Foucault, Marxism And The Cuban Revolution: Historical And Contemporary Reflections, Sam Binkley, Jorge Capetillo-Ponce

This article relates central themes of Marxist and Foucauldian thought to the intellectual and political legacy of the Cuban Revolution. Against the backdrop of a reading of Foucault’s relationship to the revolutionary left, it is argued that Marxist theoretical discourse on guerrilla struggle (as articulated by Mao, Guevara and others) provide an intriguing case for bio-political struggle. In the case of the Cuban revolution, an ethics of self-transformation appears in which new ways of living and practicing life are cultivated in opposition to sedimentations of state power. In 1831, Mathew Carey, a well-known Philadelphia economist, wrote a city official describing the situation of black children in the city. He called for the creation of an orphanage to aid these children and described the motives for this action as not only the “humanity and benevolence” of Philadelphians, but also “personal interest”, as this class could otherwise turn “lawless”. Unknown to Carey, the Association for the Care of Coloured Orphans had been established in 1822 by a group of benevolent Quaker women dedicated to aiding this destitute class in an effort to promote compensatory justice for generations of oppression …

Founded in 1939, in the mid-twentieth century, Pioneer Girls was a vital Christian youth movement providing an explicitly evangelical alternative to Girl Scouts. Using David Bebbington's classic four-point definition, this article will explore the evangelical identity of the organization, including its continuities and discontinuities with fundamentalism as part of the new evangelicalism of the post-World War II era. While 1950s America is well known for the ways in which this time and place was oppressive for girls and women, and the evangelical movement in general is often criticized for suppressing girls and women, a study of Pioneer Girls does not …

Sharing William James’ conviction that “no one of us can get along without the far-reaching beams of light [philosophy] sends over the world’s perspectives” (qtd. on xi), Richard Mullin’s new book seeks to communicate the ethical and spiritual insights of William James, Josiah Royce, and Charles Sanders Peirce to a non-specialist audience. Mullin follows the pragmatists he studies by dropping the traditional, dualistic notion of “soul” while insisting upon the importance of carefully attending to the following issues classically treated as pertaining thereto: the self, free will, moral values, community, and our relationship with the Transcendent (xi). Montesquieu And Locke On Democratic Power And The Justification Of The “War On Terror”, Cory Wimberly

This paper focuses on a comparative analysis of the legitimate exercise of democratic power in the philosophies of Montesquieu and Locke. This analysis not only highlights a strong bifurcation in liberal thought, it also sheds light on the contemporary practice of liberalism through the example of the United States’ ‘War on Terror.’ I argue that although it is Locke who at first blush gives an account of the exercise of democratic power that is more opposed to tyranny, it is Montesquieu’s broader conception that is in many ways more effective at tracking and combating tyranny.

Mimetics Of History, Thomas Asmuth

This article explores how historical reenactments can be more than just reiterations of the past. Using examples like the Port Huron Project and live-action roleplay groups, the author shows how these performances can create new meaning by blending past and present. Instead of just watching history, participants become part of it, creating moments of reflection and sometimes protest. The article argues that reenactment can challenge official versions of history, offer space for underrepresented voices, and encourage deeper thinking about how we remember and interpret the past today.

This article explores how artists in the FUSE series (The CADRE/Montalvo research initiative) creatively re-purpose everyday systems, tools, and cultural norms to challenge how we understand and interact with the world. Using the idea of networks from Actor-Network Theory, the author explains how artists break or shift systems to raise important questions about power, participation, and control.

Through various events, including a geocaching walk, she introduced ideas of structured participation, environmental health, and repurposed systems.

This article explores the work of artist Dan Peterman, who uses recycled materials to create art that promotes sustainability and mutual care between people and the environment. Peterman’s work invites reflection and reuse and blends creativity, community engagement, and environmental consciousness. This article also describes his transformation of an old recycling site into the Experimental Station, a community-focused space for collaboration and renewal.
