Police Officers’ Perceptions Regarding Persons With Mental Retardation, Danielle M. Eadens May 2008

Police Officers’ Perceptions Regarding Persons With Mental Retardation, Danielle M. Eadens

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the attitudes held by police officers towards persons with mental retardation with regard to the domains of knowledge, social willingness, affect and contact. It also investigated relationships among group membership and perspectives towards mental retardation. An analysis of relationships between the four domains was also completed. A descriptive correlational design was employed to survey police officers, pairing the Social Distance Questionnaire with a researcher-designed instrument consisting of open-ended questions aligned with each domain. The sample included one hundred and eighty police officers from five different bureaus in one county in Central Florida.

Results of the study indicate …

Yeats, Eliot, And Apocalyptic Poetry, Nancy Helen Fletcher May 2008

Yeats, Eliot, And Apocalyptic Poetry, Nancy Helen Fletcher

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Yeats and Eliot merit comparison because they wrote poetry that has been described as apocalyptic in the same historical period and in the same general geographic area but described entirely different visions. These particular works of Yeats and Eliot are appropriate because they represent two widely varying viewpoints on the causes, nature and desirability of what each author felt would be the coming apocalypse. Therefore, more can be learned by comparing the very different outlooks of the poems than by considering each poem separately.

Yeats sees humanity as both the victim and the beneficiary of a series of inescapable historical …

Patch Reefs In Biscayne National Park, Fl: Sediments, Foraminiferal Distributions, And A Comparison Of Three Biotic Indicators Of Reef Health, Alexa Ramirez May 2008

Patch Reefs In Biscayne National Park, Fl: Sediments, Foraminiferal Distributions, And A Comparison Of Three Biotic Indicators Of Reef Health, Alexa Ramirez

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Coral cover remains highest on patch reefs at the northern end of the Florida reef tract. The reasons for this trend are not well understood, but may be related to the protection from extreme variations in water quality parameters provided by the near constant presence of islands at the north extent of the Florida Keys.

Three indices have been developed based on Foraminifera and sediment constituents. Two of the indices, the FORAM Index and the SEDCON Index, were developed to indicate the suitability of a reef environment for continued reef accretion. The third index, the Photic Index, is an assessment …

History Of Chinese Red Cross: Part I, Caroline Reeves May 2008

History Of Chinese Red Cross: Part I, Caroline Reeves

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

Among the scenes of devastation—small bodies in shrouds; crumpled buildings and bridges; dazed survivors—another image flashes across the screen: something familiar, something reassuring to international viewers. Out of the chaos appears the symbol of the Red Cross, on the arm of a medic, on the side of an ambulance: a sign that there might be some hope—or at least some comfort—for these victims of China’s horrific earthquake.

As we watch the unreal footage of a natural disaster that has, so far, claimed almost 30,000 lives, we are brought back to our own comfort zone by the presence of that familiar …

90th Commencement Class Speaker's Address:The Connecticut College Footprint, Katherine Serafin May 2008

90th Commencement Class Speaker's Address:The Connecticut College Footprint, Katherine Serafin

Student Commencement Speeches

Let us now measure the steps we have taken: The Connecticut College footprint is our next step to collectively creating a new path for others to follow. Conn has taught us diversity, academic freedom and scholarship, social consciousness, change, and willingness to take action. It is now up to us to make use of these tools. If we can appreciate diversity, we can reduce hatred and war. If we believe that decreasing our carbon footprints will make a difference, we can fight the environmental crisis. If we continue to research, discuss and appreciate the arts, we can innovate and redesign …

Big Brown And The Troubled State Of Racing, Richard C. Crepeau May 2008

Big Brown And The Troubled State Of Racing, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Big Brown's victory at The Preakness yesterday has set the stage for a possible Triple Crown winner. At Belmont Park on June 7, and in the three weeks leading up to it, there will be much excitement and speculation in anticipation of Big Brown's big race. Ten horses have made it to this stage over the past three decades only to fall short at the Belmont Stakes. Nearly all of these ten, and now Big Brown, were felt to have an excellent chance to join the elite group of Triple Crown winners.

Teaching Resource You Shouldn’T Miss

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

Susan Glosser, professor of Chinese history at Lewis and Clark College and one of the first people to teach me about China in my undergrad years, has a delightful little publication that all manga afficionados and history teachers ought to know about. “Li Fengjin: How the New Marriage Law Helped Chinese Women Stand Up” is Susan’s very clever means of getting an authentic and appealing primary source into English-language classrooms. Her full translation is highly suitable for both secondary and tertiary classrooms, and it’s a steal for only $6.95.

Further Reading Recommendations On China Earthquake

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

1. David Bandurski has written an interesting comparison of official and commercial coverage of the earthquake in China at China Media Project.

2. Increasingly, Chinese people are calling for probes into why so many schools collapsed in the earthquake. Recent coverage includes a report by Richard Spencerfor the Telegraph and several from AFP: one here and another here.

3. Meanwhile, domestic Chinese media has begun to report that Western media is praising China’s relief efforts. Indeed, Monroe Price at Huffington Post (we have linked to several of his columns recently) writes about Western media’s “Olympic truce” with China.

4. For …

Finding And Losing One's Life: The Themes Of Gain And Loss In Matthew 10:32-42 And 16:21-28, Jeremiah Johnson May 2008

Finding And Losing One's Life: The Themes Of Gain And Loss In Matthew 10:32-42 And 16:21-28, Jeremiah Johnson

Master of Sacred Theology Seminar Papers

The purpose of this paper is to explore the themes of gain and loss in Matt 10.32--42 and16.21-28 and their respective contexts. Gain and loss, however, are closely interrelated to various other themes throughout these texts and as well as the rest of the book of Matthew, and my exploration will reflect this fact. It is the thesis of this paper that the themes of gain and loss (as well as their ancillaries) are not only repeated but developed through these two texts.

New Olympics Blog May 2008

New Olympics Blog

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

In yet another sign of the China-centered media hoopla certain to accompany this summer’s Olympic Games, The New York Times started a blog last week, “Rings: The 2008 Olympics.” The blog will draw on reporters from a variety of desks and bureaus, though much of the early coverage has been done by Jeff Z. Klein (who keeps the Times’ blogs on soccer and hockey) and sports columnist George Vecsey (who promises future China reading recommendations). So far, about half the blog’s posts have centered on athletic news–a good reminder after the torch relay, protests, and other Olympics-related coverage of recent …

Interview No. 1601, Esteban Chavez May 2008

Interview No. 1601, Esteban Chavez

Combined Interviews

Mr. Chavez recalls that in 1943 he tried to go as a bracero but was rejected because of his age; once he turned eighteen he was contracted along with his two older brothers; he recalls it taking two days to sign his contract, consequently they slept on the floor near the train; he recalls the health check by Mexican doctors, having their hands inspected, and being disinfected for lice; he recalls working in El Paso, making .40 cents a pound, and driving large machinery; he remembers fifty men sleeping in a barrack, using the river to bathe, and not having …
