The nineteenth century in Europe and America was an era of second thoughts. Those second thoughts were largely about the Enlightenment, which had been born in the mid-1600s as a scientific revolution and blossomed into the Age of Reason in the 1700s, when it seemed that no puzzle was beyond the grasp of scientific rationality. That blossom was snipped all too quickly by the French Revolution, which drowned rationality in human politics in a spray of Jacobin-terrorized blood, then by the revulsion of European art and music from the Enlightenment’s canons of balance and symmetry in favor of the Romantic …

From 1956 through 1967 viewers enjoyed one of the most popular early television shows, To Tell the Truth. Host Bud Collyer would call on three contestants, standing side by side, to explain briefly who they were. Giving different stories, all claimed to be one and the same person. When they finished making their presentations, the host would turn to a panel of four, asking them to identify the only contestant who was in fact telling the truth about himself or herself. Then Collyer would ask that person to please stand up.

Communication, Psychology, and Sociology are three leading academic disciplines engaged in the social scientific study of prayer, the spiritual communication between a believer(s) and God, but rarely do these disciplines collaborate in interdisciplinary prayer scholarship. Possibilities for interdisciplinary prayer research in a health context are explored through a review of the literature and academic interviews. Interdisciplinary linkages in the prayer-health context are organized in an integral "all-quadrant" theoretical model, and an assessment of the viability of interdisciplinary prayer-health research is considered.

Maps do more than simply record geographical locations: maps link locations to the past and present, and even propose future possibilities. Maps graphically display information (or data) that is at once geographic, economic, political, social, scientific, and religious and they can be a starting point for the study of past cultures. Through careful analysis, including the conscious and subconscious selections of map-makers, maps reveal a perception of the world that is as fascinating as it is complex. This is the subjective vision of the world buried beneath the seemingly "objective" façade of the map--the hidden story that the cartographer did …

This qualitative study (a rhetorical/discourse analysis) explores the genre of job postings, particularly postings for writing-related jobs in the financial services sector, to determine how words like "author" and "writer" are used in the discourse community of a financial corporation (a pseudo-scientific "data"-driven organization). If one assumes there is a power struggle between the creative authorship (authority) of the Writer (Author) and the ideological authority of the Corporation, how does the Corporation negotiate with a consenting, potential employee/Writer? The space for this negotiation begins in the job posting.

In On Rhetoric, Aristotle describes rhetoric as an ability of seeing the available means of persuasion. Rather than suggesting that rhetoric is persuasive discourse, Aristotle presents it as a skill one utilizes to assess the situation at hand in order to discover what might prove persuasive. Much of this potentially persuasive material comes from opinions; however, Aristotle's presentation of opinion in On Rhetoric shows a clear departure from those offered by his predecessors such as Plato and Gorgias. Rather than considering general opinion (doxa), as did the earlier Greeks thinkers, Aristotle concentrates primarily on reputable opinions (endoxa) pertaining to the …

Asian American Nonprofit Organizations In U.S. Metropolitan Areas, Chi-Kan Richard Hung

This article analyzes the characteristics of Asian American nonprofit organizations in major U.S. metropolitan areas. The data are based on internet archives of nonprofit organization Form 990 and related information. Asian American nonprofits are less than 20 years old on average. They remain a relatively small part of the nonprofit sector. Religious organizations are generally the largest group among Asian American nonprofits, followed by cultural organizations, service agencies, and public interest associations of similar proportions. Asian American secular organizations as a group tend to be younger, are more likely to by in central cities, in wealthy and poor communities, as …
