Traditional Textile Materials Of Baekje Kingdom, Mi Young Suh, Kil Soon Park

This analysis includes the kinds, colors, and patterns of textile materials, and shows Baekje attained a high level of weaving culture. Baekje was one of three kingdoms of ancient Korea (B.C.18-A.D.660). The territory of Baekje (Fig. 1) was included current Seoul, Gyeonggi-do, Gangwon-do, Chungcheongnambuk-do and Jeollanambuk-do during the fourth century. Also, Baekje influenced Japan many things about textiles including weaving technique. The study analyzed the documentary records of Baekje, such as literature, historical works, excavation reports, and preceding studies.

Introduction

Human designed physical patterns, while having been investigated extensively in terms of their historical, geographic and cultural significance and their aesthetic and/or mathematical characteristics, have not been fully investigated in terms of their evolutionary potential. This paper discusses an experimental art research project which focuses on human designed, physical textile patterns to explore pattern as process and investigate the potential for these patterns to evolve and become emergent.

The most significant factors influencing the culture and traditions of Ladakh are climate, isolation, and inaccessibility. These factors result in a highly practical culture. Ladakh is isolated from the outside world for much of the year because of extreme cold and harsh winter weather. Felt has a unique history as both a craft medium and an industrial material. Recently, it has become a material of intense interest to architects and designers. Felt is a very ancient and primitive material, made by simply matting together wool fibers with moisture and friction. It is a manufactured product, yet it shares many properties with purely natural materials. As a raw material for design, felt has incredible range — it can be made thin and translucent, or very dense and thick, even hard. This report discusses black-colored silks from southeastern Asia that are often referred to as “gummed” silks. These silks are treated with iron-rich mud that coats the silk filaments and creates a deep black color (often in conjunction with a previous coloration). The report covers three areas. Firstly, I review various names used for black mud-treated silks and begin to contextualize the production and use region. Two mud-treated silk samples from early-1930s Southeast Asia are introduced in this discussion. Jiāo-chou (黑絞绸) and Xiang-yun-shā (香雲紗) and are two types of Chinese Canton silk. According to Qing (or Ching) Dynasty documents, Jiāo-chou and Xiang-yun-shā were available as early as the 5th century and these textiles, as well as garments fabricated from them, were exported from Canton as early as the 15th century. Contemporary historians suggested that garments fabricated in Jiāo-chou and Xiang-yun-shā were worn by Chinese in the Honolulu area in the early-20th century. It is well known that mohair, derived from the Angora goat, was long unique to Turkey, and only successfully reared outside of that region in the 150 years. My current project places kesi, or pictorial silk tapestry, in closer proximity to the discourse of Chinese art history, and raises questions about the hierarchical categorization of creative production. Kesi was produced in China beginning in the Northern Song dynasty (960-1127 CE) as a method of weaving that allowed for designs that were independent of loom controlled patterning. When the weavers employed in imperial workshops adopted the medium, they expanded its design repertoire from overall patterning to a means of creating pictures. Among late antique textiles in the British Museum Department of Ancient Egypt and Sudan (hereafter, AES), nearly half (c. 135) are said to have come from the Upper Egyptian town of Akhmim. If the attribution to the site is correct, the textiles provide the Museum with an excellent opportunity to discuss the transformation of Egypt in Late Antiquity through the lens of death and burial.

Seattle was the site of one of the largest protests in recent American history. In 1999, tens of thousands of demonstrators representing a multitude of causes gathered in downtown Seattle to protest the meetings of the World Trade Organization and the larger issue of globalization. While many of the protest events consisted of peaceful marches and demonstrations with isolated incidents of violence, research on the media coverage of these events found that the mainstream media often minimized the contributions of the protesters, portrayed them as violent and disruptive, and showed support for the ability of the police to maintain order. …

This project entailed the selection, background research and documentation, musical analysis, casting, direction, vocal coaching, and post-production analysis of Ridgefield High School's production of Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt's The Fantasticks. Documentation includes research and analysis of the play, its music, and an evaluation of the musical as a production vehicle for the Department of Theatre Arts at Central Washinton University. The analysis also includes a discussion as to the non-traditional directorial vision of this production.

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Bede 's Ecclesiastical History of the English People was composed by a monk of northeastern England around AD 731. It is a tome of nearly unparalleled prominence to this day in English church history. Many Bedan scholars have hitherto been concerned with common themes in Bede's works: biblical typology and exegesis, influences, sources, politics and even the nature of Bede's own mysterious life. This paper, however, seeks to add a definite human component to Bede and the times in which he lived where most studies have not, simply by using modern studies of nostalgia in a universal sense.

Survey Of Leadership Programs: Valued Characteristics Of Leadership Within The Deaf Community, Deborah Kamm-Larew, Marcia Lamkin

JADARA

This study surveyed leadership programs operating for and by the Deaf community through questionnaire and interview data. Three categories of leadership development were identified as currently operating in the United States for people who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing: youth leadership programs, special interest mentoring groups, and formal leadership training programs focused on professional development and leadership skills. In addition, this study identified common leadership traits and training methods within these programs. Using a randomized list of leadership traits, valued characteristics were identified. The traits chosen most often were empowerment, advocacy, and decision making skills.
