This study was conducted to determine the associations between homophobia and heterosexism, psychodynamics of the subconscious mind, and life satisfaction among gay men during emerging adulthood. Although researchers have reported on the psychological distress associated with antigay oppression, limited research is available on the psychodynamics of young gay men in the United States, a place known for prevalent homophobia and heterosexism. Kohut's theory of self psychology and self object needs served as the theoretical foundation for the study. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate how a well developed and validated national standard for United States history can affect public school achievement levels. Currently, there is no mandated national standard for United States history; rather it has been left to the respective states to create their own. This study focused on the state of Virginia, which has been able to meet both the nationally mandated adequate yearly progress (AYP) level, and achieve high proficiency levels in United States history achievement. There is a pervasive reading crisis in the United States. Critics, including policymakers, educators, literacy scholars, and professional educational organizations have openly accused university teacher preparation programs of not preparing candidates to deliver effective reading instruction. This qualitative study used narrative inquiry to explore ways in which teacher candidates' participation in a research-based university clinical practicum contributed to their pedagogical understanding of literacy instruction. Conceptually this study was based on constructivism and the ideas of Dewey, Freire, Vygotsky, and Schon. Text curation, like most human endeavors, requires tools. A technique developed for the MONK Project, schema harvesting, provides a useful platform for facilitating the digital conversion and curation of text corpora. The author describes Abbot, an XSLT-based application that has had success in converting various Text Creation Partnership collections, and others, during and after MONK.

Channing Connell, soprano, presented a graduate voice recital on Monday, March 21, 2011 at 8:00 PM in Davis Hall of the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center at the University of Northern Iowa. The recital was performed in collaboration with pianists Korey Barrett and Polina Khatsko and presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Music in Vocal Performance. The recital featured Cinq poemes de Baudelaire by Claude Debussy (1862-1918), select works from the Jtalienisches Liederbuch by Hugo Wolf (1860-1903) and selections by Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873- 1943), each of which is briefly summarized in the body of this abstract.

The debate over the preferred teaching method of ethics is between the methods of neutrality and advocacy. Proponents of each assume that only one method is acceptable. I argue that both methods have acceptable versions and that there are different situations in which one is preferred over the other.

Using both methods throughout an ethics course is preferable to using only one method exclusively. The question then becomes how one decides which method to use with each particular issue. I argue that it depends on whether an ethical issue is controversial or whether or not a consensus exists.

I begin with a cliche´: there are few more striking incongruities in Borges than the gap between his philosophical sophistication and his political naı¨vete´. Like all cliche´s, this one has its grain of truth. If Borges’ treatment of traditional philosophical themes is intellectually provocative and subtle, his treatment of political themes*particularly in the many interviews he granted*is often thumb-in-the-eye-provocative and crude, to say the least. How are we to reconcile the image of the erudite metaphysician with that of the writer who notoriously praised the Latin-American military dictatorships of the 1960s and 1970s? A Kantian Argument Against Comparatively Advantageous Genetic Modification, David Jensen

The genetic modification of children is becoming a more likely possibility given our rapid progress in medical technologies. I argue, from a broadly Kantian point of view, that at least one kind of such modificationdmodification by a parent for the sake of a child’s comparative advantagedis not rationally justified. To argue this, I first characterize a necessary condition on reasons and rational justification: what is a reason for an agent to do an action in one set of circumstances must be a reason for any in those circumstances to do the action. In “Creation Ethics: The Moral Status of Early Fetuses and the Ethics of Abortion,” Elizabeth Harman has offered a novel approach to settling the question of the moral status of some fetuses. In the case of an early fetus (one lacking intrinsic properties that convey moral status), Harman maintains that, already lacking intrinsic properties, an early fetus that additionally lacks a future thus lacks moral status. However, Harman argues that this lacking does not figure into rational decision making about aborting one’s fetus since the decision to abort determines the fetus’s having a future and, in turn, its moral status; …

“Behold, I have dreamed a dream,” Lehi announced to his family one morning in the valley of Lemuel in northwestern Arabia (1 Nephi 8:2; see also 9:1; 10:16). Using a qualitative descriptive methodology, this study explored the experiences of Nepalese women trafficked into prostitution in India. The study found that poverty and lack of awareness about being at risk for trafficking are the major precursors for their trafficking experience. Abduction, fake marriages and the seduction of a better job were the major approaches adopted by pimps to traffic the women. The study also showed that after returning from the Indian brothel(s), they were rejected by their family and community. Such rejections occurred as family and community perceived these young women as at high risk for HIV infection. Strategies …

Of great importance to policy makers is to know if females and poor households benefit more or less than the males or rich households from an expansion in access to public education. This is marginal benefit incidence of public spending which is rarely determined. In this paper, we determine the extent to which an expansion in public education is effective in reducing gender gaps in enrollments and thus, poverty in Cameroon. Government subsidies directed towards higher education are poorly targeted and the poorest income groups receive less than the richest income groups and indeed favor those who are better off. …

Incarcerated women are among the most vulnerable and perhaps the least studied populations in the US. Significant proportions of female inmates are substance users, and many living in unstable housing conditions or being homeless. Female inmates are often at high risk of engaging in sex exchange for drugs or housing needs. While a disproportionate number of incarcerated women have experienced childhood household adversities and maltreatments, the effects of these childhood experiences on psychosocial and behavioral outcomes of this population in later life. This article presents and interprets Doris Lessing’s first novel, The Grass is Singing (1950), as both a personal and psychological portrayal of its female protagonist, Mary Turner, from her childhood to death, and as a political exposure of the futility and fragility of the patriarchal and colonial society. This novel is Mary’s failure of individuation in the confrontation of her psychological and cultural parts, shaped by colonial experience. Lessing, by depicting her protagonist in a particular British colonial setting, artistically reveals that her identity is negotiated and constructed by the social and behavioral expectations, developed through her racial role as …
