Hearing Impaired?... Discerning God's Will, Jodi Rowland May 2008

Hearing Impaired?... Discerning God's Will, Jodi Rowland

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"Discernment. This word invokes much thought. Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary defines discernment as “the quality of being able to grasp and comprehend what is obscure” or “an act of discerning.” Turning then to discerning, the dictionary defines this word as “showing insight and understanding.” What does discernment mean, then, in relation to one’s life? Looking at discernment within the context of Christian spirituality, one can better grasp the concept of discernment in relation to one’s life."

Islam And The Environment, Erin Knoerl

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"The world today is under attack by a slow and steady enemy. The Earth’s health is getting more complicated as we speak. Over a course of a few years the average temperature of the earth has increased a couple of degrees. This is turn has created a snowball effect. The increase in temperature is causing glaciers to melt, which in turn has led to the ice to break off, stranding polar bears and penguins in the middle of the ocean. With the glaciers melting the sea level is changing …

Priest And Prince: Clement Vii And The Struggle Of Church And State In The Renaissance, Fred Dotolo May 2008

Priest And Prince: Clement Vii And The Struggle Of Church And State In The Renaissance, Fred Dotolo

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"A historian once ended his work on Clement VII (r. 1523-34) by stating, “No pope ever began so well, or ended so miserably.” True enough in the sense that most contemporary observers were more thankful than mournful at Clement’s passing. However, one might also see in his papacy a vigorous defense of papal rights against the growth of monarchial power, a diplomatic and even pastoral struggle to retain the ancient division within Christendom of the priestly and kingly offices. Should the new monarchs of the early modern period reduce …

Ports Of Slavery, Ports Of Freedom: How Slaves Used Northern Seaports’ Maritime Industry To Escape And Create Trans-Atlantic Identities, 1713-1783, Charles Foy May 2008

Ports Of Slavery, Ports Of Freedom: How Slaves Used Northern Seaports’ Maritime Industry To Escape And Create Trans-Atlantic Identities, 1713-1783, Charles Foy

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

This dissertation examines and reconstructs the lives of fugitive slaves who used the maritime industries in New York, Philadelphia and Newport to achieve freedom. It focuses on slaves during the period between 1713, the end of Queen Anne’s War, and 1783, the end of the American Revolution. While the study’s primary focus is on slavery in three port cities, it employs a broad geographic approach to consider how enslaved individuals in rural areas surrounding New York, Philadelphia and Newport, as well as slaves in more distant regions, used the maritime industry in northern port cities to escape slavery. Maritime work …

The Geometry Of Intuitions: Reconsidering Kantian Constructivism, Michael Mcnulty May 2008

The Geometry Of Intuitions: Reconsidering Kantian Constructivism, Michael Mcnulty

Philosophy Honors Projects

The role of visual methods in geometry is puzzling. Though diagrams can make a geometric theorem immediately evident, current rules of proper inference suggest that diagrams are mere heuristics-simply aiding in the psychological digestibility of a proof. Securing a justificatory role for visual methods involves describing how inference from a diagram guarantees the universality and the a:priority of a geometric theorem. Such an analysis is provided in Kant's synthetic a priori account of geometry. In this paper, Kant's theory is explicated and subsequently defended from attacks related to modern advances in predicate logic, relativistic physics, non-Euclidean geometry and formalism.

The Act Of Writing A Children's Book, Alexandra Mancini May 2008

The Act Of Writing A Children's Book, Alexandra Mancini

Senior Honors Projects

Literacy is one of the most important aspects of teaching and education for young children and old in the US and across the world. There have been numerous studies indicating the profound impact that reading has, not only in academia but also in the workforce later on in life. The earlier children are exposed to literacy topics, the better success they demonstrate in the future. It is for these reasons that I selected a topic concerning literacy. The purpose of my project was multifaceted. I had purposes for young children ages 3-5. The essence of my project was to write …

Living Through The Tension: Religion And Public Policy In The Thought Of Gilbert Meilaender, Mark W. Foreman May 2008

Living Through The Tension: Religion And Public Policy In The Thought Of Gilbert Meilaender, Mark W. Foreman

Faculty Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to examine and evaluate the position of Gilbert Meilaender on the appropriateness of appealing to religious reasons as support for one's position on issues of public policy. The dissertation establishes that, while Meilaender often discusses public policy issues directly or indirectly from a distinctively Christian perspective, he argues that such discussions are unavoidable, appropriate and consistent with toleration for other views in a pluralistic democracy. While this may create a certain amount of tension within pluralistic democracy, it poses no serious threat to social stability and can be both civically virtuous and respectful of …

Orgolhs, Paratge, And La Gentils Toloza: Imagining Community In The Song Of The Cathar Wars, Elizabeth Johnson

History Honors Projects

The Albigensian Crusade in Occitania (1208-1229), which targeted the Cathar heretics as well as their orthodox compatriots, impelled an otherwise disparate set of Occitan noblemen to unite in opposition to the invasion. This newfound cohesion gave birth to an Occitan political community whose members were united by common fears, goals, and virtues. Through my analysis of the second portion of the chanson de geste, The Song of the Cathar Wars, authored by an anonymous poet sympathetic to the Occitans, I suggest the emergence of this Occitan community based upon (1) the portrayal of the French crusaders as well as the …

Against Unrestricted Human Enhancement, Patrick Lin, Fritz Allhoff May 2008

Against Unrestricted Human Enhancement, Patrick Lin, Fritz Allhoff

Philosophy

The defining debate in this new century will be about technology and human enhancement, according to many across the political spectrum. Our ability to use science to enhance our bodies and minds – as opposed to its application for therapeutic purposes – is one of the most personal and therefore passionate issues in an era where emerging technologies seduce us with new and fantastic possibilities for our future. But in the process, we are forced to rethink what it means to be human or, essentially, our own identity. For some, technology holds the promise of making us superhuman; for others, …

Give The People What They Want, When They Want It, And They Won’T Sit All The Time: Consumer Behavior In The Online Music Market, Maxwell Mathews May 2008

Give The People What They Want, When They Want It, And They Won’T Sit All The Time: Consumer Behavior In The Online Music Market, Maxwell Mathews

Senior Honors Projects

Since the introduction of the first peer-to-peer file sharing programs in the late twentieth century, sales of traditional music media have plummeted. Sales of CDs peaked in 2000 and have since returned to levels reached in the mid 1990s. The future of music marketing is certainly going to move toward complete online sales. However, online music sales will not increase unless more consumers who illegally download music or purchase CDs and other tangible music products move to online purchases. To determine how to draw more consumers to the online music market, this project attempted to gauge current music consumer behavior …

A Cello Anthology, Alina R. Castro Swonger May 2008

A Cello Anthology, Alina R. Castro Swonger

Senior Honors Projects

Throughout my life, music has been incredibly important and influential. As a cellist for over 15 years, and a great admirer of music for as long as I can remember, music has been an outlet for self-expression and reflection. Realizing the power of music on a personal level, is what first inspired me to learn more about the history, culture, social setting, and life of the composers involved with the various pieces I have studied. I have come to realize that classical music, even without lyrics, can express the deepest emotions, share complex ideas, and create revolutionary change. It is …
