and unlamented stint in the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Junior Writer Program in 1939, and her movie reviews for the Communist Party of the USA newspaper, New Masses, in 1941–1943. Davidman’s incisive wit, impatience with any hint of phoniness, and passion for social, racial, and gender justice come through clearly in her writing.

Scholar Guest of Honor speech, Mythcon 42. A discussion of the continuing influence of Tolkien’s famed Beowulf essay on its seventy-fifth anniversary. Shows how the essay both opened up and limited later Beowulf scholarship, and draws some interesting parallels with the current state of Tolkien scholarship. Along the way, questions the wisdom of believing everything an author says about his own work, and asserts the value of familiarity with critical history.

A Knight at the Opera examines the remarkable and unknown role that the medieval legend (and Wagner opera) Tannhäuser played in Jewish cultural life in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The book analyzes how three of the greatest Jewish thinkers of that era, Heinrich Heine, Theodor Herzl, and I. L. Peretz, used this central myth of Germany to strengthen Jewish culture and to attack anti-Semitism.
