Iris Von Roten As A Feminist: Observations, Interpretations, And Impact Of Frauen Im Laufgitter, Regina Wecker
Iris Von Roten As A Feminist: Observations, Interpretations, And Impact Of Frauen Im Laufgitter, Regina Wecker
Swiss American Historical Society Review
PART ONE
ASPECTS OF AN IDENTITY
When Iris von Roten published her book Frauen im Laufgitter. Offene Worte zur Stellung der Frau (Women in the Playpen. Plain Words About the Situation of Women) in 1958, it caused a scandal. Her analysis of women's present social status and their political and economic situation in Switzerland was repudiated, von Roten and her book were showered with scorn, hatred, and ridicule, and even made the subject of a carnival farce in Basel (Kochli 1992: 101-118). Frauen im Laufgitter and its author were called "cold" and soulless, though it was rumored that …

Swiss Women's Suffrage Debated: Two Examples, Leo Schelbert
Swiss American Historical Society Review
PART TWO: HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVES
To provide a taste of the thinking of Swiss people before Iris von Roten published her seminal work Frauen im Laufgitter in 1958 in Bern's Hallwag Verlag, some primary documents shall be presented. A first set reflects the parliamentary debate that was held on 12 December 1945 in the Swiss National Council, composed of the elected representatives of the cantons or member states of the Confederation. A second document is a statement of the theologian Arthur Rich (1910-1992) published in the Neue Zurcher Zeitung in November 1966. It responded to a circular which Zurich's anti-suffrage women …

Dialectic Of Past And Present In Eco's The Name Of The Rose And Al-Ghitani's Zayni Barakat, Martino Lovato
Archived Theses and Dissertations
This thesis compares an Italian and an Egyptian novel, Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose and Gamal al-Ghitani's Zayni Barakat, paying particular attention to the way European and Arabic historiographies influence their composition. Both set at the end of the Middle Ages, the two novels are taken as representatives of the way contemporary European and Arabic literature portray the past in relation to their present. Starting with a reconstruction of the two historiographic patterns based on Salvation and Progress, and their influencing the notion of literary Medievalism, the two novels are treated separately in order to contextualize them in …

Biennale Et Effervescence Artistique Au Sénégal : Conjonctions Et Passerelles, Hélène Tissières
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
The Dakar Biennial, Dak’Art, plays a key role and is the only event of this kind on the african continent. Held in a country where there is an abundant artistic production, it prolongs Senghor’s objectives (underlining the importance of the collective, intertwining art forms, investing mystical positions). Made of an “In” and “Off”, its structure dismantles divisions between popular/theoretical, accessible/obscure, autodidact/trained and promotes a dialog between people and approaches. Many Senegalese artists proceed in a similar fashion, assembling concepts (orality, signs, cultural references, categories), drawing from the world at large. Inscribing memory, they invite us to interrogate our future beyond …

Swiss American Historical Society Review
The centerpiece of this issue of the SAHS Review aims to celebrate the writing and life of the Swiss feminist, Iris von Roten. Relatively unknown in the United States, she stands tall with France's Simone de Beauvoir and America's Betty Friedan, feminists of the mid 20th Century post-war movement.

Institute Brief: Effective Career Development Strategies For Young Artists With Disabilities, Heike Boeltzig, Rooshey Hasnain, Jennifer Sullivan Sulewski
The Institute Brief Series, Institute for Community Inclusion
One potential arena of employment for young people with disabilities is the arts. This brief reports on effective strategies that 47 young artists with disabilities used to gain access to arts-related experiences in order to further their educational and career pathways. Across program years 2002–2005, these young artists, all aged 16 to 25, were finalists in the VSA arts/ Volkswagen of America, Inc. Program, an arts competition that was intended to showcase their talents and accomplishments. As part of the overall evaluation, we were able to identify career development strategies based on a review of finalists’ program applications. This brief …

Call To Action: A Pay Equity Resource Guide, Kacie Kelly
Publications from the Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy
Women continue to enter the workforce at record levels and laws on the state and federal levels prohibit gender discrimination in the workplace. Yet employment discrimination persists and women’s wages remain lower than men’s wages for comparable positions and occupations. With the 2005 publication of GETTING EVEN: Why Women Don’t Get Paid as Much as Men and What To Do About It by Economist and former Massachusetts Lieutenant Governor Evelyn Murphy, the issue of wage equity is finally receiving the widespread and sustained attention it deserves.
This resource guide provides an overview of the issues related to the wage gap …
