Envious Enemies Of The Cross Of Christ (Philippians 3:18), David E. Fredrickson

Contrary to the common understanding, the “enemies of the cross of Christ” in Phil 3:18 are the same people who “proclaim Christ from envy and rivalry” in 1:15. These “enemies” want Paul’s fame, but not the suffering that is built into loving.

Many reports and technical news bulletins presented by organizations such as the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), and the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) highlight that few female and minority college students are choosing science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields of study or careers. For those who choose STEM fields, attrition both during education and in the workplace is pervasive. NSF reports in its 2006 Science Indicators that women account for only 27% of the bachelor’s degrees in computer sciences. And although the …

America's health care system is struggling on many fronts. We are paying more and getting less compared to many other industrialized countries. The staggering costs that cripple our current system can be explained by the patchwork for-profit payer system employed in this country. One solution is to introduce a single payer program funded by the taxes already paid into the system. By eliminating much of the unnecessary administrative costs, health care spending can reach those areas where it matters most--providing quality care to those who need it and access to preventative care.

This paper uses Harry Frankfurt's definition of bullshit as a lens to re-examine Ernest Hemingway's aesthetic of factual details and omission. Frankfurt argues that bullshit consists of speech made with indifference to its veracity, and one who makes a habit of bullshitting may lose touch with reality. By studying three works across the author's career, "Big Two-Hearted River," "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber," and The Old Man and the Sea, one sees that Hemingway's prose style evolves and eventually contradicts his artistic statements. Given the fact that he promotes his aesthetic while discarding it, his theory becomes bullshit. …

Metric Conflict In The Brandenburg Concertos Of J. S. Bach, Ellwood P. Colahan

This paper presents a comprehensive metric analysis of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos, with particular emphasis on the issues of metric conflict. The analytic methodology is based on the work of Fred Lerdahl and Ray Jackendoff, while the analytic notation used is based partly on that of Lerdahl and Jackendoff and partly on that of Jonathan Kramer, with some original modifications.

The paper discusses the factors generating metric conflict, along with its distribution, correlation with other structural parameters, and functional effects. The relationship between metric conflict and fluctuations in the depth of metric hierarchy is examined in detail. Some cases of metric …

For this project, the author uses Bakhtin's theory of carnival to illuminate Zappa's sound and rhetoric. The author hopes that by using this theoretical lens allows audiences to understand Zappa's choices in subject matter. Those who can see his work as satire and understand the use of carnivalesque techniques in challenging authority see the genius in his work.

En esta tesis me prepongo a estudiar el desarrollo de la leyenda de Joaquín Murrieta, un bandido hispano quien ganó fama durante la fiebre del oro en California. Sigo las transformaciones de esta leyenda cronológicamente, desde la muerte del Joaquín en 1853 hasta el presente. En cada período en que surge la leyenda, la relaciono con las condiciones sociales, políticas, y económicas de la época. De este modo, puedo examinar cómo la historia y las tensiones raciales entre angloamericanos e hispanos han influido la manera en que autores y artistas han representado a Joaquín.

The first documented account of a Danish language church service on American soil were those conducted by the Rev. Rasmus Jensen, a Danish Pastor who was part of the Jens Munk led expedition of 1619-1620 to find the Northwest Passage to the Orient.
